Summer in Marblehead – 2 – Sunset over the Water

I mentioned in yesterday's post that I had gone out on Saturday night to capture the sunset which proceeded to explode in color well after the sun had dipped below the horizon.  This image comes from my first location at the Pleon Yacht Club and just as the sun set. I had gone down to the float to capture the diffused sunlight as it reflected off the water in Marblehead harbor.  With boats filling the harbor and beautiful light, this seemed to be yet another perfect depiction of Summer in Marblehead. * I normally would have cloned out the contrail [...]

Summer in Marblehead – 1 – A Real Corker

On Saturday, June 28, I headed out at a little after 6:30pm in hopes of capturing my first solid Summer sunset.  I had gone out on a few occasions over the past few weeks but was disappointed in the lack of strong color in the sky that seems to accompany Summer in Marblehead. I started off shooting at the Pleon Yacht Club and continued to do so until the sun set.  Seeing the cloud formation gave me an idea for a better vantage point and I drove down to Parker Lane to continue capturing the show.  Within minutes of arriving, [...]

Heron at Sunset at Wyman Cove

I mentioned in yesterday's post that I had only learned about Wyman Cove recently and had decided to make my way there on Tuesday, June 17 at sunset to see what compositions might result.  As I reached the end of the path leading to Wyman Cove, I stood and took in this scene before me.  The grass formed a great frame for the scene with private piers poking out to the right.  A wooded section of Salem can be seen beyond the water and the light was reflecting beautifully off the still waters in Salem harbor. I had to wait [...]

The Road to Wyman Cove

On Tuesday, June 17, I headed out of the house at 7:30pm to chase after some promising clouds and hoped for a solid sunset.  I knew that I wanted to shoot looking out toward Salem Harbor as I hadn't been on that side of Marblehead for a sunset since my outing at Rockett Landing a few weeks earlier.  I also had been told about an area called Wyman Cove that I had never seen on a map and thus had never thought to look for previously. I made my way along the road to Wyman Cove and all the way [...]

Sundog over Marblehead Harbor

On Sunday, June 8, I had headed out to Chandler Hovey Park before sunset to see if I could find some new compositions on that familiar ground.  As I arrived, I spotted a sundog to the left of the setting sun and quickly tried to find a good way to capture the usually fleeting rainbow-like effect. Normally, I would have composed an image to include the full expanse of Marblehead Harbor but with Abbot Hall's current red drape and scaffolding, I decided to look for a new way to showcase the sundog over Marblehead Harbor. I ended up liking this [...]

Dinghy Under the Moon at Sunset

This seemed like a perfect image to start off what is supposed to be a beautiful, warm, Summer weekend.  The image comes from the evening of June 2nd and a trip to the Rockett Landing off Village Street.  I shared a photo captured from the top of the pier earlier but had taken this one shortly before walking back up to the road. I was struck by the light first and foremost and decided on a vertical orientation so that the crescent moon could be included in the final frame with the dinghy tied up for the night.

From the Rooftops – Over the Causeway and Through the Woods

On Wednesday, June 17, I was invited to a home with a widow's walk located on Marblehead Neck.  I was thrilled for the opportunity to reignite the dormant 'From the Rooftops' series that typically appears on Thursday.  Since my last outing at the Jeremiah Lee Mansion, the opportunities seemed to have dried up. I drove over the causeway and marveled at the clouds forming on what would end up being a near-90 degree day.  I was welcomed into the home and we made our way to the rooftop widow's walk. The view was incredible and the breeze refreshing (did I [...]

Watching the Sunset at the OPCL

I headed out last night in hopes of a repeat of the previous night's spectacular sunset (which I wasn't able to photograph) and decided to try out two new spots from which I had yet to capture any images over these past six years. I started off at Wyman Cove and then headed off to Overlook Road.  I had planned to end up along the road at the water's edge of Waterside Cemetery but misjudged and ended up on Overlook Road.  There I found a beautiful pier belonging to the OPCL (Ocean Park Civic League) and asked some of the [...]

Abbot Tower and a Full Harbor

Today's image comes from July 16, 2013 and a boat trip in and around Marblehead Harbor. We made it into the harbor during sunset and I proceeded to compose and capture shot after shot.  I couldn't pass up the unique vantage points from water level looking past boats in their mooring toward Abbot Tower standing tall in the distance. With the tower currently shrouded by scaffolding and a red curtain, I thought it would be a good opportunity to revisit some of these images from the archives.  Enjoy.

Seeing Marblehead in a New Light

One of my overriding goals and principles for Wednesdays in Marblehead has been to capture aspects of the town in such a way as to shed new light on them.  When I showed the mockup of my book to Bette Hunt, she gave me the nicest compliment by having just that reaction - seeing this town of hers in a new light (and I even stumped her on one image location). Five years later, I found that there were certain spots that escaped my ability to capture them properly.  During the Winter as I worked on the book and was [...]
