Marblehead at the End of the Rainbow

As I mentioned in yesterday's post, as my family and I drove into Marblehead on this Friday night, we witnessed an incredibly vibrant rainbow from our vantage point on Lafayette Street.  I quickly got out of the car and grabbed the camera and tripod I had thankfully stowed in the trunk earlier that day.  With the rainbow so clearly formed, it appeared as they it had one end firmly in Marblehead (and, specifically, the Cliffs area). I especially liked the golden light that can be seen 'within' the rainbow produced by the golden light of the sun lowering to the horizon. [...]

The Storm Cloud

On Friday, July 24th, my family and I were driving back into Marblehead from dinner in Beverly where we had barely escaped heavy rains.  As we drove down Lafayette Street, I spotted an enormous rainbow taking shape over Salem Harbor and received permission to pull over and capture it (I had luckily put the camera bag and tripod in the trunk just in case).  With sunset fast approaching and fearing little time to capture any other great clouds over Marblehead Harbor, I convinced my wife and kids to join me on a quick photo shoot. When I turned onto Front [...]

Five Years of Wednesdays in Marblehead

On August 14, 2010, I created Wednesdays in Marblehead and posted my first image of the Marblehead fireworks taken just one month prior.  As a newcomer to town (we moved here in May 2008), I decided that the best way for me to learn about my new hometown was to photograph it.  I had a simple plan to shoot when I could and share an image once per week on Wednesdays (my day off from my regular job). What I failed to realize or consider at the time was just how much beauty there was to find within the 4.4 square [...]

Purple Bolt of Lightning over Marblehead Harbor

On August 4th, a procession of thunder storms developed around Marblehead.  I had headed out to Chandler Hovey park for the first one and found incredible light that kept me busy but was disappointed by the few bolts of lightning.  When the winds shifted threatening to bring the storm closer to Marblehead, I ducked into the car and pulled up the radar.  I saw an even bigger storm with purple dots mixed in with the deep red core and thought I would have another chance to catch a bolt of lightning over Marblehead Harbor. I set up at the base [...]

Once in a Blue Moon

On July 23rd, I decided to go on hiatus.  This was largely driven by my feeling that I was going out to shoot the same scenes driven in part by the positive response I was getting on social media.  I felt that I was no longer shooting for myself and started feeling less excited about going out and less satisfied with the images I was capturing. In the past week, I have continued to go out to shoot but found the excitement has come roaring back (to the detriment of my family whom I forced to join me on one [...]

On Hiatus

Wednesdays in Marblehead will be going on hiatus for the next few weeks.  I will not be posting to the website or Facebook as I take time to renew the creative drive that led me to start this exploration of the beauty to be found in the town of Marblehead. The five year anniversary of Wednesdays in Marblehead is coming up on August 14 and I hope to have new material to share by then. I will continue to fulfill print orders as well as those for books and the 16-month 2016 Calendar. See you soon...

Light Up the Trees

So as luck would have it, this image was waiting in line next to yesterday's image of the lifeguard chair on an empty beach.  I went back to view all images taken on this day and remembered there was a "smoky sou'wester" that explained this phenomenon.  I had never heard the term until a gentleman floating in the waters of Doliber Cove shared it with me. Anyway, this image of a flag planted near a small grave marker at Old Burial Hill came from a walk around Marblehead exploring the foggy conditions.  The angle of the sun and fog served [...]

Lifeguard Chair on an Empty Beach

I was searching in the archives for an image to share and found this one of a lifeguard chair on an empty Devereux beach that I thought fit with the current heatwave making it finally feel like Summer.  Then I looked at the date this photo was taken - July 21, 2014 (exactly one year ago) - and that clinched it. I don't remember the fog that descended on Marblehead last Summer but the view of a lone lifeguard chair and a beach seeming to go on forever into the foggy mist was one that I thought others might enjoy.

Picture Perfect Sunset from Crocker Park

I found myself at Crocker Park for sunset on both July 1st and 2nd with camera in hand in large part to capture the Marblehead Festival of Arts activities.  As luck would have it, both nights featured incredible sunsets - the first with a dramatic purple sky and this one with a picture perfect sunset. I hadn't intended on shooting the sunset on this night and hadn't brought my tripod.  Instead I was planning on shooting the kids enjoying the show being put on as part of the 50th Festival of Arts.  That plan went out the window when I [...]
