Rounding the Corner at the CYC

I mentioned in yesterday's post that my family was lucky to have been invited out for an evening cruise around Marblehead harbor by good friends. After making our way down the 'main' side, we turned and headed back up along the Neck. As we were rounding the corner at the CYC, I spotted this composition and instantly snapped the shutter. I had been eyeing the view of Marblehead Light in close proximity to the Corinthian Yacht Club but the expanse of empty water left the scene feeling a bit empty. As we passed this boat on its mooring, everything about [...]

Fueling Up at the Landing

A little bit before publishing my Wednesdays in Marblehead book, I had started a series entitled 'From the Water' with photos captured from aboard friends' boats. On Friday night, we were invited onto a couple's boat (thanks Mike and Polly!) for a sunset cruise around and inside Marblehead harbor. We lucked out with calm waters and some decent light and I was like a kid in a candy store as we turned the corner at Fort Sewall. I shot over a hundred images as we slowly made our way down one side of the harbor and then back up along [...]

Summer Nights at Crocker Park

Our kids leave for overnight camp in the morning so, after dinner, I decided to pack everyone (including the dog) into the car and head over to Coffey Ice Cream for a couple of scoops. As we ate, we walked to Crocker Park and I took several shots of the kids and dog on the Bud's bench and the chair swing. As everyone was getting ready to leave, I took a glance at the harbor and quickly hurried over to this spot just under the flag pole to capture the great clouds that formed as a result of the hot [...]

Fire in the Sky – Heat Wave is Coming

I had missed out on a surprisingly vibrant sunset on Wednesday night and made up for it with tonight's fire in the sky that erupted over the Village street pier. We had been out on a friend's new boat for a tour around the harbor and just returned when I spotted the makings of a nice sunset. At exactly the same moment, my son asked for a ride home so he could meet up with friends. I had my camera with me for shooting the harbor and drove back with an eye to the sky the entire time. As we [...]

Summer Storm in Marblehead

This may not be the first summer storm in Marblehead but it's the first one I was here for and, luckily enough, happened on a Wednesday so I was free to head to the Neck to try to capture some bolts of lightning. I was watching the clouds and radar all afternoon and headed out when the storm approached flanking Marblehead to the north and south. I started off at Castle Rock but kept missing the lightning there and so I packed up and headed to Chandler Hovey Park. I waited for a bit and then spotted the first bolt [...]

Hollywood Comes to Marblehead – Hubie Halloween

After two weeks in London, Tel Aviv and Paris, it was time to return to the real world... or so I thought. Turned out that Marblehead was the backdrop for Adam Sandler's new Netflix movie 'Hubie Halloween' with historic downtown serving as the backdrop for a fall scene in Salem. I visited the set on Monday night when filming had come to a close and was exploring Old Town House draped in orange and black when I spotted a nice sunset forming. From this vantage point on Washington Street, I was able to capture the very different facade of Old [...]

Last stop, Paris

After one week in Tel Aviv, we flew on a Sunday to Paris. On Monday morning, I woke before dawn for some reason and decided to walk out of our apartment in the 6th arrondissement to Pont Neuf and then Pont des Arts. I lucked out with a vibrant dawn and then turned to find a subtle rainbow over the Eiffel Tower! We ended up walking 13 miles that day starting at the Eiffel Tower then Place du Trocadero (both under construction/renovation), on to Arc de Triomphe and up the tight spiraling staircase then down Champs Elyses. That night we [...]

Next Stop, Tel Aviv

We left London on Sunday morning and flew ElAl to Tel Aviv. I was born in Israel but hadn't been back in 20 years and my children had never visited. We had a great rental only a block and a half from the beach and with its own pool which helped a lot when temperatures routinely hit 90F.  We explored Tel Aviv's neighborhoods by foot and by scooter (Lime is big there with dedicated lines along the beach boardwalk). We visited Jaffa one day and Herzliya another. This was the 'relaxing' part of the trip and a nice way for [...]

London Calling

On Wednesday, June 26, my family boarded an overnight flight to London for the start of a two week vacation. I hope you don't mind my taking a break from Marblehead images to share some of my favorites from this trip. We arrived in London on Thursday morning and stayed there until Sunday when we flew to our next destination. In those three days, we would walk over 20 miles from our AirBnB flat in Marylebone to Covent Garden, Buckingham Palace (for the changing of the guard), Westminster to board a boat ride up the Thames River, Borough Market and [...]

The Redcoats Attack

This weekend is the annual Glover's Regiment encampment and, with it, come reenactments of skirmishes harking back to the days of the Redcoats. I had gone down to Front Street on July 12, 2014 just before noon with my son to witness one such battle. Here, the redcoats attack from the waters of Marblehead harbor as Glover's Regiment fights back from atop Fort Sewall.
