It's Friday so it is time to showcase another local business. Today it's Shipshape's turn. This is a wonderful store on Washington Street specializing in nautical items and carrying local artisans work. Ever since I first started this project, I had this image in mind. Trouble was, I could never seem to get the right conditions for this shot. Either the light was wrong or one of the trucks was out or the bay doors weren't all open. On a particularly hot Summer day, I drove by and almost couldn't believe my luck. I quickly parked and setup in front of the station. The Harvest Moon rose last night and I had planned out a perfect vantage point to capture it. Then I noticed the clouds at the horizon and had to quickly come up with a plan B. Turns out that plan B was waiting on the corner of Village Street and Highland Terrace. I carefully maneuvered the camera to the top of the fence while on my tiptoes and used it as a makeshift tripod while grabbing this shot. The moon ended up rising a bit too early and too fast so it lacked the color typical of the Harvest Moon. [...]
Walking across from Brown's Island to the mainland in late August, I turned and noticed this great scene before me. A single boat in Little Harbor with a beautiful house lying beyond and the perfect clouds above. I keep saying it but we really do live in an incredibly picturesque town!
The stained glass windows on Abbot Hall's third floor were recently restored to their original beauty. I had the opportunity to shoot them over the weekend with a nice backlight to make them glow and show off the intricate designs. Next time you're in Abbot Hall, make sure you head up there to view them.
Yesterday was the first day of the US-UK International Free Sail pond yacht regatta. It was a beautiful windy and warm October day to watch these boats sail along Redds pond. You couldn't ask for a more picturesque scene! The sailing continues today so make sure you head down there to watch this competition.
Mmmmm....Lime Rickey's. Nothing says Summer better than a chocolate chip frappe from Lime Rickey's when it opens its shop on Devereux Beach. I have yet to taste a better frappe on the North Shore and you really can't beat the location. Can't wait til Summer 2012!
The final image from this week's series of shots taken under the light of the full moon. In this one, you can more clearly see the incredible amount of light put out by Boston which seems to mimic a sunset. The star trails are just discernible in the bluer section of sky.
Continuing with the 'Sometime Around Midnight' series, and returning to a personal favorite, here is the lifeguard chair at Devereux beach. I admit to a bit of an obsession with these chairs and had to include one in the midnight series. Again this was taken in the dark but the exposure took two minutes and thus was able to capture all available light. You can see the moon overhead and the stars streaking by. The yellow tint on the chair is from the lights on the causeway. The distant lights to the right are caused by the city of Boston [...]
This is my favorite image taken on a mid-August night shortly after midnight. After spending some time at Devereux beach, I headed across the causeway to Castle Rock. I tried to capture the waves below and the stars above and was very pleased with this result when I loaded it on the computer at home. This is a seven minute exposure and, in that time, you can see the effects on the waves turning the churning water to mist. Also, the movement of the Earth relative to the stars is shown by the curved star trails in the upper left [...]
