Snow Blankets Redd’s Pond and Pond View

That was a pretty incredible first snow of the season!  Not really...barely any ended up sticking.  As I watched the slush fall, I combed through the archives and found this image from January 2009.  The original processing left much to be desired so I got to work trying to breathe new life into the photo.  I'm much happier with it now and hope it conveys that feeling of being out at Redd's as the snow drifts down on a perfect Winter day.

Pink Clouds at Dawn Over Marblehead Harbor

Something told me that Tuesday morning's sunrise might be worth an early wake up so I dutifully set the alarm a bit early and made my way out to Front street at 5:30 in the morning.  At first, the skies disappointed with some decent morning light but no clouds to reflect the pinks that typically accompany a late Fall sunrise.  Just as the sun threatened to break above the clouds, these wisps showed up and quickly fell into place. I was shooting in landscape (horizontal) format and quickly switched to this portrait (vertical) orientation to get the tops of the [...]

Peak Foliage at Waterside Cemetery

Hope you aren't tired of the bright colors of Fall yet.  This year's foliage seemed to take forever to get going and then was hampered by rain and wind before finally ending with Superstorm Sandy.  In the midst of that, I tried to capture the color that appeared for the shortest of times in town.  On this particular day in mid-October, I was due to drive up to Portsmouth for a conference.  When I saw the fog roll in that morning, I just knew that I would have to add a few stops to the drive.  One of the first [...]

School Colors on display at Marblehead High School

For the past few weeks, I've been on the hunt for examples of great foliage in town.  Everytime I drove down Pleasant Street, I would look up at Marblehead High School and note the status of the trees there.  On October 27th, the day before Hurricane Sandy was due to arrive, I decided to make a quick stop in the afternoon.  I figured this would be my last chance to shoot the trees there for the season and thought the timing might just work out. As I drove around the rotary and parked, I was thrilled to see the oranges [...]

Leaves on Fire at the Old Post Office

Here is yet another view from the very productive foliage hunt that took place on Wednesday, October 17th.  Shortly after leaving the Tree on the Path, I found myself on Pleasant street to check the status of this lone tree.  I had noticed the unusual shape of the tree in my rearview mirror of all things a few weeks previously and liked the location...in front of the Old Post Office.  It turns out that this tree was showing off its great colors as well on this particular morning and I sought to capture them.  Between the color of the leaves [...]

Fall Colors come to the Path

A rare Saturday post brought about in large part to the great conditions I found when shooting on October 17th.  I had planned one shot for that day but had scouted out a number of other possible spots and found great colors at each point.  The early morning light helped a great deal as did the circular polarizer which allowed me to cut down on light reflecting off the leaves and bring more vibrancy to the images. This was taken across from the post office along The Path.  The toughest decision was whether to isolate the tree from the graffiti [...]

Gatchell Field and the Old Maple Tree

I love the huge tree that stands in the midst of Gatchell's field and have been hoping for a good shot of it at peak foliage colors.  With each passing year though, the tree seems to turn earlier and lose it's leaves far too quickly.  I'm not sure if it is stressed or sick but I just haven't been able to get the timing right for a decent image. This year, I kept passing the tree without seeing that moment but, after a rain storm, decided to head out one more time.  The top of the tree was bare at [...]

Where Mohawk and Pleasant Meet

Two weeks...that's how long I've watched and waited for this tree to get to this, the peak of its color display.  I had noted this great tree before whenever I drove by but started to get the sense that this Fall might prove an especially good one a few weeks ago.  The tree was holding onto its leaves and the color just started to change at the top initially.  Through rain and wind, the leaf drop was minimal and I kept up my scouting trips.  Finally, last week, I decided to make this my first stop on a foliage photoshoot [...]

Red Leaves and Old Town House

Last Wednesday proved to be a perfect one for shooting Fall colors around town.  This was my second stop of the morning and I got to this position on Mugford Street at a little after 9.  The sun was climbing up in the sky and offered a great backlight to this tree that really highlighted the colors of the leaves.  I liked the juxtaposition of the Fall colors against the yellow backdrop of Old Town House still covered in the red, white and blue.

Foliage in the Fog at Seaside Park

Fall's colors have finally arrived in town and I have been trying to capture the great displays that are occurring throughout the town.  I started shooting on Wednesday and had some solid photos after an afternoon wandering throughout Old Town and beyond.  On Saturday morning, however, I was pleased to see some fog roll in and I instantly decided to shoot the one tree that had eluded me in the prior effort. This tree at Seaside park was in the wrong light when I had visited it on Wednesday but the fog brought an extra dimension to this scene that [...]
