Green Light in the Blue Hour

A few people thought yesterday's image of foliage at Seaside was a bit too soon so here is a shot from an early September evening captured one year ago - September 2, 2019.  I remember heading out on this night hoping that the clouds over the Neck might serve to reflect the light of sunset but the clouds never broke and I was left with a fairly monotone scene. I waited a bit past sunset for the blue hour and then spotted the reflection of Marblehead light's green beacon reflecting in the still water of the harbor. That and the [...]

Autumn in Marblehead

It's truly an odd year when the leaves at Seaside Park have turned before the kids are back in school... Today marks the official first day of school and both of my kids are ready with laptops in hand for the remote start that will guide us into the hybrid model to carry kids through the school year. Meanwhile, I had errands in town this weekend and spotted the tree at Gatchell already turned and with more than half of its canopy gone while this one at Seaside Park was also a dull orange with lots of dropped leaves. I'm [...]

Under the Friday Night Lights

And another throwback to simpler times and recalling the joy of a Marblehead High School football game under the Friday night lights.  This shot was captured on September 7, 2018 when my daughter's then 5th grade Marblehead cheer team attended the game in full uniform.  I captured a few shots of the game from the fence but also took this shot of the cheerleaders on the sidelines. Again, at the time, the image was relegated to the 'to be published' folder but now brings back memories of fun evenings under the lights. Football may end up more interesting with its [...]

Simpler Days

As we pass six months of social distancing and mask wearing, I found myself drawn to my admittedly few environmental portraits that had yet to be shared. This shot of Glover's Regiment crossing Marblehead harbor as a tribute to simpler days was an instant selection. The shot was captured on December 1, 2018 and features the whole of the Regiment well within our now 6 foot distance. At the time I thought nothing of this shot and put it in the 'to be published' archive having favored some others from the outing. Now it carries so much more weight and [...]

Little Rainbow

It's a bit ironic that I had gone out on July 30th in the hopes of capturing a rainbow over Little Harbor but ended up wiht such a nice sunset that this shot of that little rainbow ended up as the fifth (and last) of the images shared from this outing. I had arrived to the Little Harbor Lobster Company lot at a little before 7:30pm and stayed in the car watching for signs of a rainbow after a summer rain passed through. I only noticed the one you see here by chance and managed to get this one shot [...]

Bathing in Light

Back from a week's staycation with this shot from that mid-August outing which featured the most varied light conditions I've seen in some time. From the same evening in which I captured the ominous sky over the causeway and Tinkers as well as the rainbow at Castle Rock and the vibrant sunset from the Pleon, I also found this scene of Marblehead Neck and Chandler Hovey Park bathing in light from the setting sun.  This was a surprisingly tough shot to capture and process with the sunlight on the Neck so bright and yellow that it seemed fake even while [...]

The Full Corn Moon

The full corn moon rose over Chandler Hovey Park tonight and I was one of a half dozen photographers among many more onlookers admiring the view of the moon rising over a collection of boats in the mouth of the harbor. When I arrived at Front Street I had been hoping for a different shot than what I came away with. The lights had been hung on the lighthouse early on in the COVID era and I envisioned a shot of the moon rising with the lighthouse resplendent in lights and a collection of boats filling the waters. As sunset [...]

Please Stay Off Beach

I couldn't help but combine three shots from this spot along Ocean Avenue on the Neck to create a more impressive view of the lightning strikes over Boston from a very active storm that came through on August 23rd. This was the same storm that I captured in that purplish orange sunset with a single bolt. Having gotten that shot, I headed for home but then decided to turn onto Ocean Avenue as lightning kept striking to the south. I used my widest lens and shot several frames until I managed to capture this collection of bolts over the span [...]

Basking in the Light

As it turns out, 2020 was a great year for renovations in Marblehead including those to the facade and bones of Abbot Hall. With scaffolding surrounding the building, I have not found opportunity to shoot the building except at angles low enough that I could hide the surrounding netting. Finally in August, Abbot Hall shed its scaffolding and I found the building basking in the light of a late August day when I stopped along Ocean Avenue and made my way on foot to the short stretch of beach at the end of the causeway. From this vantage point, I [...]

Passing Storm

Hope you aren't tired of images from Wednesday August 19 yet but, as the difference from yesterday's afterglow to today's dramatic sky illustrate, there was such a wide spectrum of light conditions that every location offered completely different clouds and lighting to play with. This shot of the passing storm crossing over the causeway and the Neck was captured earlier in the evening at my first stop - Riverhead Beach. When I am dealing with uncertain conditions, I tend to head to this spot to quickly check the sky and light from every direction. As it turned out, I had [...]
