Marblehead – A Model New England Town

In late November 2014, as Abbot Hall tower was nearing the end of its much needed repairs, I was invited atop the scaffolding to help document the work that was taking place.  With a perfect vantage point from which to capture images of historic downtown and the harbor, I couldn't help but shoot the nearly endless compositions that presented themselves. For this shot, I decided to have a bit of fun with it and introduce a selective focus (much like one would get with a tilt-shift lens).  The result accentuates the effect of shooting from above and transforms Marblehead into [...]

Longing for Summer Sunsets

As the days get longer, one can't help longing for Summer sunsets over Marblehead harbor.  This incredible sunset filled with pinks and purples formed over a full harbor on July 21, 2013 and I was setup at the Pleon Yacht Club's pier for a perfect vantage point. This particular sunset seemed to go on forever (I have images starting to show brilliant pinks at 8:20 and finishing 11 minutes later).  I can't wait for a full harbor and warm days to recapture these moments in Marblehead.

Leaves Aglow in Doliber’s Cove

In 2014, I sent my older camera to be modified so that it could shoot infrared images.  The benefit of this is that foliage reflects infrared while a deep blue sky (and ocean) absorbs this wavelength of light.  Once the infrared images are converted to black and white, the result can be a dramatic image that is not possible to achieve with an unmodified camera. For a while, I was shooting more black and white and sharing those images quite regularly.  It was only when I dove into my archive that I found a collection of infrared black and white [...]

Days End at Marblehead Light

In mid-May of 2013, I headed to Chandler Hovey Park in hopes of capturing some nice color to marks the days end.  The clouds had built up during the day but a small clearing formed at the horizon just as the sun set. Almost as soon as I had put the car in park, I was out and getting my camera on the tripod to shoot the incredible sunset light that seemed to be exploding from the base of Marblehead Light and marking the days end (or is it day's end?). I shared a horizontal composition of this shot shortly after [...]

The Road Back to Town

The path between Gerry Island the main land is one of the most magical pieces of Marblehead - appearing twice a day like clockwork at low tide and disappearing without a trace as the tide rolls back in. I was out on Gerry Island hoping for a solid sunset backdrop for this image of the boats and houses along Doaks Lane.  While the sunset never materialized, I still really liked this image of the road back to town leading the eye toward the mainland. Have a great weekend!

Summer Sail through Marblehead Harbor

This image was captured two days before yesterday's shot and accompanying gallery.  I had been going out to shoot on a fairly regular basis (tomorrow's image was taken 4 days before this one) and had ended up on the Neck with a nice view of the Abbot Hall, St. Michael's steeple and Grace Community Church as the sun set. I took several shots as the sun set and lit the clouds from below but found those lacking dynamic element.  I then spotted a sailboat heading out of Marblehead Harbor for a Summer sail and timed this shot for when it [...]

The Great Tree and the Perfect Storm

This image is the perfect example of the archive that I have built up over these past six years.  On July 24th, a perfect rain cloud passed over Marblehead and I was fortunate to have the camera in my trunk as I drove back into town.  I chased the cloud and great light from 7:30 until 8:10pm capturing a rainbow, beautiful sunset and a variety of images of this rain cloud. Here, I sought to include the great tree at Fort Sewall with a view out towards Marblehead Harbor and the golden light reflecting off the rain cloud.  The small [...]

Moored in the Mouth of the Harbor

Today's image comes from June 21st and a trip across the causeway to this small beach at the end of Cove Lane.  This beach has become a favorite location to shoot Marblehead Light, oncoming or departing storms and, especially, the Aurora Borealis. On this day, I was searching for an image that would capture the warmth of the day.  The great Winter of 2015 was not yet a distant memory and any images of warmth were welcome.  With a lone sailboat moored in the mouth of the harbor and bathed in the golden light of the setting sun, I knew [...]

Purple Sunset and a Golden Weathervane

Though yesterday's snow started off with beautiful big flakes, the wind picked up too fast to allow for any good photo opportunities.  As we remain firmly in stick and mud season, I turned to my archive of images for this week's posts.  Though I have now shared over 1,400 images of Marblehead on this site, I still have over 650 in the 'to be posted' folder from outings that resulted in too many images to share... Today's shot comes from an incredible night at Crocker Park.  I had gone out to shoot the full moon and had just taken a [...]

The Pier at Parker Lane

So this image was taken 6 minutes before yesterday's of a harbor filled with boats.  As I mentioned yesterday, I had gone out to Parker Lane (one of the public ways) to shoot the Summer sunset and found some dramatic light before me. Prior to shooting the peak of sunset's color, I composed this image of a private pier under beautiful clouds.
