Spotting Foliage on the Neck

I mentioned yesterday that I had gone out for a second time on Sunday in the hopes of spotting foliage from above and flew my drone from Riverhead Beach.  I spotted a tree sporting bright orange leaves almost immediately and headed across to Marblehead Neck for a closer look. I explored the tree you can see near the water between piers from various angles and heights.  This one was taken at nearly 400 feet above the ground and offered a view of the full depth of the Neck with some foliage apparent near the bird sanctuary.  I made sure to [...]

October Sunrise at Ram Island

What an incredible October sunrise we had this morning!  I woke before 7 to dark skies but looked out and thought conditions might develop for a solid dawn - especially with the coming storm.  I kept thinking that and looking out the window as the sky erupted in color.  With that, I was out the door and off to Preston Beach. I knew I had little hope for catching the peak of dawn color but hoped some would hold out and that the sunrise might offer a nice opportunity as well.  I arrived at Preston as the sky shifted to [...]

A River Runs Through It

This is just about the exact opposite of yesterday's image of Abbot Hall with brilliant red foliage.  I had gone out for a second time at 5:00pm hoping the early evening light would help with what little foliage was to be found.  I flew my Phantom 4 Pro out from Riverhead Beach to mid-harbor and then came back and over the causeway headed for Goldthwait Reservation.  I wondered what a direct aerial image of the marsh might look like and was not disappointed with the views. I flew over the marsh for a while exploring the patterns below.  From above, [...]

Flash of Color at Abbot Hall

On Sunday, I finally found some foliage around town and will share five favorite images from two outings this week.  Today's image of a flash of color at Abbot hall quite literally snuck up on me as I was driving along Washington Street out of historic downtown on my way home and spotted red foliage on this tree backlit by the 11:00am sun.  I quickly turned and pulled over to try to capture this beautiful scene. I decided to use my circular polarizer on my widest lens and started off shooting from directly under the tree but found the composition [...]

Fall in the Air over Seaside Park

On Sunday, I watched the sky fill with clouds in the morning but then show signs of breaking up in the afternoon.  I had to pick up my son on the Neck and so I threw the drone in the car and stopped at Seaside Park after picking him up and forcing him to join me. I was surprised to find another drone at the park - this one was a racing model flown by a boy with first person view goggles on.  I was a bit jealous as I set my much larger drone down and flew it in [...]

Sunset Flight over Marblehead

What do you do when the sky explodes in color all around but you're at home without enough time to drive to a good spot? Fly 400 feet straight up and capture this incredible view over the Atlantic and Boston skyline! I arrived home a little after 5:30 this evening and caught a quick glance at the sky wondering if the clouds might break in time for sunset.  I didn't think much more of it as I sat in my office until I saw a bit of light hit the tall tree across the street and checked the webcams around [...]

Friday Night Lights – Marblehead High School Football

With conditions for the Marblehead High School football game, I grabbed my drone and headed out to capture an aerial image of Friday Night lights.  This was one of many aerial images I had hoped to capture when I purchased the Phantom 4 Pro but had to wait for perfect conditions (as well as an FAA waiver) to allow me to realize it. The Marblehead Magicians were facing off against Gloucester in a home game on a warm fall evening and would go on to win this game and continue their undefeated season.  I showed up five minutes before kickoff [...]

Hint of Fall at Crocker Park

The last image from Saturday's dawn visit to Crocker Park illustrates this year's lackluster foliage season (thus far).  I had just walked up from my spot where I captured three great images of dawn when I turned to look at this familiar tree.  I had found the early fall season to be disappointing as far as foliage goes - likely due to the dry and too-warm conditions (though I'm not complaining about either of those). As I mentioned yesterday, the sun had disappeared behind thickening clouds and I was able to grab just a bit of sunrise color behind the [...]

Sunrise Glow over Marblehead Neck

A few minutes after yesterday's image of a perfect dawn in Marblehead, the first hint of sunrise glow began to form over Marblehead neck.  I made a slight adjustment to the composition and settings and captured the light as it built to its maximum. As it turns out, the sun never actually showed after this moment.  The clouds thickened and this light was quickly extinguished with the light of the sun hidden behind the building cloud cover.  The twenty minute span between the first light of dawn and this peak sunrise glow made the trip to Crocker Park incredibly productive [...]

Marblehead Harbor Dawn

Between yesterday's capture and this one, twenty minutes elapsed.  During that time, I had decided to set up Facebook Live on my iPhone so others could enjoy what I hoped would be a beautiful sunrise.  As the sun approached the horizon, the sky absolutely exploded in color.  I shot frame after frame and kept adjusting the composition until this moment when the light peaked. An incredible mix of pinks and purples lit up the sky on this Marblehead Harbor dawn.  I loved how the boats in the harbor all seemed to be pointing toward Marblehead Light with its green beacon [...]
