This is Children’s Island

There was so much to explore on Children's Island during the Fall Festival in October.  When all was said and done, we boarded the Hannah Glover for the return trip and the photographer in me was jumping up and down at seeing these clouds develop.  They provided for a very dramatic mood looking back toward the island and, even more so, as we returned to the mainland.  If you look closely at the top photo you can just make out the Jolly Roger flag and pirate boat that have been painted on the rocks.  They seem to be the unofficial [...]

Arts and Crafts at Children’s Island

After a donut and hot apple cider enjoyed inside the arts and crafts building, I looked back toward town and noted the open windows with their contrasting colors.  The red, white and blue paint on the weathered wood made for a great scene as did the few open windows on that cold Fall day.  I shot this at a very large aperture (f/2.8) to minimize the depth of field and focused on the nearest open door.  Between that and the contrasts of color and wood, I think the photo speaks to the character of the structures on Children's Island.

Welcome to Children’s Island

On October 22nd, the YMCA held a Fall festival on Children's Island.  I grabbed the kids and my camera and made my way to The Landing where the Hannah Glover ship ferried us over.  There were games to be played, hay rides to take and a great island to explore.  We made our way over to the Arts and Crafts cabin for a bit of hot cider, donuts and painting.  While looking around, I noted this sign that seemed to provide a perfect way to capture the spirit of the island. I'll have more from Children's Island this week and [...]

Last Blueberries of the Season at the Farmers Market

The last regularly scheduled Farmers Market of the season takes place tomorrow, November 19th and this seemed a great opportunity to bring back this shot taken several years ago.  The Farmers Market takes place every Saturday from June through October with two additional ones in the month of November.  Local farms bring in their fruit, vegetables, meats and baked goods to sell and several local businesses take part as well.  It's a wonderful way to start the day on any given Saturday. This shot was taken back in August of 2008 shortly after we moved to Marblehead.  I struggled to [...]

From the Rooftops – Lee Street and the Harbor

I started the rooftop project in late August and this was one of the first private homes that I was invited to shoot from.  The owners had responded to a flyer I addressed to them and were more than happy to share this view from their Lee street home with fellow Marbleheaders.  I have to admit being overwhelmed when I first stood on this roof and tried to take in the sites below.  The vantage point was perfect with neat houses that have stood in these spots for 200 years.  The harbor was filled with boats and you can make [...]

The Island in the Harbor

On Friday, October 21st, I drove past this island which sits on the border between Salem and Marblehead in the harbor and noted that it had seemed to reach peak color for the Fall.  I had been scouting this island for years hoping but failing to catch it at its peak last year.  Luckily, I had been carrying my camera gear in my trunk on a daily basis that week and, even more so, I was able to finish up work at 4pm and get back in time for sunset.  I tried a number of angles from different vantage points [...]

Old Town House Draped in Falls Best

I had my eye on this tree for weeks and kept waiting for it to finally reveal its full color.  It cooperated very well by doing so on the first Wednesday in November.  I tried to set up for this shot but had a car parked directly in front that obstructed my view.  Just as I was about to give up, the car took off and I managed to snap this image during a short break in traffic.  Enjoy another scene of Fall as the weather holds out against the coming Winter for at least a bit longer. Don't forget [...]

Waterside Painted in Red

Fall is finally showing its true color in Marblehead and I have been fortunate to catch a few areas at their peak.  On Saturday, I was driving down West Shore when I saw this brilliant tree in Waterside Cemetery.  I quickly turned around and grabbed my camera for a few shots.  The trouble was that many of the trees in the background had already lost their leaves so the lone tree looked a bit depressing rather than vibrant.  I chose to process this photo using the Orton effect (which I also used on the Welcome to Marblehead sign a while [...]

Fall colors explode in Marblehead

On Tuesday, November 8th I found myself with a bit of time at 3pm with which to explore downtown.  I drove down Pleasant street with a destination in mind when I saw this tree lit up by a late Fall sun.  I quickly parked and set up to capture this beautiful tree at peak color perfectly framing the beautiful blue door of this house.  If you look carefully, you can just make out the tag explaining that this house was built by Samuel Martin, Housewright in 1828.  I found a wealth of color as I raced against the setting sun [...]

Rooftop Thursday – The Terraces on Lookout Court

As I began on this new project to photograph Marblehead from above, I was fortunate to run across a photo taken at The Terraces Bed and Breakfast run by Sylvia and John Philbrook from their home on Lookout Court.  We made plans to meet there when the room was free and I was thrilled to see this view as I entered.  I needed to time this right as traffic was surprisingly busy below on Lee Street with a moving truck stuck there for a while.  This was taken near the end of September so the harbor was thankfully still filled [...]
