Moon and Star over The Landing

On December 12, 2019, the cold moon set over State Street and I was able to capture this view from across the harbor on Harvard Street. I've shared two other images from this morning's outing - one that captured a more panoramic shot to include Grace Community Church and another just to the right that had Old North Church bathed in the light of sunrise. This image sat in the 'to be posted' archive until today. At my lens' full zoom of 400mm, the setting moon and star over The Landing restaurant appear larger than life. I'm normally not a [...]

By Request – Weathering the Storm

I received another request the other day for a 'storm' shot and thought this would be a good one to end the week with. Just as the Barnacle has borne the brunt of countless storms, so will the town of Marblehead weather this storm of health, social and economic impacts while sheltering in place and trying to keep the community safe. I read today that Marblehead Board of Health has joined other towns in enacting a mask law beginning today that, according to the Reporter: "requires residents to wear a face mask if they are entering any business including grocery [...]

By Request – The Horribles Parade in Marblehead

I couldn't decide what photos to share for the rest of this week so I asked on my Facebook page. I received several responses - some of which I had already shared such as the old Glover school. But one request came in for the July 4th parade and, as it happened, I had just been looking at this image taken on July 4, 2017. With the warmth evident in the image and the sheer joy of a crowded parade during this time of quarantine, I quickly decided to go with this shot. I had actually put together a page [...]

I’m Looking Forward To…

Last night as I looked through my 'to be posted' archive, I kept thinking to myself 'what am I most looking forward to?'. When I got to this image captured on October 5, 2018, I knew I had my answer. I'm looking forward to a full harbor, warm summer nights and Abbot bathed in golden light. What are you looking forward to?

Raging Storm

With warnings of wind gusts of up to 70 miles per hour, today's predicted storm put me in mind of this outing on March 3, 2018 when a raging storm hurled waves across the causeway. In this shot, you can judge the height of the splash over as it rises higher than the lamp posts on the causeway and you can make out one of the structures on Tinkers Island in the distance. Even the causeway had white caps on this wind swept day.

Counting Down the Days

As of today, the causeway is officially closed to pedestrians. With a fairly narrow sidewalk serving two way pedestrian traffic and the concerns for spreading coronavirus, the causeway will be closed until further notice. While I understand the concerns of those who will miss walking this great stretch of road that divides the Atlantic Ocean and our own Harbor, I completely support the decision to try to stem the tide of infection that is so easily transmitted. There has been at least one study of droplets and the effect of the slipstream formed from brisk walking, running or biking that [...]

Spring is in the Air

Five years after moving to Marblehead in 2008, I stumbled upon the three cherry blossom trees at the Harris Street Cemetery. I've gone back each year to capture them in full bloom and, despite the small space, am thrilled to keep finding new compositions as the blooms and light change slightly each spring. This was the earliest I had ever captured the cherry blossoms in full bloom (in 2013 they didn't reach peak until April 21st!).   However, with this year's mild winter and spring, it wasn't a surprise to find the trees had reached peak on April 6, 2020. This [...]

By the Light of the Moon

A few days ago, I saw that a group of volunteers climbed Marblehead Light to adorn it with holiday lights a bit earlier than the usual Fourth of July weekend. The move was meant to offer a bit of light to those sheltering in place as we all wait for the coronavirus pandemic to pass. With the lighthouse normally lit only twice a year, I've had few opportunities to capture a moonrise against the light of the moon and thus made a point of heading down to Front Street this evening to capture the view. Unfortunately, clouds blocked the moonrise [...]

Summer Sunset from Village Street

I went out twice yesterday to capture photos with the second outing being a hope of a decent sunset that never did materialize. I came home and started scrolling through my archives trying to remember what a vivid sunset actually looked like after endless days of grey and found this gem from July 19, 2019. I still remember driving home with my son as the sky began to light up and then making an impromptu turn onto Village Street where I quite literally pulled over for this.  I came away with more compositions than I could share that night and [...]
