Winter Sunsets at Chandler Hovey Park

Remember that spring-like day on Saturday when the ice/snow had finally melted and temps broke 60? This was the view of the winter sunset at Chandler Hovey Park where I headed to enjoy the last light of an unusually warm winter day. Little did I know I would spend the following day driving (and occasionally sliding) on streets around town capturing freshly falling snow.

A New Take on State Street

I promised more images from Sunday's beautiful snow; though it went on far too long to be considered picturesque after the fifth hour or so... Shortly after capturing the view of Old Town House, I walked down State Street and shot from each side of the street before stopping here at the site of the old King's Rook and getting this new composition. I wanted to include the sign of all the establishments that had set up at this location against the backdrop of Maddie's signage. Also that blue door worked well with the green, yellow and blues in the [...]

Snowflakes on Washington Street

It's funny how things work... I had gone out to capture the sunset after yesterday's spring-like weather and was frustrated by the light and lack of 'new' compositions. I drove home wondering if, after capturing landscapes of Marblehead for nearly 12 years, I had run out of new angles. Then I woke up this morning to picture perfect snow falling and drove out with camera in tow and came back an hour later with over 200 shots taken in four different areas and was thrilled to have come home with some new compositions. This is the first I'll share from [...]

Salute in the Snow – Glover’s Regiment Commemorates his life at Old Burial Hill

As they do every year for well over a hundred years, Glover's Regiment met at the Old Town House and marched up Washington Street to Old Burial Hill where three volleys were fired into the cold night to commemorate the life of General John Glover. This year featured a new recruit carrying a flag reading 'My Appeal to Heaven' as well as a first for me - the Regiment walked around Redd's Pond to reach General Glover's burial site due to the icy conditions along the steps leading up to Old Burial Hill. Here are images from the night: [...]

Perfect Mirror at Redds

On January 16th, rain fell after days of arctic cold and so, on the 17th, I headed over to Redd's Pond curious what the fallen rain had done to the frozen pond. As luck would have it, the effect was a perfect mirror unmarred by skates or snow. I don't think I've ever seen such a perfect mirror here before.

Above the Smoke

Continuing with the morning of January 15th, when the sun rose behind Tinker's Island it created incredible backlight on the smoke rising from the Atlantic Ocean. Once the sun had risen high enough in the sky, I tried to capture more images of the smoke coming off of each wave as it approached the shore. Here I lucked out with a lone bird whose feathers are backlit by the risen sun.

Smoke Washing Ashore

As luck would have it, we had another very cold morning in Marblehead on January 15th and I decided to capture the sea smoke as dawn broke behind Tinker's Island. Once the sun rose high enough, I turned the camera to capture smoke washing ashore with each wave and hitting the rocks along the causeway. The arctic air created interesting heat diffraction in sections of the image along the lamp posts.

Hint of Smoke at Marblehead Light

When temperatures drop, I tend to hit Front Street in the hopes of capturing sea smoke surrounding Chandler Hovey Park. Unfortunately with the high winds on the morning of January 11th, there was only a hint of smoke to be seen and captured on this arctic morning. I ended up liking my shot of the smoke around Cormorant Rock more so I posted that one and saved this in the 'to be published folder' until today.

Storm Break

Overnight, a strong storm swept through Marblehead bringing rain and very high winds. The rain passed just as a high tide approached at 11am which, combined with the full moon, made for some potential flooding around town. It was actually the Code Red call warning the causeway would be closing that prompted me to get out the door and explore town. I started off at the State Street Landing and watched as waves crested over the concrete barrier along Tuckers Wharf. From there, I moved on to Doaks Lane and the stairs overlooking Little Harbor from where I was able [...]

Arctic Sunrise over Tinkers Island

What a morning - and I thought it was cold on Tuesday... So on Tuesday the 11th, I had gone out before work to capture sea smoke and found just a hint of it to be found from along Front Street. With this morning's projected temperatures to be even lower, I thought I had a better chance despite the predictions for high winds. This time I headed for Devereux Beach knowing that the sun would rise over Tinker's Island and serve to backlight the rising steam from the Atlantic ocean. I arrived at 7am and dound some really nice sea [...]
