Reflections of Fall Colors in Marblehead

By |2016-11-06T12:05:50-05:00September 30th, 2013|Categories: Fall|Tags: , , , |

Fall seems to be coming early this year with trees turning easily two weeks sooner than they did last year.  I had started to notice the maples around town showing off their bright red colors and decided to drive around town on Saturday to see if I could find any to photograph. As I drove up Washington Street and passed Abbot Hall on my right, I saw a flash of red in my peripheral vision.  I quickly made the right to circle around and found this tree on the grounds of Abbot Hall at peak color.  The problem was finding [...]

Rays of Light over Goldthwait Beach

By |2016-11-06T12:05:50-05:00September 26th, 2013|Categories: Beach|Tags: , , , , |

Continuing with the great light featured this week, this is a shot from the afternoon of Sept 13th.  Storms seem to be missing us to the north and south on this particular day and I headed out in hopes of capturing the storms from a distance.  I started off at Devereux Beach where I shot under the cover of the picnic table structure. The clouds kept forming and braking and, at this point, broke at just the right spot to let in the rays of light from the sun.  You can just make out a spot of blue sky above [...]

Seagull at Dawn in Marblehead Harbor

By |2016-11-06T12:05:50-05:00September 25th, 2013|Categories: Marblehead Harbor|Tags: , , , |

I spent all of last week sharing images of a great dawn over Marblehead Harbor during which the fog gradually thickened as the sun rose.  Once the sun rose high enough in the sky, I sought out compositions to take advantage of the great diffused red light that bathed the harbor and boats.  This was one such scene. I was reasonable happy with the composition at first but felt it was missing something.  Then, as if drawn by an artist's eye, this lone seagull swooped in to just about the perfect spot in the frame.  For such an ugly bird, [...]

Riverhead Beach and the Causeway

By |2016-11-06T12:05:50-05:00September 24th, 2013|Categories: Beach|Tags: , , , |

I haven't shared a black and white image in quite some time and found this one waiting in the queue so thought it was a perfect opportunity to bring it out.  This image was taken on Sept 2nd at 7:50am.  This was a period of rain and fog which alternated between boring grey and beautiful moments of light.  On this particular morning, the sky seemed to be clearing so I headed out to try to capture some of that nice light. As I drove, the light seemed to be best to the east and I ended up on Ocean Avenue [...]

Heading Down to Gas House Beach

By |2016-11-06T12:05:50-05:00September 23rd, 2013|Categories: Beach|Tags: , , , , , |

The morning of June 12th ended up being a very busy one and would result in a number of different images being shared on this site.  I started with a shot of the harbor at dawn and then made my way around to State Street Landing followed by a stop at Little Harbor.  Below you can see the other images shared from this single morning's outing. By the time I reached this spot at Gas House Lane, the sun had climbed a fair amount but the clouds continued to diffuse the light.  I found this kayak holder that had left [...]

Foggy Morning in Marblehead Day 5 – Fort Beach and Fort Sewall

By |2016-11-06T12:05:50-05:00September 20th, 2013|Categories: Marblehead Harbor|Tags: , , , , , |

An hour and a half after starting this photo shoot on a foggy morning, I finally tore myself away from Marblehead Harbor and drove off in search of other vantage points.  I made my way down Front Street and ended up at Fort Beach facing the head of the harbor and Fort Sewall.  The sky had taken on an orange hue at this point and the fog remained thick.  I composed this scene to include the tide pools seen at low tide along Fort Beach while also including the great tree at Fort Sewall and the boats moored in the [...]

The Harvest Moon rises over Marblehead Harbor

By |2016-11-06T12:05:50-05:00September 19th, 2013|Categories: moon|Tags: , , , |

The Harvest Moon was due to rise tonight and I had been racking my head trying to decide on a new vantage point from which to capture the year's best full moon.  Last year, I had taken an image from Crocker Park and lucked out as the tree there had just started to change color owing to an early cold snap.  This year, I planned to include more of the harbor and figured on shooting from the State Street Landing. I circled twice to find parking and finally had to stop in the Crosby's lot (shhh...don't tell).  I then walked [...]

Foggy Morning in Marblehead Day 4 – Feeling Lucky

By |2016-11-06T12:05:50-05:00September 19th, 2013|Categories: Marblehead Harbor|Tags: , , , |

Day 4 of this week's posts all coming from the same foggy morning in Marblehead.  I mentioned before that these images were taken on September 11th which ended up being a 90 degree day and I headed out that morning at dawn hoping for a good sunrise.  As you saw in the posts earlier this week, both dawn and the sunrise were worth the few hours lost sleep. As the sun rose, the fog actually increased (rather than burning off as I expected).  At this point, I began to look for compositions with boats against the rising fog.  There is [...]

Foggy Morning in Marblehead Day 3 – Red Sun Rising

By |2016-11-06T12:05:51-05:00September 18th, 2013|Categories: Sunrise|Tags: , , , , |

For those who might have missed the start of this week's posts, I mentioned going out on the morning of Wednesday, September 11th on what ended up being a 90 degree day.  This was in large part thanks to the personalized forecast I received from Matt Noyes over Twitter the night before.  On Monday, I shared a shot from dawn and Tuesday featured some early Fall colors at Crocker Park. I returned to the spot of my earlier dawn shots in anticipation of the sunrise and found that the fog had significantly increased.  I still had my medium telephoto lens [...]
