Keep it Local – Scribe and Hip Baby Gear

With the lack of snow this Winter, I decided to head to Old Town and capture more images for my Keep it Local series.  I had gotten an image of Hip Baby gear earlier but was trying to find a good angle with which to capture Scribe next door.  I finally took a few steps back and found this composition showcasing the intersection with its flashing yellow light and the old buildings that house these relatively new businesses.  It was a nice juxtaposition of the old and new seen in the early light on these uncrowded streets. And if you [...]

From the Rooftops – Leggs Hill Road

This image was taken in the first week of November when I noted the nice light of sunset and made my way to the back parking lot of the YMCA and tried to find a vantage point unobstructed by trees.  I had taken a similar shot almost exactly one year earlier facing towards Salem but that view was obstructed due to tree growth.  I chose this view to approximate my rooftop ones and show the houses around Leggs Hill Road.

Morning Comes to Little Harbor

In early December, I ventured out at sunrise to explore the light and various spots in town.  As I drove through Old Town, I found myself at the small launch near the Marblehead Lobster Company off Orne Street.  The tide was at the perfect point to make for these tiny waves along the launch area and the water was calm enough to reflect the morning light.  Not a bad way to start the day...

Long Exposure – Doaks Lane Sunset

Welcome to Long Exposure Tuesday!  As I've explored the town of Marblehead, I have found that limiting myself to shooting within the confines of 4.5 square miles has ignited my creativity.  This began with Rooftop Thursdays and now continues with Long Exposure Tuesdays.  In long exposure photography, the shutter is left open for seconds or minutes rather than the 1/100th of  a second in a typical daytime photo.  This has the effect of smoothing out water, turning waves into mist and making the clouds into streaks of light.  I have been working on this technique for the past few months [...]

The Worm Moon rises over Old Burial Hill

The Worm Moon rose on March 7th and I was determined to find a new vantage point from which to shoot it.  I had planned on capturing its rise over the house at Redds pond but, as the minutes ticked by and the moon failed to appear, I walked around the pond and eventually up to Old Burial Hill.  There I spotted this scene of a full moon rising over gravestones dating back hundreds of years and decided this was the image I should capture.

Keep it Local – Georgie Living

Georgie Living is the retail home for Georgina Ryan, an interior designer, and offers 'casual elegance with award winning design and personal attention'.  On this particular morning, I was exploring Washington Street's stores before daylight savings and the end of the parking ban colluded to keep me from shooting these beautiful empty streets.  I tried a few angles to get in the building that houses Georgie Living and Scuppers next door but wasn't happy with any of the compositions.  When I got closer and noticed how neatly Old Town House and Abbot Hall lined up in the background, I knew [...]

From the Rooftops – Down to the Harbor

Here is another view from the apartment with a balcony on Washington Street.  As I mentioned once before, this was the place that started the Rooftop series...though I didn't realize it at the time.  I remember walking down Summer street one day and seeing this rooftop deck in front of me.  It took more than six months before I ended up there with a camera in hand and the view did not disappoint.  My 'Peeling Paint' photo is one of the rooftop series that are on display this month at the Hooper mansion.  Opening reception is this Sunday from 2-4pm.

Stacked Houses and Abbot Hall at Christmas

On December 24th, I found myself at Crocker Park awaiting the sunset and the lighting of the lighthouse's decorative lights.  As I looked back toward Abbot Hall, I noted the familiar scene of houses seemingly stacked on each other with Abbot overlooking them all.  The scene was made unique by the lit Christmas tree in that first home and I set about getting this image between shots of pink clouds and the harbor's last boats under a pinkish/purple sky.

The Lafayette House on Hooper Street

Continuing with yesterday's house architecture theme, here is one of the most famous houses in Marblehead - the Lafayette House.  You'll notice the corner that has been 'cut out' of the house.  Surprisingly, the real reason for this missing piece is not known.  Theories include: 1. During a visit to Marblehead in 1824, General Lafayette's carriage could not navigate this turn and the corner was therefore removed. 2. The corner had been removed as part of an entrance for a retail shop. 3. The corner was removed due to the flow of water/sewage. 4. Coal wagons could not pass thus necessitating this [...]

On the Corner of Front and Darling Streets

I was walking down Darling Street on this late November day when I noticed the red house on the corner.  The angle that Front and Darling Streets make at their intersection is quite strong and this house had a triangular corner to make the most of that meeting point.  I positioned myself to highlight the sharp angle and considered myself lucky to have the street devoid of parked cars.  This was a particularly early sunset and, at just after 3pm, the light was already starting to get that warm glow which you see reflected in some of the windows.  There [...]
