Turn to Clear Vision

Another image from my weekend chase of the supermoon rising and setting over Marblehead.  With the superzoom on my camera to help me get a close up view of the moon, I tried to find new items to explore at Chandler Hovey Park.  One that immediately came to mind with the binocular aimed toward Abbot Hall and Marblehead harbor. With the zoom extended out to about 300mm and using a wide open aperture, I was able to isolate objects and push much of the background to a subtle blur.  I composed this image to include the binoculars as well as [...]

Brilliant Sunrise over Cormorant Rock

On August 29, I headed to Chandler Hovey Park before dawn in order to capture the supermoon setting over Abbot Hall.  As it happened, the moon set 30 minutes before sunrise and so I had plenty of time to explore other scenes in the dawn light.  I took a few pictures of Marblehead Bell and Cormorant Rock as the light of the rising sun filled the sky with shades of orange and red. I had actually turned back towards town when the sun finally rose and only noticed it by the strong reflection of light coming off the houses across [...]

Rays of Light over Marblehead Harbor

Today's image was taken on Tuesday, August 18 from the pier at the Pleon Yacht Club.  I had set up early for sunset figuring the clouds in the sky might offer a decent show.  As it happened, the clouds served to create these beautiful rays of light while the sun was still fairly high above the horizon. The clouds then thickened as the sun descended and caused the sunset to fizzle out.  I saw the lackluster show developing and so I packed up my camera and tripod and headed to the car.  It was then that I noticed the Eastern [...]

Firing the Sunset Cannon

This is the third variation of the sunset cannon being fired at the Eastern Yacht Club that I've shared on this site.  The first was a part of a collection that made its way into my book exploring how each of the yacht clubs celebrates this unique Marblehead tradition.  The second explored the view of the sunset cannon being fired with Marblehead Light in the background.  On this date, I had gone out to shoot the sunset and ended up at the Pleon Yacht Club.  As the sunset petered out, I made my way a bit early to the car [...]

Purple Sky over Castle Rock

I mentioned in Tuesday's post that I had taken a number of images on August 4th - this is one that I almost missed!  I was set up for sunset at Parker Lane happily shooting boats in Marblehead harbor perched on a rock when I started to wonder if the sunset might fizzle out.  The sky before me was looking less impressive and I happened to look back to compare when I spotted a growing mass of purple sky overhead.  I quickly hopped off the rock and raced to my car with an immediate thought of heading to Castle Rock. [...]

Supermoon Setting over Marblehead Harbor

What a weekend! I chased the moon quite literally from moonrise to moonset starting on Friday night and ending on Sunday morning.  The sturgeon moon (as August's full moon is called) was also labeled as a supermoon for being 8% larger than a regular full moon.  With that in mind, I again borrowed a super zoom in the hopes of replicating one of my all time favorite images - the supermoon setting over Abbot Hall taken in March 2011. On this occasion, the moon set proved much trickier with Saturday's descent occurring 30 minutes before sunrise and Sunday's taking place [...]

Rocky Shore of Marblehead Neck

On Wednesday, July 22nd, I had left the house in the hope of a decent sunset and ended up on the beach off Corinthian Lane.  I had checked the tides before making my way and the mid-tide made this area of Marblehead Neck abutting the harbor a nice spot from which to explore multiple compositions. As I wandered down the shore, I noted a rock formation I hadn't previously explored.  As the sun set, I composed an image to focus on the rocky shore (made of granite?) and include the view of Marblehead harbor filled with boats and the familiar [...]

Light at the End of the Rainbow

This is the fifth image shared from an outing on Tuesday, August 4th.  I've already shared images of lightning and a sunset shot of boats in Marblehead harbor and have another image coming up on Thursday as well.  It's no wonder that the site grew quickly from a weekly post to daily ones... On this day, storms kept passing through Marblehead including one at 4:30pm.  With the intensity of rain and clearing skies behind it, I thought there might be a chance for a rainbow (though the sun wasn't quite low enough in the sky yet).  I quickly got in [...]

Full Moon rising over Ram Island

My family and I were out at Preston Beach with friends tonight enjoying one of the last few days of Summer.  I had checked the position of the coming Sturgeon moon ahead of time and knew that it would rise over Ram Island.  The only potential issue I foresaw were the building clouds and deepening haze at the horizon that I worried might obstruct early views of the full moon. As it happened, the haze did stick around past sunset and I had to wait until the full moon had risen well over Ram Island before capturing it as you [...]

Dawn at Marblehead Rock

I woke up this morning with a few shots in mind using a lens borrowed from a friend and headed to Chandler Hovey Park to see if any of them would work out.  Shooting Marblehead Rock wasn't on my initial idea list but, when I saw the red color of dawn paint the sky, I knew the familiar shape of Marblehead rock would make for a nice silhouette. Enjoy the weekend!
