Exploding Waves at Castle Rock

After witnessing the power of Hurricane Sandy yesterday, I decided to head out again during the noon high tide to try to see if the remaining power of the storm might make for some interesting scenes.  As I drove across the causeway, the sky started to brighten and clear.  When I parked at Castle Rock, I was awed by the size of the waves crashing to shore. The first image I captured was the one above with someone standing atop the rock and trying to capture the scene.  Next I walked over to get the southern view with huge rolling [...]

Sandy Meets Surf Street

As Hurricane Sandy makes her approach, the strength of the storm is starting to show.  I went out today to shoot some long exposures at high tide (and am working on those now) but I couldn't resist grabbing a few shots of the waves hammering the sea wall.  This is a shot from Surf Street which definitely earned its name today.  Caught this one wave as it exploded and sent off a great curl back out to sea.

Long Exposure – the Drain on Preston Beach

This Long Exposure Tuesday view comes from early September when a storm was churning off the coast and I headed out in search of big waves.  Those failed to appear but I hit Preston at high tide and decided to shoot some long exposure images instead.  This one at 25 seconds is relatively short but was enough to turn the incoming tide to a soft white cloud.  My favorite parts of the image are the rocks at the end of this drainage pipe and the ones to the left where the mist seems to encircle them.

Long Exposure – Sit and Watch the Waves at Preston Beach

I told you that 'long exposure Tuesday' was back ; )  With the waves that came from an offshore storm in early September, I decided to head to Preston beach and see what I could do with the action at high tide.  As the waves weren't crashing as expected, I decided to change my approach and shoot long exposure images instead.  For this one, I found a chair (as well as socks, shoes and pants) facing the ocean and decided to use that as the focal point.  This is a relatively short 'long exposure' at only 15 seconds but it [...]

Tinkers Island off Marblehead Neck

In mid-August, my son and I were invited out for an impromptu fishing excursion off the rocks on Marblehead Neck.  I had never been to this section of the neck previously (seeing as there are no public ways accessible) and was glad I had thought to bring my camera.  As the boys scampered on the rocks looking for a fishing spot (a losing effort at dead low tide), I sought out compositions with which to frame the distant view of Tinker's Island.  I settled on this as my favorite with the rock formations in the foreground and the great expansive clouds above. [...]

Long Exposure – Stairs to the Mist

Continuing with the newly resurrected long exposure theme, here are the stairs leading down from the sea wall I showed in yesterday's post.  Prior to taking that photo of the overlook, I played with long exposures and the waves that slammed against the sea wall.  By extending this exposure time to 20 seconds, I was able to turn the crashing waves into a mist and make it appear that the stairs were descending to clouds or some other-worldly substance below.

Along the Sea Wall

The first weekend in September brought great big waves at high tide and I decided to explore the ocean from the vantage point at Surf Street.  I ended up exploring the entire length of the sea wall until I reached the end and this small overlook.  The light hit at just the right moment and I caught some nice churning waves as they lapped against the rock mass below.

Intentional Camera Movement – Ocean at Sunset

Last week, I posted an image taken of a wave coming to shore at sunset that I shot with a lens at wide aperture.  The effect was to alter the sense of scale of the wave and the image was very well received.  I thought I would follow that up with this image taken a few minutes later and with the same lens.  This time I closed down the aperture to increase the shutter speed and panned across the ocean.  The effect was to turn the waves into streaks and use the golden light to paint them.  I'll ask the [...]

Silhouettes on Preston Beach

The rule of thumb is that you should put away the camera when the sun is high overhead.  The light tends to be fairly flat and very bright making it difficult to get a solid landscape or any other shot.  As it happened, I was out with the kids at Preston Beach on this late August day and had my camera and a long lens with me.  I managed a few decent shots of the kids but, as we walked back from the tide pools, I saw this great scene. A boat tied up off the shore, people in and [...]

Long Exposure – Clouds Pass Marblehead Light

As I mentioned in yesterday's post, I had set out on Saturday hoping to use the fast moving clouds for a long exposure image.  It has been a while since I had pulled out the 10-stop filter and played with exposures measured in minutes.  As the light faded, I found myself near the edge of the lot and trying to capture the lighthouse with clouds behind and the crashing waves transformed to mist below. In this two minute exposure, you can make out the streaks of clouds in the sky.  Even more amazing is the swirls of white in the [...]
