Summer Can’t Come Soon Enough

As we're treated to warm days (interspersed with cooler and rainy ones), I can't help but look forward and keep thinking that Summer can't come soon enough.  This image was taken at sunset on August 4th, 2015 from one of the public ways in town. As Summer hits its peak, Marblehead Harbor is filled with boats and it's a wonder that they can navigate through the moorings and make it out to sea.  This particular spot allowed me to capture the boats stacked deep in the harbor with the perfect backdrop of Abbot Hall and a warm Summer sunset behind [...]

Summer Dawn at Redd’s Pond

Today's image was taken at dawn on July 1st, 2015.  I had woken up early in order to shoot the dawn breaking over Doliber Cove and then quickly drove over to Redd's Pond when I noticed the clouds reflecting that morning light. I shared another image from this morning shortly after taking it but had created this panorama version as well.  Though the pink light of dawn was more vibrant in the single frame, there was something about capturing the full length of this pond that appealed to me.

Cherry Blossoms Blooming in Marblehead

Those who have followed this site for a while will know that I have a small obsession with cherry blossom trees.  We lived in Washington, DC for 3 years while I completed my residency in Internal Medicine at Georgetown and, from that point on, Spring has been firmly tied to the peak of these trees. I found this patch of cherry blossoms in the Harris Street Cemetery several years ago and have tried to shoot them at peak each Spring.  This particular image was taken on April 28, 2015 - I wonder when the trees will peak this year...

Sea Smoke at Sunrise

I was going through images in my 'to be posted' folder to share this week and passed by the series of sea smoke shots captured on a freezing Valentine's Day.  It's hard to believe that this was the scene at sunrise in Marblehead Harbor only 6 weeks ago with temperatures well below zero (even before taking into account the wind chill). I've shared a few images of the sea smoke rising from the ocean but still have many more to show.  As the light changed and the smoke danced across the water, the compositions seemed to be endless.

Clouds on Fire – Marblehead Harbor

On Friday night, as the sky exploded in pinks and purples, I pulled out my iPhone and snapped a quick photo to share on my Facebook page.  This image was taken immediately after as the vivid pink light of sunset created the illusion of clouds on fire over Marblehead Harbor. The scene before me was incredible to behold in person.  The incredible pink light on the underbelly of the clouds, the dramatic structure of those clouds, a lone pier extending into Marblehead Harbor, and the familiar skyline of Marblehead with Abbot Hall all captured in a single frame. I packed [...]

Pastel Clouds over Marblehead Neck

Today's image comes from February 21 and a relatively warm Winter day at Fort Sewall.  I had gone out with the aim of shooting the moon but a solid sunset developed which grabbed my attention well before the moon rose. As the sun set, it spread soft light that reflected off these pastel clouds over Marblehead Neck.  I love this spot at Fort Sewall as I am able to capture the whole of the Neck in one frame (using my wide angle lens) and showcase its island-like appearance. I chose to include the rocky shore and white surf to break up [...]

Golden Light over Marblehead’s Skyline

I had planned to share images of Friday night's spectacular sunset this week but last night's full moon offered an opportunity I couldn't miss.  With that captured, shared and voted on (the final shot with the face won by a landslide), it's time to turn back to Friday night's show. On Monday night, I shared an image taken at the peak of the pink and purple color and Tuesday night featured an image showcasing the incredible clarity that developed early on.  Tonight's image was taken at 6:35pm - in between the first two shared images.  As the sun set lower [...]

Through the Trees and Over the Moon

I went out tonight with a plan in mind to capture the full worm moon rising over Marblehead Neck.  I arrived at my destination only to realize I had miscalculated the location of the moon rise and quickly had to change my plans.  I started by heading to Fort Beach to get a sense of the moon's location and the cloud cover and then consulted an app with a particular shot in mind. This view of Abbot Hall is one I have never captured before.  It was taken from immediately in front of the 7-11 at Miller's Plaza (which also [...]

Clear View Across the Harbor

Continuing with images captured during Friday night's remarkable sunset, this view of houses along Marblehead harbor was one of the first shots taken.  I had started off shooting along Foster Street and was struck by the incredible clarity of the houses and Abbot Hall seen across the harbor. I watched as the clouds churned overhead and a break formed on either side of Abbot Hall and started to fill with the golden light of a pending sunset.  As luck would have it, a single beautiful ship was moored in Marblehead harbor and turned to its side just as the light [...]

Pink Clouds and Purple Haze – Corker of a Marblehead Sunset

Marblehead, you never cease to amaze me.  It has been almost 6 years since I started this Wednesdays in Marblehead project and I still find myself going out to chase a sunset in the hopes of capturing some good light and then, once in a while, something like this develops and it's all I can do to take a breath and try to do some justice to the beauty in front of my eyes. On Friday night, I headed out the door after work as clouds developed and then broke apart near where the sun was due to set.  I [...]
