Foggy Morning in Marblehead Day 2 – First Colors at Crocker Park

By |2016-11-06T12:05:51-05:00September 17th, 2013|Categories: Park|Tags: , , |

Continuing on from yesterday's post, here is another image taken on the (soon to be) foggy morning of a hot September 11.  I had photographed Marblehead harbor filled with boats and the lighthouse for a while and kept looking in the other direction to see how the light was faring over there.  When the light picked up, it seemed to set off the small clump of foliage in the rocky cliff of Crocker Park that had started to change color.  I set up on the float for this composition including the nearby rowboat on a private float and the Crocker [...]

Foggy Morning in Marblehead Day 1 – Marblehead Harbor at Dawn

On the night of Tuesday, September 10th we were on the cusp of a 90 degree day and so I turned to my weather apps to try to predict the next morning's sunrise conditions.  I was disheartened to see clear skies in the forecast and turned to twitter to see if Matt Noyes might help me out.  As a testament to his availability and knowledge, I received the following information from him that night: "Well...the app likely says clear b/c it's tied to computers which also mostly say clear after 3am clearing trend commences. But..Presence of cloud deck now, including [...]

I'm going to diverge a bit from the usual image posts today to share some frustrations with you.  For those who only see my posts on Twitter or Facebook or those who haven't visited my updated website, you may not be aware that all images are made available for purchase as prints.  I offer standard matted and/or framed works as well as prints on canvas or metal.  Each print is made by a professional lab and carries a 100% satisfaction guarantee.   Well, make that 110%... Storm Chasing at Chandler Hovey Park

People's Choice Award - Marblehead Festival of Arts 2014 I went out this afternoon to chase after some big cumulus clouds that had formed over Marblehead harbor.  While I managed to get a few shots of those with a harbor still filled with boats, I began to feel a bit dismayed as grey skies seemed to swallow up those cumulus clouds.  I decided to head towards Chandler Hovey Park to see if I could get a better angle on the approaching cloud formation and saw this. This image is a 6-shot panorama at 17mm which should give you some sense [...]

Huey and Louie Visit the Eastern Yacht Club

I mentioned on Tuesday's post that we had a lot of rain in early September and otherwise boring gray skies.  The day after I ventured out to shoot at Cove Lane (and it started to rain minutes after that shot was taken by the way), I discovered that there was dense fog to be found in the harbor.  I started shooting at Riverhead beach and slowly made my way out to Marblehead Neck again.  This time, I stopped in along Foster Street and made my way down to the Pleon pier. As I looked around, I found these two rowboats [...]

Soft Light Over Marblehead Harbor

By |2016-11-06T12:05:52-05:00September 12th, 2013|Categories: Marblehead Harbor|Tags: , , |

I mentioned on Monday's post that immediately after taking the shot of Devereux Beach on a foggy evening, I captured two soft sunset images - this is one of them.  I'm not sure why but the idea of using the fence as a compositional piece had not occurred to me previously - I typically would walk down the causeway a bit for the unobstructed view. On this particular night, the light was diffused by the fog so that there was great balance in the foreground elements of the fence and grass with the distant elements of Marblehead harbor filled with [...]

Old Glory on the Fourth of July

I don't think anyone of our generation will forget where we were on the morning of September 11th.  I have to admit to never quite understanding that concept when my parent's generation spoke of a similar feeling with JFK's assassination or seeing a man walking on the moon - but now it makes perfect sense. As today marks the 12th anniversary of that tragic day, I wanted to find an image that might serve well to counter the darker connotations of the anniversary.  I looked in my archive and found this image taken on July 4th, 2013 before the sun [...]

Watching the Storm Roll In From Cove Beach

By |2016-11-06T12:05:52-05:00September 10th, 2013|Categories: Chandler Hovey park|Tags: , , , , , |

We had what seemed like an endless run of rainy days to end August and begin September.  On this particular day (Sept 1st), the sky cleared shortly before noon and promised only a few hours of relief.  I decided to take advantage of the brief respite to head out and shoot under what should have been good light. I quickly decided to head to Marblehead Neck and then made stops at most of the public ways.  I ended at Cove Lane and stopped at the top of the chairs to survey this scene that lay before me.  As you can [...]

Life’s A Beach in Marblehead, MA

By |2016-11-06T12:05:52-05:00September 9th, 2013|Categories: Beach|Tags: , , , |

As the nights get colder and the air dryer, thoughts start to turn from Summer toward the coming Fall.  I thought I would start the week with an image that seems to toe the line between the two seasons with this foggy day at Devereux Beach. This image was taken on August 9th (the same day that I shot the lifeguard chair from last week and two nice soft sunset shots yet to be shared).  At this point, the fog had started to roll in and the setting sun lent some nice coloring to the low lying clouds.  I walked [...]

Flag on a Lamp Post

By |2016-11-06T12:05:52-05:00September 6th, 2013|Categories: Marblehead Harbor|Tags: , , |

A simple, clean composition to end the week.  This image comes from mid-July and a trip to Devereux Beach to capture a long exposure of the ocean [LINK].  Before taking that shot and while the sun was still high up in the sky, I spotted the American flag on this nearby lamp post on the mainland part of the causeway.  I chose a vertical or portrait orientation to capture the full length of the lamp post and went with a wide angle lens to heighten the separation from lamp post to the shores of Marblehead Neck.  The light was perfect [...]
