Chasing the Supermoon

Twenty-four hours later, the chase is over. I started my attempt to capture this year's supermoon (otherwise known as the perigee of the moon) on Saturday night. The moon was at its nearest point to Earth in its yearly orbit and that should have resulted in a larger and brighter full moon. From the Rooftops – Flying over the Neck

I thought I had reached the conclusion of my Rooftop series this week. I had scoured old images but did not see any I liked and did not have any shoots lined up. The Rocks of Chandler Hovey Park

Another beautiful Winter sunset took place as I set up at Chandler Hovey park. Rather than shoot the lighthouse, I turned my attention to the rocks that make up the coastline. You can make out Childrens Island in the distance and watch as the approaching wave gets ready to crash onto the rocks below.

The Lighthouse Under the Stars

With the unseasonably warm weather, I decided to pursue a new photographic avenue - shooting the stars. The most important aspects of shooting a sky filled with stars is to try to minimize light pollution and to shoot at least a few hours after sunset and before sunrise. Marblehead Lighthouse in the Snow

As the last week of 2011 begins, I have pulled this photo from the archive to show a snow covered Marblehead. This was taken on December 31st, 2009 after a snow blanketed the town. I headed down to Front Street beach and was fortunate that the tide had not yet removed the snow from the nearby rocks. The holiday lights decorating the lighthouse seem to blaze in the early evening night. Happy Holidays!

Open Seating at Sunset

I couldn't resist another view of the lighthouse lit up for the holidays. After taking yesterday's shot, I walked back towards the car and looked over my shoulder to see what the scene looked like. The composition of the lighthouse with its extra lights, the lone tree and Abbot Hall across the harbor was too good to pass up (despite the freezing cold). I stood on a small rock formation and grabbed this image. You might notice in this image and yesterday's that something is conspicuously absent. The Lighthouse Decked out in Lights

This weekend, the Rotarians ventured up the steps of the lighthouse and decorated it with Christmas lights. I decided to head up to Chandler Hovey park at sunset on Sunday and photograph the lights as the sun set. I was hoping for a cloudless night with subtle colors and was not disappointed. I was also hoping for a still and not too cold evening - I got the first but it was really, really cold out there tonight. Over the Rainbow

The same storm that brought about the reflection shots of the lighthouse also produced a rainbow over Children's Island. I had raced out of the house after the storm blew by in hopes of catching a rainbow and got to the parking lot at Chandler Hovey park just as the sun peeked through the clouds. The location of the rainbow was perfect - it was an unusually flat one likely due to the angle of the sun - and neatly covered Children's Island. The rainbow lasted only a few minutes and I felt lucky to have captured it.

The Rocks at Chandler Hovey Park

Another photo while waiting for a recent time lapse to finish. While exploring the coast and the crevices that mark it, I noticed the golden light that was falling on these rocks. By chance, a sailboat was positioned at just the right spot to lead the eye from the waters below up to the top of the image. The sails caught the setting light and I knew I had a perfect Summer photo of Marblehead.

The Brick Oil House at Chandler Hovey Park

Yesterday's Reflection shot was taken while my older camera was shooting a time lapse movie of the sun setting over the harbor. While waiting for it to finish, I wandered around Chandler Hovey park looking for compositions and angles that I hadn't yet shot. I noticed the sun setting over the brick oil house that used to power Marblehead Light and decided to close down the aperture and turn the bright sun into a sunstar. Having the tree there helped add to the composition as did the full harbor.
