This Too Shall Pass

On Friday March 13th, I chased a passing storm and ended up on Front Street from where I started off shooting a tight composition of the lighthouse and Neck with some waves breaking on the rocks of Fort Beach. I later zoomed out and captured the full view including the missing Great Tree and shared that image earlier. I came back to this image this weekend after my first week 'off' work. As a part-owner of our Allergy practice, I have not been off at all. We have tried to pivot to telemedicine all while grappling with the very real [...]

Gone but not Forgotten

On Friday, March 13th, on what would end up being my last real day of work for the forseeable future, I headed out at 5:30pm to chase some light. I had no destination in mind as I drove down Pleasant Street then State. I pulled into and out of the Landing lot and then headed down Front Street until I pulled over at Fort Beach. That spot offered me the best view of the interesting clouds and light over Chandler Hovey Park and I started off shooting a tight composition of that section of this image with my zoom extended. [...]

Snow Moon in a Winter without Snow

I lucked out with tonight's outing to capture the snow moon rising when I contacted my book designer and was invited over to shoot from her husband's third floor office window. Not only did I have a perfect vantage point, but I was able to escape the brutally cold wind that would have left me cold but also caused the camera and lens to move as well impacting the final image. The timing of the full moonrise wasn't ideal as the moon climbed above the horizon more than 30 minutes before sunset. As it happened, the moon had to rise [...]

Top 10 of 2019 – #8 – Hunting the Moon in Marblehead

On October 13th, I went out to capture the Hunters moon rising over the neck and was initially upset with the cloud cover that prevented my capturing any detail in the moon.  As soon as the moon rose over the Corinthian, I noticed how nicely the path of light mirrored Marblehead Light's green beacon reflected in the harbor and captured this image. For making the best of a situation and for a nearly full and calm harbor on this mid-October evening, 'Hunting the Moon in Marblehead' is my eighth favorite image of 2019.

Top 10 of 2019 – #9 – Summer Nights at Crocker Park

When I was choosing my Top 10 images of 2019, this shot captured from Crocker Park on July 21 was an easy choice but deciding where to place it was difficult. It's a very simple image and composition focusing on the mouth of the harbor with boats filling all but a few moorings. The sky was perfect with great contrast and detail in the clouds above. While I tend to be more excited by images captured at sunrise or sunset with incredible orange, red, pink or purple skies, there's something to be said for a perfect blue sky casting soft [...]

September Sunset over Marblehead Harbor

I'm not quite sure what color I'm looking at in this September sunset over Marblehead harbor. This was the view I had from Crocker Park on September 4th when a storm passed just before sunset and I witnessed a huge orange sky and incredible clouds over the Neck. I had to use my widest lens in a vertical orientation and shoot a multi-image panorama to take in the full scene. I was still shooting as the light changed and, five minutes later, I was staring at this. Is it still orange? Or pink? Or pink-orange??? Whatever the color, the sky [...]

Hunting the Moon in Marblehead

As disappointed as I was in yesterday's photo excursion, today more than made up for it.  I had decided on a whim to drive up to New Hampshire on Saturday to explore foliage and followed some online suggestions on peak foliage. Between the flat light and less than ideal compositions, I ended up disappointed with the excursion. Today started off much better with great weather in town. I headed out early to scout out locations for tonight's Hunters moonrise and had decided on either Crocker Park or Ferry Lane as offering the vantage point I was looking for. I had [...]

Rocky Shores of Chandler Hovey Park

Sunday, September 1st was the first time I had been out to capture new photos in nearly a month and, with the nice cloud cover, I decided to bring along my drone. I had flown the drone only once in the past year having spent much of 2017 and 2018 exploring Marblehead from the air. I had realized that the drone offered other possibilities than simply shooting from 100-400 feet in the air and had an idea in mind when I drove out to the Neck. I arrived to find the parking lot at Chandler Hovey packed on this Labor [...]

The Corinthian and Marblehead Light

I mentioned in Monday's post of the sunset off the Village Street dock that we had just returned from a boat ride around Marblehead Harbor. This image of the Corinthian Yacht Club and Marblehead Light was captured towards the end of that circumnavigation. I hadn't approached the CYC from this angle before and marveled at the proximity of the lighthouse on Chandler Hovey Park to the facade of the yacht club. As luck would have it, two of the club's launches were parked with one showing the CYC name on its rear. It was a Friday night in mid-July so [...]

Corker of a Sunrise

I can't recall what led me to wake up at 5am on April 14th but, as soon as I was up, I headed straight for Crocker Park and was rewarded with a corker of a sunrise. This is my third (and final) image from this morning where the sky shifted through red, pink and purple and the calm water reflected the light in the sky. I played with the composition of Marblehead Light, Childrens Island and the lone sailboat with wider and tighter shots but this was a really nice in-between that stayed in the 'to be published' folder until [...]
