Old North Church and the Christmas Tree

This will be my last new image of 2019 as I plan to do a Top 10 countdown starting this weekend leading up to New Years Day. Today's photo of a lit Christmas tree on the rocky shore of Marblehead Harbor was captured ten minutes prior to the wider image of the moon setting. I had spotted this tree from across the harbor and really liked this composition but the cloudless sky detracted quite a bit. As the sun began to rise, it lit up the smoke from a chimney in downtown Marblehead and added a nice pink break in [...]

Cold Moon over State Street

Yesterday offered picture perfect conditions in Marblehead with about an inch of snow sticking to every branch and partly cloudy skies. It was a perfect day to explore Marblehead on a Wednesday and yet, I had to work (covering for a colleague). I actually drove home from my Salem office at lunch to grab my camera in the hopes of catching the moonrise but arrived at my chosen spot too late for the shot I had in mind. As a trade off for having to cover Wednesday, I had today free and so I got up a bit early and [...]

A Fresh Start – Cancelling Kickstarter and Refocusing on Photography

Crocker Park at dawn turns out to be a great time to think and ponder a fresh start to this Wednesdays in Marblehead project... When I first started exploring my new home town through landscape photography, I did it for myself. It was a way to exercise the creative part of my brain and challenge myself to capture the beauty I found in the more scenic locations around town as well as the hidden ones. Along the way, I found great joy when my images resonated with others. That joy grew when I was able to put together a book [...]

Kickstart the Day

My Kickstarter campaign to help fund my next book is now LIVE! - https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/marblehead/wednesdays-in-marblehead-seasons-of-change (Instagram - link in profile) With an early snow storm predicted to begin later today, I thought we might luck out with a nice sunrise to kickstart the day. With today being the launch day of my Kickstarter campaign, I had no trouble getting up early and making my way down to little harbor.  I was rewarded for my early outing in the 20 degree temperatures with some great colors at dawn. I remained there capturing more shots as the clouds shifted and the light changed [...]

Thankful for a Thanksgiving Sunset

What a great Thanksgiving this was - started with a Friendsgiving brunch, then a come-from-behind win for the Marblehead Magicians and a pre-dinner Thanksgiving sunset! I had spotted sunlight streaming across the street as I worked on my upcoming Kickstarter campaign and then pulled up some webcams around town to find a very promising set of clouds. With that (and an hour before dinner), I headed out and towards Riverhead Beach. I started shooting from near the water before heading back up to the causeway and capturing the vibrant pink sky over the Neck. I lucked out with little traffic [...]

A New Book is Coming – Kickstarter Dec 1 and Upcoming Plans

With the leaves having turned and fallen, we are entering 'stick season' which leaves much to be desired as far as photography is concerned. With that in mind, I thought the timing was perfect to hunker down and work on my second book. The image above/below is the initial idea for a cover.  I plan to work on the book for the month of November and launch a Kickstarter campaign on December 1st to raise capital for the printing costs.  As such, this page will be fairly quiet as far as new content for the month.  I'll share much more [...]

Ghost Ship in Marblehead

Last year, the Saltsmans brought Marblehead a living dragon for Halloween. This year, the ghost ship Oceanna has arrived at their home to awe and delight everyone walking down Pleasant street tonight. I spotted the early build of this ghost ship last week as I headed to Crosby's and then began seeing images of it on Facebook. I kept watching the weather and hoping for foggy conditions with which the ship would undoubtedly come to life but rain kept showing up instead of fog. I decided to head down Pleasant Street on Wednesday morning and capture the incredible workmanship that [...]

Playing in the Grass at Goldthwait

Shortly after my stop at Gatchell Park, I drove down to Goldthwait Reservation. I had checked the tides before leaving the house and knew the area would be filled with high tide water. I figured between the high water and the clouds overhead, I might have a nice grand view of the area from the rocks above at Devereux Beach. I parked in the lot and then headed up the walkway and tried a few shots taking in the full view of Goldthwait but none of them really 'worked'. I then had a thought and made my way carefully down [...]

Clem Rodgers Field and a Murder Mystery in Marblehead

Who knew that an innocent foliage shot could turn into a long read of a Marblehead murder mystery? On Saturday, I was driving around Marblehead trying to capture images of foliage before 2 inches of rain fell and washed all the color away. I had started at Forest River park and then found myself at the light in front of Gatchell Park and figured I would turn into the lot to explore. I photographed one tree with tackle dummies underneath and then found this scene of a small baseball diamond backed by foliage under a perfect sky. I decided to [...]
