A New Day Dawns in Marblehead

I hadn't been out to shoot the dawn in a month and so, when I woke at 6am on Saturday morning, I decided to head out the door and see if luck might follow me to Crocker Park.  I had quickly checked the location of the rising sun and decided that Crocker offered the potential for some nice side light to illuminate the boats still moored in the harbor.  I lucked out with a parking spot along Front Street and walked up to the park. I arrived to find still waters and some nice orange light beginning to show to [...]

Moored by Moonlight under the Harvest Moon

Long after the Harvest Moon rose, I stayed along Front Street and watched the moonlight grow brighter and move directly over Marblehead Light.  The boats moored in the harbor were lined up perfectly from this spot and seemed to be bathed in golden moonlight emanating from the lighthouse itself as I chose to compose this image without the moon - focusing instead on its light reflected on the water. As a bonus, the green beacon shone from atop the lighthouse and a gentle breeze lifted the flag which also seemed to grab a bit of moonlight to shine in the [...]

Expecting the Harvest Moon at Lovis Cove

I didn't have high hopes for tonight's Harvest Moon and am very glad that my expectations were proven very, very wrong.  I had scouted out the projected rise of the full moon and decided to shoot from Lovis Cove but had found little motivation as 5:30pm rolled around and I lay on our newly delivered (and far too comfortable couch).  With an effort of will, I gathered my bag, tripod and was out the door. I showed up 15 minutes early and set up near the Barnacle where I was surprised (and flattered) to meet three fans/followers in a span [...]

Granite and Foliage at Waterside

As the calendar turns to October, I've started to look for signs of foliage around town.  The maple at Gatchell has long since turned and started to lose its leaves while the one at Seaside Park has a dull burnt look so far this year.  I found this brilliant display of foliage from Waterside Cemetery taking in mid-October 2012 and thought I would share it today. Have you found any good displays of foliage around town yet? Please let me know where in a comment below.  Thanks!

Reflections in the Sand at Devereux Beach

On an early September evening in 2014, I headed out to Devereux Beach to chase after some cumulous clouds that had formed shortly before sunset.  I arrived to find low tide and wet sand creating the perfect environment for these clouds to form reflections in the sand. I shot this from low to the ground to try to maximize the foreground sand and reflections while keeping the bodies of both clouds visible above Flying Point and Marblehead Neck.

Last Call in Little Harbor

As I wait for leaves to change around town, I thought I would look back in the 'to be posted' folder to see if I had any nice foliage shots to share.  I happened upon this image of boats tied up in Little Harbor on September 28, 2014.  With the leaves starting to change color on Brown's Island and the light turning golden, a few boats seemed to have broken from their tie ups to call it a night.  Given the festivities that accompany these tie ups, I thought it only appropriate to title this one 'Last Call in Little [...]

Catching some Rays at the BYC

I've had a backlog of images waiting to be processed and finally found some time to go through them this week.  Yesterday, I happened upon this one that I had nearly forgotten about from early August.  I had gone out that day intending to fly the drone in a few new spots around town.  I began shooting over Barnegat and Little Harbor before ending up at Crocker Park. As the sun began to set, I moved over the water to explore the views and found that when I hovered over the BYC, I could capture the sun descending directly behind [...]

Floating on Sunset at Ladys Cove in Marblehead

Today's image comes from the Summer of 2013 and a project to capture the sunset cannons firing at each yacht club around Marblehead Harbor.  On this particular June evening, I had ventured out to the Dolphine Yacht Club and captured a small rainbow in the sunset sky.  As I finished shooting the rainbow and cannon firing, I turned my head towards Ladys Cove and spotted this small dock at low tide. At the angle of the dock, it appeared to be floating on sunset as boats on their moorings filled the waters as far as the causeway. I asked on [...]
