A UFO over Preston Beach ?

By |2016-11-06T12:06:24-05:00October 26th, 2011|Categories: Video|

I woke up this morning with plans to shoot the sunrise as the pending rain had me thinking we might get a decent one.  Headed down to Preston beach with some ideas in mind and set to work shooting the dawn.  I had noticed a small white dot in the sky away from the sun but didn't think much of it at the time.  Got home and loaded the photos on my computer.  As I went through them one by one, I noticed that white dot again.  It was shaped like an eye and stayed in the same [...]

A Purple Sky over Old Burial Hill

By |2016-11-06T12:06:25-05:00October 26th, 2011|Categories: Cemetery|Tags: , , , , |

June 20th turned out to be an incredible productive day.  It started on Beacon Street shooting the 'Marblehead or the Real World' sign and then progressed to a sunset shot of Gerry Island.  On my way home, I somehow found myself at the base of Old Burial Hill and figured I would wander up as the light faded in the sky.  I found this tree surrounded by gravestones and set up to photograph it.  Just then, the sky took on an incredible purple hue that grew stronger and stronger.  It just goes to show that the sky can continue to [...]

Here Lyes Buried – Halloween Week

After finding the praying mantis, we wandered around the tombstones until we found this one dated 1690 and holding the body of a gentleman 'aged about 70 years'.  My five-year-old son was so enthralled by the skull and writing that he sat there and carefully sounded out each word until turning to me and grinned from ear to ear having read the entire inscription.  I just had to photograph the stone at that point.

From the Grave – Halloween Week

It's the week before Halloween so I figured it was the perfect time to feature images taken in Marblehead's cemeteries.  This first one comes from Old Burial Hill.  My son and I attended the International Free Sail Regatta at Redd's Pond and, while everyone got their boats ready, we explored neighboring Old Burial Hill.   He quickly spotted this praying mantis standing on a gravestone with beautiful morning light behind him.  I crouched down and crept closer and closer with my zoom extended to try to capture every minute detail.  Next time you visit Old Burial Hill, keep your eye out [...]

A Fiery Sunset on Surf Street

Last night, I had the pleasure of attending the Warwick Theater Foundation's Auction night to raise money for a new movie theater in town.  I had donated a print for the auction and planned to head over around 6.  Looked out my window and saw some nice clouds and figured we just might get a nice sunset out of them.  I quickly drove down to the corner of Surf Street and Spray Avenue and set up the camera just as the sky seemed to catch on fire.  This was the peak of the beautiful sunset. I mentioned to one of [...]

Keep it Local – Stand up Paddleboarding

It's local business Friday and this is one of the newest businesses in town - Standup paddle-boarding.  This new approach to exploring the harbors in town came on to the scene at the end of June and really took off.  I was on Brown's Island when I saw this group float by and took this photo to illustrate just how close you can get to various landmarks by paddle-boarding.  Plus, as the weather cools, it is nice to be reminded of the amazing options that abound in the Summer.  Stay warm...

Out for a swim in a foggy harbor

Another image from that thick foggy Summer day back in 2008.  It's amazing what you can find when leafing through old photos.  I had remembered the causeway shot as a favorite but then explored others I had taken that day as I walked around our new hometown (we had moved here about 6 weeks earlier).  As I stood on the causeway taking in the view (what limited one there was with the incredibly dense fog), I found this trio of ducks making their way deeper into the harbor.  The juxtaposition of ducks and boats all enveloped in fog seemed great [...]

The Trees of Corn Point Road

Here is another image from a mid-Summer fog back in 2008.  After shooting the causeway, I ended up getting lost on Corn Point Road.  I happened upon this row of trees with their branches standing in stark contrast to the bright, thick fog beyond.  I have gone back to this spot on a number of occasions but have never found it to equal the image I captured over three years ago.

A New Causeway Draped in Fog

We moved to Marblehead in May 2008 and I was still learning about the town when a heavy bank of fog hit at the end of June.  There was a lot to explore but, thankfully, the causeway ended up on that list.  I didn't realize it at the time but the causeway had only recently completed renovations and, as you can see, the asphalt was still pristine.  Also, it appears the lights hadn't been completed yet as the poles stand empty.  Amazing that history is still being made in an almost 400 year old town and I am glad that I [...]

Alone in the Fog

By |2013-06-16T08:37:33-04:00October 17th, 2011|Categories: Marblehead Harbor|Tags: , , , |

It seems like we have had more foggy days this year than every before.  During a particularly long stretch in May, I ventured down to the water to try to capture the few boats already in the harbor amidst the dense fog.  This boat struck me for its bright blue and the lack of any other boats around it.  It seemed quite lonely yet peaceful in that one spot.  More foggy shots to come this week leading into 'cemetery week' after that.  Stay tuned...
