Summer Nights in Marblehead

Sometimes as I go through my 'to be posted' archive, I come across an image and wonder why it didn't make the cut initially. In this case, I looked back and found that I had been playing with reflections of the lighthouse in a puddle of water from a recent rain and then later was treated to an even nicer sunset sky. Lost Carnival

The rain on Friday should have been my first clue but somehow the weekend came and went and it was only near the end of two picture perfect days that I remembered - this should have been the weekend of the carnival. I really love the carnival and have made it a point to shoot it each year. I remember being particularly excited for this year's event as I was told that Cushing Amusement had purchased a new taller ferris wheel that lit up and would have made a great centerpiece of any composition. Racing for the Jackson Cup

Only a few hours after capturing yesterday's image of opening day at Gatchell Park, I headed across the causeway to shoot the boats racing for the Jackson Cup. This annual tradition takes place on the last weekend in April but will be missed this year as the yacht clubs remain closed with COVID-19 restrictions in place. There's nothing like watching the brightly colored sails criss-crossing in front of Abbot Hall, the BYC and other familiar spots across the water.

Opening Day

This aerial image of opening day for baseball in Marblehead was captured almost exactly two years ago - April 28, 2018. While baseball season has been postponed and crowds of kids and parents can't line the outfield at Gatchell Park quite yet, these traditions will return at some point in the future.

Cloudy with a Chance of Tinkers

This may well be the single worst title I have every come up with for a post in the nearly 10 years of Wednesdays in Marblehead. Rainbow after the Storm

On May 23, 2018, I drove to Crocker Park as a storm passed over town and managed to capture this pink rainbow over a calm Marblehead harbor. Normally, I would look forward to the prospect of rain as it might mean the possibility of catching a rainbow. I'm not sure that any of the rain showers that we've had in 2020 has produced a rainbow yet.

The Marker

In the summer of 2019, my family was invited out for a boat tour around the harbor. At a little past 6pm, we passed the 2MH marker at the mouth of the harbor and I couldn't help but capture this quick shot of it with a hint of red reflecting in the blue ocean water.

Night of the Aurora

In 2015, strong solar storms allowed Marbleheaders to view the aurora borealis on two occasions - March and June. This is my last image from the earlier outing on March 17, 2015 that I had yet to share. With the sun having since diminished the frequency and severity of storms, I'm not sure that we'll have a chance to view these purple and green colors again for a while. *Note - the colors were not visible to the naked eye but required a long (25 second) exposure by the camera sensor

Above an Empty Harbor

I bought my drone (the Phantom 4 Pro) in November 2016 and, shortly after, became a certified pilot. On April 12, 2017, I decided to explore Marblehead Harbor from the air and flew above an empty harbor to this spot overlooking the Neck. With the clouds overhead reflecting in the still waters of the harbor and the empty moorings dotting the water, I discovered a new appreciation for this 'between season'.
