Abbot Hall

Caught in the Glow of the Setting Sun

So I had the usual long exposure photo planned for today but I just walked in from shoveling a fresh 7" of snow from the driveway and needed to see something much warmer and full of color and life. This past weekend, a coronal mass ejection (CME) occurred on the sun that managed to hit the Earth just right and set off auroras close to home.  I missed the Saturday spectacle as it took place at 5am and then decided to head out at sunset to catch the tail end of it.  I got to Chandler Hovey a bit early [...]

Sunset After Storm – Light Erupts Over the Harbor

I don't know about you but I sure am glad that the storm is passed.  That was a messy, angry, incredibly powerful storm that hunkered down off the coast and sent wave after wave and snowflake after snowflake at us.  At last count, Marblehead easily hit 16+ inches and it felt like a bigger storm in the end than the 'Blizzard of 2013' (aka Nemo). As with all storms though, there is the promise of a great sunset when the last flakes have fallen and the clouds start to break.  With that in mind, I set out after work to [...]

Snow Capped Houses and Abbot Hall

Back to the Blizzard of 2013 for this image of Abbot Hall taken from Crocker Park.  I love this view of Abbot Hall and have shot from this spot on a number of occasions and in various conditions.  When I was trudging through the almost two feet of snow that fell during the Blizzard of 2013, I knew that I would have to make it over to Crocker Park for a snowy version of this composition.  While the walk was brutal at times, the view did not disappoint with snow capped houses seemingly stacked on each other and leading up [...]

Long Exposure – Sun Rays over Marblehead Harbor

Today's long exposure image was taken back in April 2012.  The Spring is a great time to photograph the harbor as clouds are not an uncommon site and the waters remain free of boats allowing for longer exposures.  With a full harbor, the odds of keeping boats sharp with exposures stretching to seconds and minutes become very small.  On this day, I only needed to contend with one boat and tried to time this 5 second exposure when the winds calmed and the harbor was relatively still.  The sun rays were the clear focal point of the image and I [...]

In a Fog on Washington Street

Best of Show - Marblehead Festival of Arts 2013 As a photographer I've come to really love "bad" weather. It was for this reason that I woke up without an alarm on three successive mornings during the recent arctic blast and why a smile crept on my face as the warmup and light rain after blizzard combined to make for some dense fog on Monday night.  As soon as I got home from work, a meeting at a local hospital and reading a book with my son, I headed out in hopes of capturing the wonderful mood that fog adds [...]

Frozen Marblehead Harbor under Sunset’s Light

Throughout this past week, I have been going out at sunrise in search of sea smoke.  I ended up with only a few shots that captured the wispy fog coming off the relatively warm water.  On each trip out, however, I would note that parts of the Marblehead harbor had started to freeze and reminded myself to set out and capture this phenomenon in better light. On Saturday, I headed out with plans to shoot the full worm moon rise over the harbor and found myself set up 40 minutes early.  As the clouds began to form overhead, I started [...]

Abbot Hall Standing Over an Empty Harbor

On Wednesday, December 19th, I noted the clouds had started to gather as the sun set and decided to drive out to Parker Lane in hopes of a decent Winter sunset.  I got there just as the sun dipped below the horizon and captured a few different compositions.  As I was getting ready to pack up, some light pink color washed over the clouds directly over Abbot Hall.  I had all of two minutes of this great light and tried to make the most of it with this zoomed in view. You might have noticed that in most of my [...]

Marblehead’s Christmas Tree

The annual Christmas tree lighting took place a few weeks ago in the National Grand Bank parking lot.  I was too busy with the kids and friends to photograph the tree at the time.  One day, while at National Grand Bank, I spoke with Jim Nye and he offered to turn on the lights a bit early so that I could get a certain composition.  I awoke that Thursday and headed straight for the bank.  It was still too dark for the image that I had envisioned so I spent some time shooting the marquees of businesses with empty streets [...]

Long Exposure – Abbot Hall Under the Clouds

This Long Exposure Tuesday features an image of Abbot Hall taken in late March of this year.  I had set out on a windy day with great clouds in the sky to try to capture some images of buildings in town.  I had good luck with the direction of the clouds as they sailed over Our Lady Star of the Sea (LINK) and the Jeremiah Lee Mansion (LINK) but found them going the 'wrong' way over Abbot.  I only had this angle to shoot given the direction of the sun and was getting discouraged until I spied this one cloud [...]

Chasing the Light – One Sunset, Five Unique Photos

This will be a bit of a longer post to recap this great Summer sunset.  I also want to point out that there will not be any posts for the next few days as I am driving up to the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont to try and capture the incredible color up there. Today, I wanted to share the last image from a spectacular sunset that took place back in mid-August and explain some of my thought process at the time.  To refresh your memory, for a stretch of 3-4 nights in August, we had been getting these incredible deep [...]
