Heading Out to Fish in Marblehead

There seem to be two types of people that are fortunate to regularly witness the beauty of a Marblehead dawn and sunrise - photographers and fishermen.  There have been numerous times when I have been out shooting and spotted a fisherman boarding his boat ready to set course for an early catch. This image comes from Saturday, August 3rd when I woke at 4:45am for no good reason and decided to take advantage of the situation rather than trying to get back to sleep.  I managed a few shots near the water before this boat started up with its crew [...]

J105s, Abbot Hall and a Great Summer Sunset

This image comes from a boat ride in and around Marblehead Harbor taken on July 16th.  We had incredible light and my friend was more than happy to chase that light with me as we cruised the waters surrounding this incredible town and eventually found our way into Marblehead Harbor. For anyone who hasn't taken a boat into our harbor, it is an obstacle course of incredible boats of many shapes, sizes and styles.  As we approached Abbot Hall, I spotted these J105s and quickly grabbed this image.  Between the boats sharing the same style, the great clouds reflecting early [...]

Summer Sunset at Devereux Beach

This Summer has offered one incredible sunset after another.  This image from July 15th came about when I was out in search of long exposure images at Devereux Beach [LINK to that image].  Before getting to work on the image I had in mind, I had to stop and compose a few images to capture the beauty of soft sunset light with wispy clouds hanging over a calm ocean.  I love the reflected light off the clouds here and the soft white surf as the water hit the sand.  Couldn't ask for a calmer or more beautiful scene than this [...]

An Incredible Dawn from Crocker Park

On Saturday, August 3rd, I woke at 4:45am for no good reason.  My first instinct was to grab the iPhone and figure out cloud cover, sunrise time and location before even considering going back to bed.  The conditions seemed decent so I quickly changed and headed out of the house.  I made a pit stop at Dunkin Donuts as the sky started to brighten and then made a beeline for Crocker Park as the sky started to build with color. I parked on Water Street and snuck some quick shots from the water before running to the top of the [...]

Good Speed and the Corinthian Yacht Club

Here is another image from the boat tour around Marblehead that took place on July 16th.  By now we had made our way into Marblehead harbor and the light was really picking up.  As we motored past the Corinthian yacht club, I spied this sailboat coming up.  I decided to frame the shot so that the boat would show up in the bottom third of the frame and had to fire off a number of shots and hope that I got the shot as I had wanted.  It turns out that it is much harder to shoot on a moving [...]

What Lies Beneath – Fish at Redd’s Pond

On July 5th, my son and I arrived a bit early at Redd's Pond in anticipation of the annual Marblehead Festival of Arts model boat regatta.  The waters were calm and the deep blue skies were punctuated by the occasional white cloud.  As the sun disappeared behind one cloud, the reflections on the water at Redd's Pond gave way and fish appeared beneath the surface.  I have seen people fishing at Redd's Pond before but never actually saw a school of fish beneath the surface of the water before. I had forgotten my circular polarizer on this day so I [...]

Sunset View from the Water – Marblehead Lighthouse and Harbor

On July 16, a friend took me out on his boat for a two hour excursion around the waters of Marblehead.  I have only shared one image from that trip thus far (there are 15 more after today's post left to go).  For today's image, I decided to follow up on yesterday's calm reflected sunset view with this brighter and bolder view of a sunset from the water. We had made our way around Naugus Head and Fluen Point and then crossed over to explore the back of Tinkers before heading out to Bakers Island.  As we made our way [...]

Summer Rainbow over Marblehead Harbor

On Monday, July 29th, I drove home from work in the sunniest rainstorm I can remember.  The whole way (all 3 miles of it), I wondered if 5:30pm was too early for a proper rainbow to form.  As I dipped down Lafayette street and made my way toward the Welcome to Marblehead sign, I got my answer in the form of a bright sharp rainbow over Salem harbor. With that, I called ahead and pleaded with my wife for a quick photo shoot.  I had just enough time to grab my camera and head toward Marblehead Harbor.  I tried to [...]

The Iconic Beauty of Abbot Hall

One thing I have discovered over the past three years of sharing images of the Town of Marblehead is that there is incredible beauty to be found almost everywhere you look.  The downside to that beauty is that I tend to come away with a number of good images from each outing and the photos keep piling up.  As of this post, I have shared 715 images but I have 332 processed and just waiting to see the light of day.  Because of this, I have been posting on a daily basis (well, Monday through Friday) for almost two years [...]

The Marker at Fifteen-Foot Rock

Another image from Wednesday's impromptu outing to capture the action of  Marblehead Junior Race Week.  As we made our way around the race course, I spotted this marker in bright red and green and the intriguing letters FR.  We came around and I was just able to include the great clouds above and enough water below to offer a reflection.  I later found out the FR stands for Fifteen-Foot Rock.  Hopefully many of you will pass this marker this weekend as you head out to sea from Marblehead Harbor.
