Summer Sunset from Corinthian Lane

I missed a great Summer sunset on Thursday and decided to make up for it with a photoshoot on Friday.  I headed out at 7pm and made my way to Devereux Beach to scout out the skies.  Unfortunately, there was nothing but boring blue looking out over the harbor with more interesting clouds back towards Greystone and Goldthwait.  Having recently shot sunsets from Devereux Beach, I decided to drive out to Marblehead Neck and see if I could find some new vantage points. After circling around the parking lot at Chandler Hovey Park, I drove back down Kimball Street and [...]

Once in a Blue Moon

I headed out last night in hopes of capturing a nice full moon rising over Marblehead harbor.  I had tried to decide where to shoot from and ended up at Lovis Cove with a borrowed super telephoto lens on a cloudless night.  While the sunset was nothing to write home about, the moon rise more than made up for it.  It took a little while for the full Sturgeon moon to make its way past the haze but, once it did, it made for quite a sight. As I stood there shooting with traffic from The Barnacle coming out to [...]

A Perfect Spring Day in Marblehead

I mentioned on Friday that the two flowers I strive to photograph each year are sunflowers and cherry blossoms.  Since living in Washington, DC and being spoiled by the view of cherry blossoms lining the tidal basin there, these flowers have become synonymous with the start of Spring. This year, I happened upon the most incredible display of cherry blossoms since moving to Marblehead five years ago.  I discovered this crop of trees in the midst of the Harris Street Cemetery one day and ended up coming back to shoot for three days in a row in early morning and, [...]

Morning Comes to Crocker Park

I've shared a few images from this dawn photoshoot that took place in the first week of August.  As I mentioned, the light changed so dramatically in the hour before sunrise (the so-called blue hour) that I ended up with 9 favorites from the session. This image came about after another taken at Crocker Park focusing on the harbor filled with boats.  I decided to step back and try to find a composition including the great trees that stand near the flag pole while keeping the harbor and lighthouse in strong positions in the frame.  This spot seemed perfect and [...]

Half-Opened Sunflower

Anyone who has followed this site for a while might have heard me state that I am not a flower photographer.  The exceptions to that rule are cherry blossoms which will always signal the start of Spring to me and the sunflower which is tied to the warmth of Summer. Last year, I found a particular patch of sunflowers with great petals and details.  I inquired about obtaining some seeds from their owner and received a gift of seedlings and seeds earlier in the Summer.  My daughter and I went to work one afternoon carefully planting the seedlings and scattering [...]

Dawn of a New Year of Wednesdays in Marblehead

Yesterday, I shared a frenetic slideshow showcasing every one of the 726 images shared in the first three years of Wednesdays in Marblehead.  I was trying to decide how best to start Year 4 and went through the archive until I found this image from mid-January of a beautiful dawn captured from Front Street. This was one of many failed attempts to capture sea smoke over the last Winter but, on this particular morning, I was rewarded for my efforts with great clouds above the horizon that encircled Marblehead Neck as well as wispy clouds higher up in the sky [...]

Three Great Years of Wednesdays in Marblehead

On August 14, 2010, I shared my first image of Marblehead and created the Wednesdays in Marblehead website.  I had envisioned sharing images once weekly but, after less than a year, was sharing them daily (guess I should have called it the Daily Marblehead...). I was trying to decide how best to capture the incredible road that this project has taken and settled on a slideshow retrospective.  Below you will see every single image shared on the Wednesdays in Marblehead site over the past three years - all 726 of them.  This easily could have been a 30 minute slideshow [...]

Marblehead at the End of the Rainbow

Anyone remember that incredible rainbow that shone on June 17th?  If not, click here to see the full double rainbow over Ram's island LINK. After capturing the full rainbow, I recomposed looking for other unique scenes with the bright rainbow only partially in the frame.  This image of the house at the end of a cliff with the brightest part of the double rainbow caught my eye but has been waiting in the 'to be posted' queue for almost two months now.  Here it is now to mark the end of my third year posting photos on Wednesdays in Marblehead. Come [...]

Dawn Breaks Over Marblehead Harbor

Back to the sunrise of August 3rd to start this week off right.  As I mentioned previously, I woke at 4:45am on this particular Saturday and decided to take advantage of that by heading down to the Crocker Park area to shoot the dawn as it broke over Marblehead Harbor.  Before heading up there, I ran down to the water's edge and captured these incredible colors in the sky and reflecting in the waters of Marblehead harbor.  I love seeing the harbor filled to capacity with boats and the calm waters on this early August morning helped keep them sharp [...]

The Sun, Marblehead, and the American Flag

On Tuesday, July 30th, we headed out on the Hannah Glover to Children's Island where my son was spending two weeks at camp.  This was the session's Family Night and I made sure to bring my camera for the ride there and back.  It seems that I am always greeted with great clouds on the few occasions when we head over to Children's Island and this time was no different. As we made our way out of Marblehead Harbor, I noted the American Flag on the back of the Hannah Glover and tried to include it with compositions of Abbot [...]
