Pond Skating on New Years Day

I have had this image of pond skating at Redd's in mind for years and was so thrilled to have finally captured it. In 2010, Vincent Laforet captured an aerial image of skaters at Rockefeller center from a helicopter and what struck me about the shot was the shadows telling the story of what each skater was doing. I considered hiring my own helicopter or plane for a similar image over Redds Pond but that held too many complications and variables.  A few years ago, drones came on the market but the early ones had cameras better suited for video [...]

New Years Supermoon

I have been looking forward to the New Years Supermoon for two weeks now and kept hoping the predictions for clear skies would hold.  I had everything I needed to capture the first moonrise of 2018 - new camera and a longer lens - that could offer me reach I never had before and the dynamic range to balance the brightness of the moon against Marblehead Light. As it happened, the perfect vantage point for the moonrise fell right in the backyard of my Wednesdays in Marblehead book designer. I sent her an email a few days back to see [...]

2017 in Pictures – Annual Marblehead New Years Day Slideshow

175 images of Marblehead shared in 365 days This year I shared 175 images of which 130 were taken in 2017; the rest came from my to be posted archive.  I actually captured 235 images this past year but, as with years past, I end up with more shots than I can reasonably share and therefore have a growing archive of images waiting to be posted. What started off as a personal website to explore my new hometown of Marblehead, Massachusetts has taken off in ways I never imagined.  When I first created Wednesdays in Marblehead in 2010 and was trying [...]

Goodnight 2017 – Frozen New Years Eve Sunset

This was truly a frozen New Years Eve sunset as I braved an insanely cold wind coming off the frozen harbor to capture my last sunset of 2017.  I decided to head out in part to capture the chunks of ice that had formed along this part of the harbor and hoped the clouds would break for a nice sunset to help say 'Goodnight 2017'. I started off shooting around 3:40pm and only lasted 10 minutes before the cold forced me to retreat into the car.  Despite dressing warmly in multiple layers, the 20 mph winds (and -15F wind chills) [...]

Beacon in the Smoke

With temperatures stuck below freezing and another sunrise at single digits, I couldn't pass up the chance to try out my new camera and lens.  I had just received the Sony 100-400mm lens in the mail the night before and had been hoping for continued cold to shoot more scenes of sea smoke in Marblehead Harbor. When I woke and looked out at the cloud cover, I knew the conditions were right for an amazing dawn but also had to get ready for work.  I watched the light explode this morning while getting ready but was able to finish in [...]

Top 10 of 2017 – #1 Christmas at Sea

How can a tree on a small boat be my favorite image of 2017 after passing up sunrises, sunsets, the harbor illumination and two shots of lightning? I'm not sure but there is something perfectly Marblehead in the simplicity of this small boat and decorated tree with a starfish on top floating in Little Harbor on the first snowfall of the season. The title Christmas at Sea is one that I thought summed up those elements quite well. I captured this image on December 9th at 11:33am so the feeling of walking across the slippery rocks in front of the [...]

Harbormaster in the Smoke

One more new photo before the end of the year... I couldn't help but head out this morning to capture the harbor in arctic conditions.  As I drove toward State Street, I watched the thermometer on my dashboard until it settled at 1F (not counting any wind chill).  I parked at the Landing and headed out to find sea smoke throughout the harbor.  It wasn't at the incredible levels I had last seen in February 2016 but any sea smoke is worth the drive and braving the elements. I shot toward the lighthouse before spotting the sun rising directly over [...]

Top 10 of 2017 – #2 Lightning Storm over Marblehead Harbor

I've captured images of lightning over Marblehead Harbor only twice previously (June 2012 and August 2015).  I had been pleased with those efforts until the night of June 27th.  I had gone out after one storm passed over town and set up along Corinthian Lane to capture the next storm headed our way. While I waited, I was treated to an incredible sunset and then this - my second favorite image of 2017. My original thoughts on this image: What an incredible night and an epic lightning storm over Marblehead Harbor.  I left the house a little after 7pm hoping [...]

Top 10 of 2017 – #3 Lighting up the Eastern Yacht Club

While the annual Marblehead Fireworks show is a perfect way to celebrate the Fourth of July, the Harbor Illumination that precedes it is a unique Marblehead tradition that has become my favorite part of the night.  Knowing that I would be shooting from the Pleon Yacht Club this year, I told note of the location of the flares set up by the boy scouts and had this composition in mind when the flares were lit.  The resulting scene with red flares and a blue sky with perfect reflections in the water of the harbor made for my third favorite image [...]

Top 10 of 2017 – #4 First Snow of the Season

Another December image and another aerial makes it to the top 5 of the year.  We had an absolutely perfect first snow of the season on December 9th and I went out on the 10th in the morning to capture the results.  That's when I shot the partially frozen image of Redd's that made it to #7 and this aerial image of Abbot Hall that ended up as my fourth favorite image of 2017. My original thoughts on this image: There’s something magical about the first snow of the season.  After shooting around town as the snow fell yesterday, I [...]
