Long Exposure – Reflections on Little Harbor

In February 2012, I was just starting to get the hang of these long exposure images.  On this particular day, I had gone out in hopes of capturing Gerry Island at sunset.  While I started to photograph the island and little harbor surrounding it, my eye quickly latched on to the collection of houses along Fort Sewall Terrace that faced the harbor.  As the sun began to set, the colors in the sky took hold and I started to shoot longer and longer exposures in the fading light.  I had previously shared an image with the houses reflecting in little [...]

A Puffin? In Marblehead?!

On Tuesday, a fan of my site asked if I ever photographed wildlife - especially birds.  I admitted that I had never been interested in shooting birds - it is an incredibly challenging (and expensive) branch of photography that requires inordinate patience.  Then he mentioned that he had seen a puffin in Little Harbor and I quickly changed my tune.  A puffin?  In Marblehead?!?!  This was too good to be true I thought.  I was told that he seemed to appear with some regularity at mid-tide.  The fan had been doubtful as well but noted that he definitely moved as [...]

Long Exposure – The Tree and the Harbor

This image is a year old and has been hanging in my office for just about that long but I just realized that I have never shared it here.  In early January 2012 (the same day as my color image of this scene from the end of Doak's Lane), I made this image that was intended as a square crop.  The color photo from sunset remains one of my favorites but this black and white is a close second.  I love the feel of black and white for these long exposure images (180 seconds in this case).  The processing was [...]

Curves in the Water Lead to Brown’s Island

It's Tuesday and that can only mean another Long Exposure image to share with you today (well, that and a pretty important election...).  Today's image comes from the day before Superstorm Sandy arrived.  I had scouted out this small discharge pipe a while ago but realized I needed an astronomical high tide to realize the image I had visualized.  For good or bad, Sandy delivered on that wish. As the tide peaked on October 28th, I made my way out to this area and found the water covering the length of the concrete covered pipe.  More incredible than the water [...]

Dawn over Little Harbor and Marblehead Light

On Saturday morning, I decided to wake up early in hopes that the predicted 35 degree temps would lead to some nice mist/fog coming off the ponds.  I drove by Redds and Black Joes but neither was 'misting' nor were there good colors to speak of.  Instead, I decided to park on Beacon Street and get some nice colors of the dawn reflecting off the water in Little Harbor.  There were a few boats in the near harbor that I took pictures of but preferred the longer view looking out towards the lighthouse.  The break in the choppy water served [...]

Long Exposure – Clouds Fly Over Browns Island

I remember when I took this photo in February that it had been prompted in large part by someone at the Reporter asking if I had any shots of Brown's (or Crowninshield) Island.  I had to confess I didn't have any that featured the whole island and so I made it a point to head down to Harding Lane and find a good vantage point. I had chosen a day with good clouds and a nice wind and decided to shoot this as a long exposure.  The fading light made exposures quite difficult and I managed a single good image [...]

Long Exposure – Rocks Leading to Gerry Island

It's Tuesday and time for another Long Exposure image.  In mid-February, I drove out at sunset with the the aim of shooting some long exposure images.  The sky held promise with scattered clouds and the sunset did not disappoint.  This was the outing in which I captured one of my favorite images - Doaks Lane Sunset.  Immediately before that image, I had captured this one. The tide was just perfect for me to walk down to the beach and navigate to these rocks.  I set up the tripod and opened the shutter for 118 seconds to get this image.  As in the [...]

From the Air – Little Harbor

If you saw my post last Tuesday, you'll know the back story to how this photo came to be.  If not, I highly recommend reading that first and then coming back to this image. As we flew over Marblehead harbor, I quickly took some photos looking down over Little Harbor.  It really is amazing to see this area from this angle and I definitely did not appreciate it at the time.  As your eye works its way around, you notice Gerry Island, Fort Sewall, Front Street beach and the houses (especially those on Doak's Lane). Hope you enjoy this aerial [...]

Morning Comes to Little Harbor

In early December, I ventured out at sunrise to explore the light and various spots in town.  As I drove through Old Town, I found myself at the small launch near the Marblehead Lobster Company off Orne Street.  The tide was at the perfect point to make for these tiny waves along the launch area and the water was calm enough to reflect the morning light.  Not a bad way to start the day...

Docked in Little Harbor

For good or bad, this Winter without snow is forcing me to go back into the archives to try to remember what Winter should feel like.  I had taken this photo in early January 2011 after a snow storm had blanketed the town in a fresh coat of the white stuff.  In fact, this photo was taken shortly after the one of kids playing hockey at Redds pond. This is a panorama of a 3 shot series merged together and processed to bring out the soft light of a Winter sunset.  The lone boat in the foreground, the edges of [...]
