Doing the Moondance

After the purple dawn, a deep red sky and a rising red sun, the sun crossed behind the lighthouse at Chandler Hovey park.  It wasn't until I arrived home that I was able to make out the name of the boat in the foreground...Moondance.  The irony of a boat named after the moon lined up with the rising sun is made more so by the shot I have of the Supermoon that almost exactly mirrors the sun position. This the fourth of five posts this week documenting an incredible sunrise over Marblehead harbor.  This seemed a perfect way to lead up to my [...]

The Sun Also Rises

Following the purple dawn and a deep red sky, the sun began its slow ascent just to the left of the lighthouse at Chandler Hovey park.  This was shot from Hammond park and the clouds were doing a great job of magnifying this already amazing scene.  I can't believe my good fortune to have those wisps of clouds line the red sun as it made its way up. This the third of five posts this week documenting an incredible sunrise over Marblehead harbor.  This seemed a perfect way to lead up to my entry in the Marblehead Festival of the Arts as [...]

The Privateer Lynx comes to town

This week saw the Lynx come to town.  The Lynx is a tall ship inspired by one that fought in the war of 1812.  She came to Marblehead harbor on a foggy Wednesday afternoon and was greeted by a throng of spectators watching from Fort Sewall as well as wind and rain.  She fired off six cannon shots as she made her way to the harbor in response to rifle fire from the Marblehead regiment.  This image was taken during one of those shots and puts the tall ship in the context of our iconic lighthouse. Technical: Canon 50D and [...]

The Supermoon Rises over Marblehead’s Lighthouse

So the super moon rose on Saturday night marking the closest the moon has been to the Earth in 18 years.  The proximity made for an even larger full moon and the atmosphere colored the moon yellow/orange as it rose from the horizon.  I had planned out this location in advance and waited patiently for 7:17pm when the moon began its ascent.  It was moving fast and light from sunset was fading quickly so I had a few frames to capture the beauty of the moon and the light of Chandler Hovey park.  This is my favorite of the set [...]

Planet Marblehead

A warm shot for this week amidst the too-snowy Winter.  This one was taken in August aboard our old neighbor's sailboat and was a pretty standard shot of the lighthouse until I had the idea to turn it in on itself and create a little planet.  The sailboats and lighthouse lined up perfectly and the sky cooperated nicely for this effect.  It's a unique shot and hopefully brings a bit of warm memories to this cold, wet day.

From the Attic of Abbot Hall

Last week I decided to shoot the stained glass window at Abbot before it was removed for renovation.  Turns out I was a week late and will have to wait til Spring to take a picture of the restored glass.  While scouting out other shots, I befriended a caretaker of the building and was invited up to the attic for a rare view from the windows there.  We chatted for a bit as I shot out of two windows.  In this one, you can just make out the lighthouse in the harbor.  Unfortunately, the sky was a bright gray but [...]

The Barnacle

It feels good to be out shooting again!  Today was my first chance to pick up the camera in two weeks.  Headed out about 3pm and wandered around town trying to decide what to shoot.  Headed down State Street (that shot is coming next week...) and ended up driving up Front Street.  When I got to the barnacle, I looked to the right and saw massive waves left over from the recent storms.  They were just starting to recede after the high tide.  I grabbed my gear including a 10-stop filter to let me take very long exposures.  This one [...]

Purple Dawn

Awoke Saturday at 5:30 with the goal of shooting the sunrise from the Neck and, with any luck, the setting Harvest Moon over Abbot hall.  Dawn turned out to be very nice as was the brilliant sunrise at Castle Rock.  Have a number of keepers from the morning and will post them each day this week.  The moon, unfortunately, disappeared into morning clouds.  For a few hours though, I had the entirety of Chandler Hovey park to myself...it made for a great start to the day. Technical: Canon 50D and EF-S 10-22 with B+W 10-stop ND filter.  Four minute exposure.

Storm in the Harbor

We've had three days of nonstop rain that left us with a surf advisory today.  There was a short letup of the rain just as high tide approached and I made my way down to Front Street to see if I could capture the power of the storm using the background of Marblehead harbor.  The initial shot was a bit flat due to the lighting conditions so this is a tonemapped version of my favorite shot from the excursion. Technical: Canon 50D and EF-S 17-55/2.8 IS lens.  Single tonemapped image.
