Above the Waves at Castle Rock

If you read yesterday's caption to go along with the image of Castle Rock (captured back in February 2017), it wouldn't surprise you that I made a beeline for this place when clouds formed a little after 1pm. I hadn't shot a single frame at Castle Rock and had only just came to that realization. At the same time, I had been rethinking my approach to aerial images. With that in mind, I arrived at Castle Rock only to find the clouds less impressive than I had hoped. I had brought my camera as well as the drone but opted [...]

Remembering Castle Rock

As I was looking for a photo to share today, I found this one of Castle Rock captured on a foggy morning in February 2017. That prompted me to check when I last captured an image of these granite shores and pebble beach only to realize I have not shot a single frame at Castle Rock in over a year. It amazes me that in a 4.4 square mile town, I could go a year without shooting this beautiful location and not even realize it. I like to think that it speaks to the beauty to be found in Marblehead [...]

Full Harbor for the Fourth of July

Another funny story (to borrow the intro from last week's image of kids on the boat) - my wife and I went out for dinner a few nights ago and, while eating, caught the words 'Wednesdays in Marblehead' coming from the table next to us. The group said some incredibly flattering things and my wife and I tried to figure out if/when to introduce ourselves but between the food and changes in conversation, the timing didn't seem right. I did catch one comment that I have been mulling over since then - there were mixed feelings on the drone/aerial images. [...]

Magical Illumination

With temperatures due to pass 90 today and tomorrow, I was in the mood to look back at images from an equally warm Fourth of July this year. I have only shared one image of the harbor illumination that took place that night and thought this image would be a nice way to start the week. The sight of red flares lighting up the harbor remains my favorite part of the July 4th festivities in Marblehead. This year, I was able to capture the magical illumination on both sides of the harbor from my spot along the causeway and with [...]

The Kids are Alright

Funny story...  Not two minutes after taking the image of sunset that I shared on Wednesday night, a boat comes along with a group of kids who spot my camera and immediately pose. As they slowly motor past, they tried to figure out how to contact me. I shouted back to look up Wednesdays in Marblehead and got a bunch of exclamations along the lines of 'you're that guy!' and 'I follow you on Instagram'. I received a nice Facebook message from one of the kids on the boat last night which prompted me to jump to this photo and [...]

Nothing Better than a Marblehead Sunset

For the past few days, I have been sharing images from our long weekend on Nantucket. While there I felt energized with new places to visit and came back feeling unsure if I would be able to find that same drive back home after 10 years of photographing this town. Well, it took less than 48 hours before Marblehead answered with a combination of picture perfect clouds, a harbor filled with boats, Abbot standing tall in the distance and a sailboat approaching its mooring.  There really is nothing better than a Marblehead sunset!

Unbelievable Moonrise

The full moon will rise tonight at 8:10pm and I won't be able to shoot it so I thought I would share an image of the moon from my to be published folder. I dove into my folder and looked through all the moon shots until I stopped at this unbelievable moonrise. I have to admit that the first thing I thought was 'that can't be real'. I honestly thought I had played with a composite and that was why it had not been shared. I looked back at the original file and, sure enough, the moon really was that [...]

Never-ending Sunrise

I thought I would take a break from the drone shots and revise the never-ending sunrise that took place at the end of June. This is the third image captured from Hammond park on the morning of June 30th and I'm amazed when I look back at how different each shot is with a slight change in focal length and a drastic change in cloud cover and color. The sunrise on this morning lasted about 15 minutes which is really an incredibly long period from that first light of dawn painting the clouds overhead to the first peak of the [...]

View from the Top of Marblehead Light

After capturing yesterday's image of Optis sailing during Junior Race week, I returned to Chandler Hovey Park and decided to do a quick loop around the lighthouse. I have shot a close up of Marblehead Light from the other side looking toward the harbor and Abbot Hall but failed to explore other angles. In this view, I came close enough to the top of Marblehead Light so that its entire lantern room was in the frame and then found this spot from which Childrens Island could be spotted in the distance. You can make out the same group of Optis [...]

Marblehead Junior Race Week Begins

I was fortunate to have a day off yesterday just as Marblehead Junior Race Week began and so I headed to Chandler Hovey Park a little after 2pm to see what images I might capture of the Optis racing just outside the harbor. I started off shooting with my real camera and longest zoom but wasn't happy with the compositions so I switched over to the drone. I circled the boats nearest the harbor until I found this composition of the small one-kid boats racing with Marblehead Light standing tall in the distance. Racing continues Tuesday and Wednesday so head out [...]
