Fall

Where Mohawk and Pleasant Meet

Two weeks...that's how long I've watched and waited for this tree to get to this, the peak of its color display.  I had noted this great tree before whenever I drove by but started to get the sense that this Fall might prove an especially good one a few weeks ago.  The tree was holding onto its leaves and the color just started to change at the top initially.  Through rain and wind, the leaf drop was minimal and I kept up my scouting trips.  Finally, last week, I decided to make this my first stop on a foliage photoshoot [...]

Red Leaves and Old Town House

Last Wednesday proved to be a perfect one for shooting Fall colors around town.  This was my second stop of the morning and I got to this position on Mugford Street at a little after 9.  The sun was climbing up in the sky and offered a great backlight to this tree that really highlighted the colors of the leaves.  I liked the juxtaposition of the Fall colors against the yellow backdrop of Old Town House still covered in the red, white and blue.

The Maple Tree on the Corner

Last week, I put out a question on my Facebook page asking if anyone had a great tree in their neighborhood.  I received a few responses including one remarking on the near-peak maple at the corner of Bowden and Bessom.  As the sky cleared after a light rain and the light dipped lower in the sky, I decided to head over and check out the tree.  The report was spot on and I quickly set up in the parking lot at Gilbert and Cole to capture the maple. The most nagging part of this image was what to do about [...]

Foliage in the Fog at Seaside Park

Fall's colors have finally arrived in town and I have been trying to capture the great displays that are occurring throughout the town.  I started shooting on Wednesday and had some solid photos after an afternoon wandering throughout Old Town and beyond.  On Saturday morning, however, I was pleased to see some fog roll in and I instantly decided to shoot the one tree that had eluded me in the prior effort. This tree at Seaside park was in the wrong light when I had visited it on Wednesday but the fog brought an extra dimension to this scene that [...]

The Harvest Moon Rises over Marblehead Harbor

I had little hope for capturing this year's Harvest moon.  The thick clouds these past few days and today's rain made me think that this year's attempt would be a wash...literally.  A funny thing happened at 5pm as I milled around with the kids and neighbors outside, the sun came out and the clouds disappeared.  I quickly thought of places from which I might 'shoot the moon' and headed out to Crocker Park. I got there right at 6:25pm with a moon rise scheduled for 6:27.  I was thrilled to see that the main tree had started to show off [...]

The Island in the Harbor

On Friday, October 21st, I drove past this island which sits on the border between Salem and Marblehead in the harbor and noted that it had seemed to reach peak color for the Fall.  I had been scouting this island for years hoping but failing to catch it at its peak last year.  Luckily, I had been carrying my camera gear in my trunk on a daily basis that week and, even more so, I was able to finish up work at 4pm and get back in time for sunset.  I tried a number of angles from different vantage points [...]

Old Town House Draped in Falls Best

I had my eye on this tree for weeks and kept waiting for it to finally reveal its full color.  It cooperated very well by doing so on the first Wednesday in November.  I tried to set up for this shot but had a car parked directly in front that obstructed my view.  Just as I was about to give up, the car took off and I managed to snap this image during a short break in traffic.  Enjoy another scene of Fall as the weather holds out against the coming Winter for at least a bit longer. Don't forget [...]

Waterside Painted in Red

Fall is finally showing its true color in Marblehead and I have been fortunate to catch a few areas at their peak.  On Saturday, I was driving down West Shore when I saw this brilliant tree in Waterside Cemetery.  I quickly turned around and grabbed my camera for a few shots.  The trouble was that many of the trees in the background had already lost their leaves so the lone tree looked a bit depressing rather than vibrant.  I chose to process this photo using the Orton effect (which I also used on the Welcome to Marblehead sign a while [...]

Fall colors explode in Marblehead

On Tuesday, November 8th I found myself with a bit of time at 3pm with which to explore downtown.  I drove down Pleasant street with a destination in mind when I saw this tree lit up by a late Fall sun.  I quickly parked and set up to capture this beautiful tree at peak color perfectly framing the beautiful blue door of this house.  If you look carefully, you can just make out the tag explaining that this house was built by Samuel Martin, Housewright in 1828.  I found a wealth of color as I raced against the setting sun [...]

A Horse-Drawn Carriage Ride Through Town

The Fall Festival took place this weekend and we headed to old town to take part in the festivities.  There were sidewalk sales, kids activities and a horse-drawn carriage ride down Washington Street.  We stood in line and were fortunate to be in the front of the carriage where I kept busy shooting frame after frame of this incredible scene.  It's not hard to imagine similar horse-drawn carriages traversing Washington Street hundreds of years ago and passing these same sites.  I liked this view of Old Town House best of the series.
