An Incredible Dawn from Crocker Park

On Saturday, August 3rd, I woke at 4:45am for no good reason.  My first instinct was to grab the iPhone and figure out cloud cover, sunrise time and location before even considering going back to bed.  The conditions seemed decent so I quickly changed and headed out of the house.  I made a pit stop at Dunkin Donuts as the sky started to brighten and then made a beeline for Crocker Park as the sky started to build with color. I parked on Water Street and snuck some quick shots from the water before running to the top of the [...]

Sunset View from the Water – Marblehead Lighthouse and Harbor

On July 16, a friend took me out on his boat for a two hour excursion around the waters of Marblehead.  I have only shared one image from that trip thus far (there are 15 more after today's post left to go).  For today's image, I decided to follow up on yesterday's calm reflected sunset view with this brighter and bolder view of a sunset from the water. We had made our way around Naugus Head and Fluen Point and then crossed over to explore the back of Tinkers before heading out to Bakers Island.  As we made our way [...]

Summer Rainbow over Marblehead Harbor

On Monday, July 29th, I drove home from work in the sunniest rainstorm I can remember.  The whole way (all 3 miles of it), I wondered if 5:30pm was too early for a proper rainbow to form.  As I dipped down Lafayette street and made my way toward the Welcome to Marblehead sign, I got my answer in the form of a bright sharp rainbow over Salem harbor. With that, I called ahead and pleaded with my wife for a quick photo shoot.  I had just enough time to grab my camera and head toward Marblehead Harbor.  I tried to [...]

A Gaggle of Optis at Marblehead Junior Race Week

On Wednesday morning, I headed out to drop off a framed print for a customer and then made my way out to the Pleon Yacht Club in hopes of catching the Optis heading out as part of Marblehead Junior Race Week.  I got there in time to catch one of the last groups heading out and took some images with Abbot Hall and Marblehead Lighthouse as backdrops.  As I was getting set to go, Dan Tucker (check out his great photography here LINK) offered to take me out and get a close up view of the action.  I quickly jumped [...]

A Line of Pleons at Sunset

Last night, I went out in hopes of catching the Full Buck Moon rising.  While the full moon will be better seen tonight, I was only able to try for the shot last night.  The moon rose early and right into a cloud bank so, while I came away with an okay image, it wasn't a great result.  As I waited for the moon to rise, I noted some great clouds forming behind and all around me.  I decided to head down to Devereux Beach once the moon was buried in the cloud bank and scout out the conditions. I [...]

Marblehead Harbor in the Blue Hour

On June 12th, I woke early and decided to head down to Hammond Park for sunrise.  I arrived near the end of the blue hour and quickly went about capturing images of Marblehead Harbor filled with boats and the lighthouse with its green light on.  I tried a number of compositions and varied shutter speeds but this image ended up as my favorite. Shortly after this image, there was a pause of 20 minutes during which the rain picked up and I huddled in the car waiting for a sunrise.  It turned out to be worth the wait and 'Four [...]

Under a Tree at Fort Sewall

On Sunday, June 16th, I decided to end Father's Day with a photoshoot.  I had noted the possibility of a good sunset and decided to head to Fort Sewall to explore possible images.  I have photographed Fort Sewall on numerous occasions and in various conditions so the thought of finding a new composition in this relatively small area was the last thing I had expected.  However, after descending a set of stairs, I looked back and found this scene before me. The tree and its canopy perfectly placed over a trodden dirt path with boats carefully arranged on their moorings [...]

Morning in Little Harbor

Here is another image from my sunrise shoot on June 12th.  After shooting the sunrise from Hammond Park and then up and down the Landing and causeway, I drove up towards little harbor.  I ended up in front of Marblehead Lobster Company and found these boats parked in the waters of little harbor.  With Gerry island in the immediate background and the lighthouse jutting out in the distance, the composition seemed to work really nicely.  Hope you enjoy this serene image of morning in little harbor.

Firing the Cannon Under a Rainbow – Dolphin Yacht Club

Five yacht clubs in five weeks and it ends with a bang!  For those who might have missed the start of this project, it all began on May 20th when I found myself facing a lackluster sunset and decided to shoot the first of the yacht clubs firing the cannon at sunset.  It was supposed to finish on Tuesday night at the Dolphin Yacht Club.  I had called ahead a week prior and spoken to a wonderfully friendly South African gentleman who ran the launch.  He invited me down to shoot the cannon and the stars seemed to align well [...]

Riding the Launch at Sunset in Marblehead Harbor

After photographing the cannon firing at sunset from the Corinthian Yacht Club, I headed back to where I had parked on Corinthian Lane and marveled at the remaining colors of sunset as they slowly faded over Marblehead harbor.  I setup the camera to capture this scene and the great solitary cloud formation at the edge of the frame when I noted the launch setting out from the Corinthian Yacht Club.  I quickly adjusted my settings and captured the added element of people in this landscape scene which ended up being my favorite capture of the set.  Hope you agree.
