Chandler Hovey Park and Children’s Island

An image from mid-February captured as I headed out in search of the full moon and ended up with a really nice winter sunset as a bonus.  I had been shooting wide angle shots encompassing the nearly empty harbor with the few working boats moored in its protective waters when I saw this composition.  I zoomed in so that Chandler Hovey Park and Marblehead Light were visible under the soft pink hues of sunset while including the whole of Children's Island just beyond. The setting sun added a brilliant warm glow to the scene and the snow served to break [...]

Dawn from Castle Rock

By |2016-11-06T12:04:39-05:00March 10th, 2014|Categories: Marblehead Neck|Tags: , , |

The past few weeks have been filled with a dizzying array of emotions - from joy to stress, exhaustion to exhilaration, and finally gratitude.  The book is now firmly on the road to being made and it's time to get back to our regularly scheduled programming... I struggled with the choice of an image for today.  As beautiful as snow can be, I am just so tired of this long, cold winter.  I thought about bringing out a spring or summer image but that felt almost cruel - holding out hope of warmth as the weather reports predict more cold [...]

We are in the final 48 hours of the Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for printing a beautiful hard cover coffee table book of my images of Marblehead.  The original funding goal has been met.  We are now less than $500 (as of this writing) from the second goal to produce a larger book (11x11 144 pages instead of the original 10x10 120 pages). Pledge your support today: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/marblehead/wednesdays-in-marblehead-a-book-of-landscape-photo Below is a sneak peak of one of the sections in near-final format: Traditions

Snow Bank at Sunrise from Castle Rock

By |2016-11-06T12:04:39-05:00February 26th, 2014|Categories: Sunrise|Tags: , , |

On Wednesday, February 19, I decided to wake up early and capture the sunrise from Castle Rock.  I had discovered the joy of photographing the start of a new day on my birthday the previous year and felt like repeating the now tradition. As we had freshly fallen snow from the night before, I decided to drive to Castle Rock where I hoped to capture the reflections of the sun as it rose off the snow banks.  When I arrived, I found tracks along the upper section but untrodden snow lay below. I set up for this shot at dawn [...]

Warm Sunrise over Marblehead Harbor

With yet another polar vortex threatening to bring temperatures down to below zero, I thought it fitting to bring this warm sunrise over Marblehead harbor out from the archives. This image was taken on August 3, 2013 at 5:41am from Crocker Park. Enjoy a few minutes of warmth in front of your screen before heading out this morning to brave the cold weather.

Sand Trap in the Snow – Tedesco Country Club

By |2014-02-26T09:05:43-05:00February 20th, 2014|Categories: Snow|Tags: , , |

This has been a long Winter with all too frequent snow storms and plenty of sub-freezing temperatures to go along with them. That being said, there is something incredibly beautiful about a coating of freshly fallen snow. On Saturday, February 15, immediately after dropping off my son at the Tedesco parking lot for the YMCA snowboarding clinic, I headed across the street to capture the view you see before you. Snow had fallen the night before and a nice sunrise was developing as I found this composition near Tedesco Street. I was surprised to see that the sand trap had [...]

The Perfect Birthday Present for a Certain Photographer in your Life

By |2016-11-06T12:04:41-05:00February 19th, 2014|Categories: Uncategorized|

So as luck would have it, the idea for the Wednesdays in Marblehead Coffee Table book came together in January and all of the pieces fell into place for me to start the Kickstarter campaign to help fund it in early February.  With the 30-day funding window, that meant my birthday would fall in the middle of the funding cycle.  I had hoped to reach the minimum pledge level by my birthday and was awestruck when I did so back on February 13! Having reached the minimum level at which I could get a good size book published (10x10 120 [...]

Snow Moon rises over snow covered Marblehead Neck

By |2014-02-26T09:05:09-05:00February 19th, 2014|Categories: moon|Tags: , , |

I mentioned on Monday's post that I had gone out after work Friday (Valentine's Day) in hopes of capturing the February snow moon. I arrived at Crocker Park in time to capture a great pink sunset over Marblehead harbor and a few other scenes of snow that I will share in the days to come. Well after the sun had set and the moon had risen, I had yet to find it in the night sky. I checked and rechecked my apps meant to help track the moon's path but it was nowhere to be seen. I got back in [...]

The Calm Before the Storm – Greystone Beach

By |2016-11-06T12:04:41-05:00February 18th, 2014|Categories: Snow|Tags: , , , |

On Saturday, February 15, I woke early to take my son to the YMCA snowboarding lesson and then drove in search of images of the early morning sun reflecting off snow. We already had a good amount of snow on the ground and were due for yet another blizzard that evening. I figured the unsettled air might help bring out a nice sunrise. I began with images of Tedesco's trees and greens covered in snow and then drove off to find good light. As I watched the sky brighten, I decided to head to Greystone beach in the hopes of [...]
