First Sailboat in the Harbor

On April 25th, I headed out to Crocker Park to capture the pink moon rising over the harbor.  On the way, I had stopped to capture a beautiful cherry blossom on Mugford street (posting that one tomorrow) and I still arrived a bit early.  Though the sunset was fairly muted with the lack of interesting clouds, the novelty of a single sailboat in the harbor convinced me to grab this image. I do like the reflected light off the houses that line Chandler Hovey Park.  Just wish the lighthouse had been lit at the time...

Frostbite Sailing in Marblehead Harbor

My best friend from college came to visit this weekend and on Sunday we decided to head out with my kids to Crocker Park.  I hadn't photographed my kids in weeks so I grabbed the camera thinking I would get a few nice shots of them outside.  We couldn't ask for better conditions as the sun kept breaking through the clouds and warming us up.  The kids climbed the rocks and I tried to capture their enthusiasm.  It wasn't long though before I noticed that frostbite sailing (or 'frostbiting') was taking place in the harbor. With the harbor still fairly [...]

Spring Comes to Hammond Park

Repeat after me 'Two More Months'... I don't know about you but this Winter is feeling very loooong after the weekend snow storm following a blizzard.  There was no way I was posting a snow photo today so I went back to the archive and found this photo taken on April 14, 2012.  You can't beat the view from Hammond Park when the trees start to bloom and a race takes place in the still empty harbor.  This was the first photo I captured when I raced to this spot last April.  I shared another version with a closer view [...]

Fall Regatta at Redds Pond

Yesterday, I drove around town looking for hints of Fall foliage.  I hit all of my favorite trees from last year and found that many were still in the early stages of turning.  As I drove up Pond Street, I happened upon a great regatta taking place at Redds Pond.  I decided this was too great a scene to pass up.  I set up for a view to include the backdrop of the house across the pond and Old Burial Hill.  As the boats came by under perfect conditions, I captured this pair in the foreground.  Make sure you come [...]

Sailing Past Chandler Hovey Park

One Sunday in August, our former neighbors (and now friends) invited us out for an early afternoon sail.  We made our way out of the harbor and I was pleased to see plenty of other boats doing the same.  As the kids took turns piloting the boat and the adults took care to make sure we followed a steady course, I happily shot from the side.  Though I haven't had many opportunities to shoot from the water, I have a few favorite images from those rare chances.  There's just something about being on the water and composing images from that [...]

The Lynx Arrives in Marblehead

On Wednesday, the Privateer Lynx arrived in Marblehead as part of the Maritime Festival.  I had photographed the Lynx arriving for the first time last year in the midst of rain and fog.  As that shot from Fort Sewall had turned out well (click here to see it), I decided to try shooting from Chandler Hovey Park this time around.  I climbed on the rocks that jut out from the east side of the parking lot and tried to capture the Lynx with a suitable Marblehead backdrop.  The boat was a bit too far from Marblehead Rock and then came [...]

Chasing the Light 3 – Lone Sailboat in the Harbor

The sun had set and the light kept getting better as I stood on Cove Lane (check out Monday and Tuesday's posts if you have missed any part of this Chasing the Light series).  As I watched the light, I decided to change lenses and try to isolate a lone sailboat in the harbor with this great light reflecting off the water. This time, I opened the aperture as far as it went (f/4) so that the sailboat would be in sharp focus with softer focus on the foreground and background.  This helped further isolate the boat.  I also made [...]

Slow Start to Race Week

I was hoping to catch a few sailboats racing by the lighthouse today but, as I drove across the causeway, I noted a thick fog had settled in the harbor.  I took a few photos of the fog as I made my way up to Chandler Hovey Park and, when I arrived, noticed that the boats were all waiting. Waiting for the wind, the fog to clear....just waiting. I took this image in the midst of some particularly dense fog.  The only way to tell it's in color is by the red on the nearby sail.  I actually liked the [...]

Sailing on a Summer Breeze

On this mid-June day, the temperatures had climbed and I was in charge of the children as my wife had a meeting to attend.  After dinner, we piled in the car and headed to Lime Rickey's for some ice cream and then immediately drove to Chandler Hovey park to enjoy it while hoping for a decent sunset.  I spent the bulk of the night photographing my kids but took time to shoot this sailboat as it made its way to harbor.  The light was reflecting off its sail and casting a further reflection in the water.  I decided to shoot [...]

Double Rainbow over Children’s Island

We had a great lightning storm pass through town on Saturday night during which I captured a number of bolts over the harbor (click to view).  Immediately after the show, I raced home to avoid the brunt of the rain and wind.  As the storm wound down, I noted the sun dropping below the clouds and thought I would try to push my luck and hunt for rainbows.  As I drove toward the causeway, I saw one off Devereux beach and quickly stopped to grab some shots.  It was small and I resigned myself that I had missed my chance [...]
