Marblehead Harbor

Marblehead Harbor in the Blue Hour

In early September, I had woken up early enough to capture Marblehead harbor in the blue hour.  I drove down State Street to Front Street and parked at the Landing from where I walked around the corner and found this vantage point. The waters were incredibly still and, for some reason, all of the lights were on at the Corinthian Yacht Club at 5:45am when I clicked the shutter.  The golden glow of those lights complemented the blues in the sky and water with the bright green light of Marblehead Light reflecting in the still waters.

Between the Docks on Marblehead Neck

On Tuesday, October 14, I had made the decision to head out for a sunset shoot and chose Marblehead Neck as my destination.  It had been a while since I had explored one of the public ways on the Neck in particular and so I drove down to Harvard Street and then down to the water's edge.  I ducked under the closes dock and set myself up between the docks on Marblehead Neck as the sun began its slow descent. With Marblehead harbor still relatively full of boats, I composed this image to include both docks and Abbot Hall seen [...]

Still Waters at Sunset in Marblehead

On Tuesday, October 14, I had decided to head out at sunset which seemed to hold the promise of a decent showing.  I spent much of my time between two docks along Marblehead Neck.  As the sun set and the color began to creep into the sky, I noted this composition of the Corinthian Yacht Club with Marblehead Light poking out behind it. The waters were calm but I made them more so with this 30 second exposure.  The addition of a circular polarizer helped bring out the reflections in the still waters at sunset in Marblehead.

Purple Dawn over Marblehead

On the morning of October 8, a lunar eclipse was set to take place right at moonset/sunrise offering the chance to capture a 'blood red moon'.  Unfortunately, the skies were not cooperating when I arrived at Chandler Hovey Park and found thick cloud cover at the horizon as a storm passed just to the north of us. While I waited and hoped for a break in the clouds, the morning sun lit up the clouds in a brilliant purple hue.  There was very little light to work with and, even with a fairly high ISO of 800, the shutter speed [...]

Marblehead Harborfront

After the rain departed on Saturday, October 11, I decided to head out in hopes of capturing a few lingering clouds and some scenes of foliage around town.  On an earlier venture, I had noticed that the Marblehead harborfront (not sure if that is an official name for the area depicted here) was showing signs of Fall colors.  I made my way across the causeway to the public way at Parker Lane to see if the colors had indeed 'popped' in the interim. While there were some hints of orange and yellow in the trees, I was more intrigued by [...]

Marblehead Harbor Sunset

Back to the photo shoot on September 28 after yesterday's brief hiatus to capture scenes of Vermont's foliage.  I explained in Monday and Tuesday's posts that I had gone out on Sunday to capture views of our Indian Summer.  Well, after shooting around Little Harbor, I had made my way to Corinthian Lane hoping for a nice sunset. As the sun set below the horizon, I made my way down to the beach and captured this scene with boats still filling Marblehead Harbor.  With the cold wet weather of the past two days, it's only a matter of time before the [...]

Indian Summer in Marblehead

This past Summer in Marblehead has to rank among the most perfect (weather wise) in a very long time.  We had a mild June and July followed by a blast of heat and humidity at the end of August/early September and then the cool (but not too cold) days of late Summer/early Fall came.  This weekend, though, brought back the warmth and humidity to stave off that Autumn and soon-to-be Winter chill for at least a few more days.  While not meeting the technical definition of an Indian Summer in Marblehead (the Farmer's almanac states the warmth has to occur [...]

Harvest Moon and Marblehead Harbor

One more image from September 2013 to finish off this short week.  With the Jewish New Year upon us, I will be taking a break from the site for the next few days. I have shared a wider image (and the full story) of how I came to be on a rooftop while the Harvest moon rose over a full Marblehead Harbor.  You can read that story by clicking the image below.  As the moon rose, I tried a number of compositions and liked this zoomed in view a lot but held off sharing it at the time as it [...]

Marblehead Harbor Bathed in Fog

Continuing with the look back at September, this image was taken on September 11, 2013.  Marblehead was treated to dense fog on this particular morning and, rather than quickly dissipate after sunrise, the fog on this day stayed and stayed.  I ended up shooting scenes of Marblehead Harbor bathed in fog from four different locations. As the sun rose, it added a beautiful orange light to the thick fog and, in this scene, you can make out a few boats in the harbor (and not much else) under the bright early morning sun.

Low Tide in Marblehead – Riverhead Beach

Continuing from Friday's introduction to this week's theme, here is the wider view of Riverhead beach.  You can see the float that I had stood on for the earlier image in the center of the frame and hopefully appreciate just how low the tide had been to allow me to walk along Riverhead beach to the water's edge. From here, I had quickly returned to the causeway where I captured this image and then turned my attention to Devereux Beach...  Come back tomorrow for that image.
