Gerry and Brown’s Islands under a Cloud Filled Sky

As the unofficial last week of Summer comes to a close (school starts next week!!!), I wanted to share an image that might transport you to a warm and happy place.  This image of Gerry and Brown's Islands was taken on Wednesday, August 5th at 2pm.  While I tend to shoot in the early morning hours or much later in the day, I decided to head out when I spotted cumulous clouds in the sky for just this type of image. Shooting in mid-day can be harder with harsh light and no shadows but, with the right amount of clouds [...]

Boats in the Harbor

On Tuesday, August 4th, I headed out at sunset with the hope of nice clouds and good color.  As I drove across the causeway, I thought the clouds offered the best photo opportunity from Parker Lane - one of the public ways on Marblehead Neck.  I pulled in and found the tide to be quite low as I descended to the small beach. For the first time, I noted that there was a rock formation at the water's edge that would allow me a closer view of the boats filling Marblehead harbor at this time of year.  I carefully climbed [...]

Watching the Moon Rise

I've already shared one image of the blue moon rising on July 31st but this one might be my favorite from that night.  I explained previously that my camera and all lenses were at Canon for their biyearly checkup and cleaning.  In their place, I was fortunate to borrow a camera and zoom lens from a friend.  The zoom she lent me allowed twice the magnification of my longest lens and the camera added an extra 1.6 time reach to do its smaller sensor.  The end result was an effective 640mm of zoom (vs the 200mm I usually use). When [...]

Jumping for Rainbows

On Monday, July 27, a storm cloud passed over Marblehead a little after 6pm.  Given the timing of the rain and the direction it was headed, I figured there was a pretty good chance for capturing a rainbow over Marblehead Harbor.  I quickly decided on Crocker Park as my destination and packed up the car. Once I reached Crocker Park, I headed across to the railing overlooking the harbor and saw the rainbow illuminated directly over Marblehead Neck.  I also spotted a few kids down at the float and headed down the walkway with this image in mind.  The tide [...]

Old North Church and the Harbor

A few weeks ago, I was scrolling through my Facebook news feed and happened upon a puzzle being sold on a local group page with a cartoonish drawing of Old North Church situated above the houses on Doaks Lane with a section of Little Harbor below.  The composition was one I did not believe existed in real life but, at the first opportunity of a low tide, I decided to see just how close I could get. I headed out to Gerry Island on August 17 at sunset and walked along the sandbar that appears with each low tide.  Once [...]

The Lightning Show at Castle Rock

To finish off this 'lightning week', here is an image from August 4th captured from Castle Rock.  I was in the midst of a hiatus from sharing images of Marblehead and had been rediscovering the joy of capturing the beauty of this town.  On this night, I was fortunate to capture a beautiful sunset as well as a lightning storm.  I'll share the sunset photo on another day... This image is actually a composite including the five bolts you see from five different (sequential) exposures to make up the final lightning show.  I'll leave it to you to decide if the [...]

Preston Beach Lightning – Forked Bolt over the Ocean

While not the brightest bolt of lightning captured on this Saturday night at Preston Beach, I really liked the appearance of the forked bolt and its reflection in the wet sand.  At this point in the evening (this was taken between Monday and Tuesday's captures), the sky took on a more dramatic and menacing appearance which added an extra dimension to the scene.

Preston Beach Lightning – Cluster of Bolts Ends the Show

After capturing images from Preston Beach, I rechecked the radar on my iPhone and saw an approaching rain storm was nearly upon us.  I quickly moved up to the top of the rock wall and positioned myself behind the old anchor for the last few shots. As the light had faded, I was able to leave the shutter open for much longer exposures and greatly increase my chance of capturing bolts of lightning.  During this exposure, I managed to capture a cluster of bolts situated in the same location and placed perfectly in relation to the old anchor.

Preston Beach Lightning – Near Miss at Ram Island

Continuing with 'lightning week' on Wednesdays in Marblehead - here is an image of the opposite viewpoint as yesterday's capture of twin lightning bolts.  This image was taken 40 minutes after yesterday's as the storm moved across the horizon. The position of the lightning bolt makes it appear as if it just missed striking Ram Island.

Preston Beach Lightning – Twin Bolts at Sunset

On Saturday night, a lightning storm took shape over Boston at 6:30pm.  I decided to head down to Preston Beach in the hopes of capturing some of the lightning bolts from a safe distance.  The storm ended up being a very active one and, despite many, many missed shots, I came home with a handful of images of lightning striking over the Atlantic Ocean. In this image, you can see twin bolts at sunset.  This was only a 0.4 second exposure which meant luck was firmly on my side in capturing the twin bolts.  You can just make out the [...]
