Full Worm Moon over Tinkers Island

That was a surprisingly nice moonrise. I had little hope for seeing let alone capturing the full worm moon tonight given the cloud cover and timing of the moonrise (5:17pm). I left my Danvers office at 5:00pm and drove straight to Surf Street where I had mapped out the moon rise to take place over Tinkers Island. As luck would have it, I hit every green light and arrived at my location at 5:29pm just as the full moon was rising above the cloud cover. I had enough time to setup my camera with its longest lens on the tripod [...]

Time to Play

I took most of January and February 'off' from the daily posts to try to regroup and start the new year with a new perspective to explore the town of Marblehead. With that hiatus finished, I thought I would share some favorite images taken during that time. Today's shot comes from a mid-January outing to Devereux Beach. I had gone out on this Saturday at 4pm to follow some clouds in the hopes that they would make for a nice sunset and ended up exploring new angles at Devereux afforded by the super zoom I had recently purchased.  With that [...]

Three Volleys on Old Burial Hill

Last night, Glover's Regiment met in front of Old Town House before their annual memorial march to Old Burial Hill to commemorate the life of John Glover. I hadn't previously had the chance to join the Regiment on this march and was thrilled to take part this year under cool (but not miserable) conditions. There were two other photographers there shooting for the Reporter and Daily Item and the three of us tried to stay out of each other's shots as we walked ahead of the Regiment along Washington Street towards Glover's burial place. When we reached Old Burial Hill, [...]

5 O’Clock Sunset

I went out tonight to test out a lens and managed to reach Chandler Hovey Park as the sunset light hit its peak.  I shot this as the clock on Abbot Hall tower struck five and felt like celebrating a bit that we have finally hit the 5 O'Clock Sunset part of winter where spring seems close at hand. Enjoy the weekend!

Super Blue Blood Moon setting over Marblehead

I couldn't pass up shooting a 'super blue blood moon' especially when conditions were perfect with forecast for clear skies this morning. The name comes from a unique combination of the moon's proximity to Earth (super), the second full moon in a month (blue) and a partial lunar eclipse (blood). I had scouted out locations last night based on the projected moon set and settled on an area between the Eastern Yacht Club and Corinthian Lane.  As I crossed the causeway onto the Neck, I spotted the bright moon low in the evening sky and followed it as I drove [...]

Social Media Hiatus

I have decided to take a bit of a break from all social media and focus on looking for new images and compositions in a more slowed and deliberate fashion.  If you need to reach me, email works best - [email protected].  I will continue to fill print orders from the website. In the meantime, I have a plugin that can share old posts at random so don't be surprised to see images from as far back as 2008 or as recently as last week showing up on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Google Plus... I won't be commenting on those posts apart [...]

Epiphany Bonfire in the Falling Snow

Tonight's epiphany bonfire in the falling snow couldn't have been more magical and I almost gave up on shooting it... I made it home from work a little after 5 and had enough time to change and drop off my son at basketball practice before heading to Riverhead beach and the annual (though belated) epiphany bonfire.  I arrived as the first flames rose from the pile of Christmas trees and turned into the Devereux parking lot only to find far more parked cars and far less room than I expected.  I turned into what appeared to be the last open [...]

Epiphany Tree Burning in Marblehead

We moved to Marblehead in 2008 and did not get to experience the Epiphany tree burning until this annual tradition returned a few years ago.  The image of hundreds of Christmas trees being set aflame on January 6th with hundreds of people gathered around was awe inspiring and I've tried to capture it from various angles over the years. This image comes from the 2017 Epiphany tree burning which I chose to view and capture from Redsteps on the corner of Cliff and Chestnut streets. The 2018 tree burning has been postponed due to arctic cold and thus will take [...]

Frozen Harbor at Sunset

The night before a blizzard quite literally exploded over Marblehead, I went out hoping to capture the sight of a nearly frozen harbor.  While Salem harbor had frozen over several days ago, Marblehead's own harbor seemed more stubborn in succumbing to the arctic blast. Earlier on this Wednesday, I had made it out to Riverhead Beach and flew my drone over the newly frozen parts of inner harbor and knew that at least part of our harbor had finally frozen. As sunset approached, I headed across the causeway trying to think of a new vantage point having shot from just [...]

Pancake Ice at Stramski Beach

On Tuesday night I decided to head out to Stramski Beach before sunset hoping to capture images of a frozen Salem harbor only to find picture perfect pancake ice all around me. I spent an hour exploring compositions including the Stramski pier and close ups of the ice.  As the sun set and the temperature dipped to single digits, the sky lit up with a beautiful and incredibly long sunset. I shot frame after frame but was immediately drawn to this one with the pier and bare trees framing the scene and the pancake ice reflecting the colors of sunset. [...]
