Sunrise Over the Houses of Little Harbor

After photographing dawn from Hammond Park last Wednesday, I decided to drive out to Doaks Lane and shoot Gerry Island as well as the houses that line Little Harbor.  If you have followed this site for a while, you will likely recognize this composition.  I have shared some long exposures taken at sunset from this vantage point but never thought to photograph at sunrise.  It turns out that the sun was coming up at just the right angle to bathe these houses in great light.  The image needed amazingly little work at the computer apart from removing one wayward duck [...]

Day 5 – Lakefront Houses at Goldthwait Reservation

So this is really another shot from Saturday or 'Day 4' but you'll have to forgive the creative license.  Fridays tend to be the place for Experimental posts and this one seemed odd enough to fit the bill.  As I mentioned yesterday, I hadn't expected to shoot on Saturday as the storm had left and blue skies had replaced it.  After a heads up text from a friend, I was out at high tide shooting waves and then headed towards Devereux Beach.  As Ocean Avenue had been closed due to the waves, I ended up at Goldthwait Reservation. As I [...]

Snow Capped Houses and Abbot Hall

Back to the Blizzard of 2013 for this image of Abbot Hall taken from Crocker Park.  I love this view of Abbot Hall and have shot from this spot on a number of occasions and in various conditions.  When I was trudging through the almost two feet of snow that fell during the Blizzard of 2013, I knew that I would have to make it over to Crocker Park for a snowy version of this composition.  While the walk was brutal at times, the view did not disappoint with snow capped houses seemingly stacked on each other and leading up [...]

State Street After the Blizzard

Hope you aren't tiring of images of snow because I have a lot more to post.  This one comes from the evening that the Blizzard of 2013 ended.  The driving ban had been lifted at 4 and I made my way to Washington Street and then State Street to try to capture the aftermath.  Though I have photographed State Street a number of times, I have never found a good composition for these two houses that stand near Front Street and the harbor beyond.  On this day, as I turned up Front Street and looked up State, the composition practically [...]

A Late November Sunset over Marblehead Harbor

I went out last night in hopes that the clouds would break and allow me to shoot November's full moon.  As I drove out to my intended destination, I looked in the rearview mirror and saw the sun slowly set and the clouds break into great patterns.  I decided to head straight to Fort Sewall first and hoped the light would hold til I got there. I ran up the hill and explored both ends of the Fort but noted that the harbor side offered the best light.  As the sun set, the light was picked up by the water. [...]

Thankful for Two Great Years of Sharing Images of Marblehead

It's Thanksgiving and I wanted to take this opportunity to give thanks to this incredible community for welcoming me and showing such support of my attempts to photograph this beautiful town I feel fortunate to call home. Thank you to all those who commented on my images both here and on my Facebook page. Thank you to everyone who emailed me with words of support and encouragement when an image had a particular effect on them. Thank you to all those who welcomed me into their physical homes (and roofs) during the Rooftop Thursday series.  And to all those who [...]

From the Rooftops – The Balcony on Lee Street

On Tuesday, I came home from work to find the latest issue of Marblehead Home and Style magazine opened on our kitchen counter with a feature about me and this page!  I was honored and thrilled to see the story and, upon reading it, realized that I had not shown a 'rooftop' view since May.  I went back to my archives and found one of my early rooftop shots that had not yet been posted to the site. When I first thought of shooting Marblehead 'from above', the only way I could come up with for finding vantage points was [...]

The Coastline of the Neck

One more image from the recent exploration of a house at 405 Ocean Avenue.  After shooting the tea house, I wandered down to a patio built out of/onto the rocky coastline.  I managed to walk out onto a jutting cliff and saw this incredible view before me.  The rocky coast, the Atlantic ocean and waves, the homes on the neck, a lone flagpole and even Marblehead Rock all stood before me.  I just had to time this one right to capture some water cascading off the nearby rocks to add a bit more tension to the scene.  It helped that [...]

In the Blue Hour at Devereux Beach

The blue hour (which often lasts minutes rather than a full hour) is found between the darkness of twilight and the light of dawn.  It occurs again after sunset but before full dusk.  It's a great time to be out shooting and, on this particular day, I had decided to venture down to Devereux beach. The original plan for this morning was to chase the supermoon setting but those clouds near the horizon spoiled that plan.  Instead I found myself on the beach at low tide with the sand still wet and forming a beautifully reflective surface.  I managed a [...]

From the Rooftops – The Town and Abbot Hall

Just when I thought I would run out of rooftop views, this location literally fell into my lap!  A friend from Marblehead who had recently moved to London was visiting and rented an incredible condo at 18 Prospect Street.  We headed over there for dinner and I brought my camera when I heard about the rooftop balcony view of Abbot.  Though we ended up losing the light pretty fast, this scene before me made for a great outing. I love the view of Abbot Hall standing tall among the houses below.  It feels a bit like a castle on the [...]
