Light at the End of the Rainbow

Last night, storms were predicted to pass near Marblehead between 7 and 8pm.  Knowing that storms make for incredible light at sunset, I decided to head out after dinner and see if that might be the case on this occasion.  The clouds seemed to be coming from the direction of Boston and I therefore chose Chandler Hovey Park as my destination. I wasn't thrilled with the light when I first arrived at Chandler Hovey and stared up at Marblehead Light.  There was little definition in the clouds and they seemed too thick to allow any sun to shine through.  After [...]

Rainbows and Storm Clouds

On Tuesday, May 12th, I decided to play hooky from a meeting that promised to be both boring and less than useful by heading to Devereux Beach.  There wasn't anything interesting predicted for sunset but, when I arrived at Devereux, I found impressive clouds with great structure extending up from the horizon.  As I waited for the clouds to build and for the sun to drop lower in the sky, I set up for a panorama along the causeway that would end up as a more than 87 megapixel image when all was said and done (I'll share that later in the [...]

Marblehead at the End of the Rainbow

Anyone remember that incredible rainbow that shone on June 17th?  If not, click here to see the full double rainbow over Ram's island LINK. After capturing the full rainbow, I recomposed looking for other unique scenes with the bright rainbow only partially in the frame.  This image of the house at the end of a cliff with the brightest part of the double rainbow caught my eye but has been waiting in the 'to be posted' queue for almost two months now.  Here it is now to mark the end of my third year posting photos on Wednesdays in Marblehead. Come [...]

Summer Rainbow over Marblehead Harbor

On Monday, July 29th, I drove home from work in the sunniest rainstorm I can remember.  The whole way (all 3 miles of it), I wondered if 5:30pm was too early for a proper rainbow to form.  As I dipped down Lafayette street and made my way toward the Welcome to Marblehead sign, I got my answer in the form of a bright sharp rainbow over Salem harbor. With that, I called ahead and pleaded with my wife for a quick photo shoot.  I had just enough time to grab my camera and head toward Marblehead Harbor.  I tried to [...]

Firing the Cannon Under a Rainbow – Dolphin Yacht Club

Five yacht clubs in five weeks and it ends with a bang!  For those who might have missed the start of this project, it all began on May 20th when I found myself facing a lackluster sunset and decided to shoot the first of the yacht clubs firing the cannon at sunset.  It was supposed to finish on Tuesday night at the Dolphin Yacht Club.  I had called ahead a week prior and spoken to a wonderfully friendly South African gentleman who ran the launch.  He invited me down to shoot the cannon and the stars seemed to align well [...]

Full Double Rainbow over Marblehead

On Monday night, I shared the story and first image from my wild race to capture the incredible double rainbow that took shape at sunset over Marblehead.  [LINK] As I mentioned, I had driven to Bass Rock Lane as it was the closest spot to the house offering unobstructed views of the water.  Shortly after capturing the image of a double rainbow that I shared immediately after coming home, I turned the camera to the portrait/vertical orientation and fired off 6 shots in the hopes of capturing the full double rainbow. While the earlier shot required little in the way [...]

Full Rainbow over Ram’s Island

I was just finishing the last page in the Percy Jackson book I had been reading to my son when I hear my wife scream.  She opened the door and told me to grab my camera and get out as fast as possible.  As soon as I stepped outside I saw the most vibrant rainbow I had ever seen.  I knew I had minutes to shoot it and drove out as fast as I could to the nearest spot with a good vantage point - Spray Avenue.  I parked, swapped out to put my widest lens on and ran down [...]

Rainbow at the End of the Causeway

I started the week with an image of a rainbow and decided it fitting to finish in the same manner.  This rainbow has appeared here before when I chased it to Chandler Hovey park.  Early on, I had shot another (smaller) rainbow off the ocean before turning and seeing this one at the end of the causeway.  I couldn't help but try a few shots to compose the rainbow with the lampposts on the causeway.  This was one of my favorites from the earlier part of the night.

Rainbows over Devereux Beach

I'm fairly certain that I did not have a single rainbow image in the first three summers of living in Marblehead.  All of a sudden, I find myself with so many I have to include two in this one post!  Back in early June, a storm came through in the evening as I was getting home from work.  I had enough time to grab the camera bag and race down to Devereux beach.  When I got there, I saw this vibrant rainbow and sought a good composition to include some landmarks.  I settled on the shelter (though wish the trash [...]

A Rainbow over Marblehead Light

On July 3rd, immediately preceding an epic sunset over the harbor (click to view), this cloud and its accompanying rain shower made a brief appearance over Marblehead Neck.  I had just gotten to Crocker Park when I saw this rainbow form.  I had just enough time to grab the camera, throw on a polarizer (to bring out the light in the rainbow and more clearly show its colors) and grab this image.  Less than a second later, the colors began to fade and the rainbow was gone.
