Bathing in the Light

Only a few minutes after capturing yesterday's image, a golden retriever came onto Riverhead Beach with its owner in tow.  He (or she) walked without hesitation to the water's edge and into the very cold water of the harbor.  As the golden retriever passed under the light of the slowly setting sun, I captured this frame featuring the dog quite literally bathing in the light of the sun with the lamp posts of the causeway above. I hope the owner doesn't mind that I took a bit of creative license in cloning her out of the final image.  I thought [...]

Red, White and Blue in Marblehead Harbor

On Sunday, March 13, I headed out of the house hoping to capture a beautiful and late sunset (it was the first evening of Daylight Savings Time).  I headed out promptly at 4:30pm only to realize that sunset wasn't for another two hours! I found some great streaks of clouds over Marblehead and then noticed three working boats painted red, white and blue in Marblehead Harbor.  From this vantage point on Riverhead Beach, I was able to line up the three boats with Abbot Hall under the light of the streaked clouds.

Summer Days at Castle Rock

With the gray, raw day that just passed, I was looking for a bright Summer view of Marblehead and found this image from mid-September.  I had received an ultra-wide angle on loan from Canon and was busy putting it through its paces when I decided to try a few compositions at Castle Rock. The lens was proving to be quite challenging in that every part of the frame needed to be used to produce a solid final image.  For this shot, I set up the camera on a tripod very close to the ocean's edge and waited for the moment [...]

A Shining Beacon – Marblehead Light

On December 20th, a solar storm held the promise of a display of the Northern Lights over Marblehead.  Remembering this spot from my last capture of the aurora borealis in June of last year, I headed to Cove Lane and hoped to capture a similar scene with the added bonus of lights streaming down Marblehead Light. Despite the forecasts for a strong storm, no green or purple hues showed in the end.  I did manage to capture a nice image of Marblehead Light displayed as a shining beacon in the night sky thanks to those lights that decorate it twice [...]

Perfect Spot for a Sunset

Last night, the sunset was due to take place at 6:48pm thanks to the magic of Daylight Savings Time and, after a quick check of the weather conditions, I thought it might turn into a good show.  With that thought in mind, I headed out with a few destinations in mind. I started off shooting along Riverhead Beach and started to become nervous as the clouds built up near the horizon.  I stayed in that spot until 6pm and then decided to head to a location I hadn't visited since the Summer - Corinthian Lane.  This might just be the [...]

Crooked Tree on Peach’s Point

I've been fascinated by this crooked tree on Peach's Point (or is it Peaches Point?) since moving to Marblehead in 2008.  The tree seems to be in such a precarious position along the ocean's edge and with only the thinnest of trunks to keep it upright. Meanwhile, the surrounding homes in this area of Marblehead are truly magnificent in stature and architecture thus serving to exaggerate further the oddity of this simple crooked tree. This image is another from the series captured last Wednesday and was taken only 15 minutes after yesterday's shot of the boat ramp.  The sun had [...]

The Boat Ramp in Barnegat

This was the first stop I made last Wednesday as a storm passed Marblehead and left behind incredible light.  I had seen this scene develop from the comforts of my home thanks to the First Harbor webcam and quickly jumped into my car and headed down to this area known to locals as Barnegat. At this point, the sky overhead was still grey and the best light could be seen close to the horizon and over Gerry Island with Marblehead Light in the distance.  I parked near Marblehead Lobster Company and explored a few compositions before deciding on this one. [...]

Fort Beach Sunset

On February 21st, I visited Fort Sewall to capture a full moon and ended up being treated to a nice Winter sunset.  I began shooting on the far end of Fort Sewall looking out toward Gerry Island and slowly made my way around as the sun set and the colors built up in the sky. As the light began to fade, I found this vantage point from atop Fort Sewall looking out over Fort Beach and the waning light of sunset.  This is one of the few spots where a lack of boats can be helpful to the scene.  In [...]

Grounded on Fisherman’s Beach

Here is another image from my wanderings on Wednesday, March 2nd.  I shared an image from my last stop - Castle Rock - yesterday.  This image was from the middle of my journey chasing some great light after a rainstorm. I had been shooting at Doliber Cove under cloudy skies when the light finally broke through and I manage to get a few shots I was pleased with.  Having done so, I walked back to the car which was parked across the street from this spot.  My eyes quickly snagged on the bright orange boat grounded on Fisherman's Beach and I [...]

Crashing Surf at Castle Rock

On Wednesday, March 2nd, a brief but strong rainstorm swept through Marblehead.  As it left, the sky began to clear and I noted some interesting low clouds skirting above the horizon.  Though I had been fighting a cold for a few days, I decided I had to get out of the house and see if I could find any nice compositions with the rapidly changing light. As tends to be the case, I couldn't stop at just one spot and so, between 11am and 12:15pm, I shot at Fountain Park, various spots along Little Harbor and Doliber Cove, before finishing [...]
