Marblehead Harbor on a Foggy September Morning

Happy St Patrick's Day from Wednesdays in Marblehead!  I scoured the 'to be posted' archive for images containing green (a color we haven't seen in months during this cold long winter).  My eye was drawn to this view of Marblehead Harbor taken from the public way at the end of Peabody Lane. On this particular morning, a light fog had rolled in as I moved from one location to the next capturing images of Marblehead Harbor.  As you can see, this one includes a nice vibrant patch of green grass and bushes thus making it an easy choice for this [...]

Warm Sunrise over Marblehead Harbor

With yet another polar vortex threatening to bring temperatures down to below zero, I thought it fitting to bring this warm sunrise over Marblehead harbor out from the archives. This image was taken on August 3, 2013 at 5:41am from Crocker Park. Enjoy a few minutes of warmth in front of your screen before heading out this morning to brave the cold weather.

Fort Sewall in the Snow

On Wednesday, February 5th, Marblehead received a solid snowfall with nearly 12 inches falling over the course of the day.  Given the timing of the heaviest of the snowfall, I wasn't able to photograph snow covered scenes until early the next morning. I woke and left the house just before the blue hour began and made my way to Fort Sewall.  The wet snow had clung to the trees and the still air after promised that much of it might remain to serve as a great contrast against the branches.  I arrived to find this beautiful scene before me at [...]

Early Summer Evening over Marblehead Harbor

As this post goes live, we should be seeing the first flakes of an expected 10-12" snowfall on this early February day.  I couldn't make up my mind about whether to share an image of snow or sun this morning and turned to my Facebook page for advice.  The response surprised me with a nearly even split.  In the end, the thought of being transported (if only for a moment) to a warmer day won out and I decided to share this image taken on June 3, 2013 at 7:18pm. So almost exactly 4 months from now, it's a warm [...]

Calm Morning – Marblehead Harbor in the Blue Hour

On Saturday, February 1st, I woke early so I could drop off my son at the YMCA snowboarding/skiing trip to Nashoba Valley.  Not one to look a gift horse in the mouth, I had thrown my camera bag and tripod in the car and, after dropping him off at 6:45am, drove in search of good light. I watched the clouds as I drove and decided to shoot from the overlook at the end of Chestnut Street where it meets Cliff Street but the view wasn't quite what I had in mind.  I quickly jumped back in the car and drove [...]

Winter Sunset over Marblehead Harbor

I already shared one image from this sunset that took place on January 15th.  That view showed an explosion of color over Devereux Beach as seen from the causeway linking Marblehead and the Neck. Fifteen minutes before that shot was taken, I had been standing across the causeway trying to capture the last light of this Winter sunset over Marblehead Harbor.  The scene was calm and beautiful with a lone sailboat still (still!) in its mooring and soft ripples of water reflecting the pastel colors of the Winter sunset.  I thought this would be my favorite shot of the night [...]

Passing Boats in Marblehead Harbor

Last week's exercise of bringing out photos that were in the archive was so much fun, I thought I would do the same for this week.  This image was captured on September 19, 2013 as I waited for the Harvest Moon to rise over Marblehead harbor.  I had happened upon a singular opportunity to photograph the rising moon from atop a house overlooking the harbor and wasted no time in capturing images as soon as I climbed up to the roof and saw this view laid out before me. The harbor had been relatively still (though full) when I first [...]

Marblehead Skyline – A Perfect Morning

On December 17, I headed out of the house before dawn in hopes of capturing the moon setting over the Marblehead skyline.  I had missed the chance to photograph the moonrise the night before and was excited about the prediction of clear skies and cold temperatures for the next morning.  There was a small chance for sea smoke inside Marblehead Harbor and I could only imagine what that might look like with familiar buildings above a layer of sea smoke with the moon setting above. Sadly, the temperatures weren't cold enough for sea smoke.  I did however manage to capture [...]

A Late Summer Day on Marblehead Harbor

I don't know about you but this Winter is getting old quick.  Between the snow, blizzard conditions and days on end that stayed below the freezing mark, this has the feel of a very long Winter...and it's only mid-January.  The mini 'warm up' these past two days has only left me thinking of Summer even more. I decided to look back in the archives for some warm images and wanted to share this one today.  First, the specifics - this image was taken on August 16 at 7:25pm.  I can't imaging light at 7:30pm but I can definitely feel the [...]

Through the Grates at The Landing

A fun shot to end the week and another from a photo shoot during high tide on Friday, January 3rd after a storm departed Marblehead.  When I arrived at The Landing, I was shocked at how high the water in Marblehead Harbor had risen.  The boats looked like they might have floated onto the small parking lot if not tethered to their moorings. I made my way over to where the lobster boats are loaded and unloaded and was equally surprised to see ocean water coming up through the grates with the occasional waves in the harbor.  I set up [...]
