Long Exposure – Smoking Tendrils on Devereux Beach

Tuesday means it's time for a Long Exposure image and this time we turn to Devereux beach.  I shared an image in color and of much shorter duration taken during the sunset on December 23rd.  I had noted these great tendrils that formed as the surf pushed through at certain points.  The previous image showed the reflections of sunset [see it by clicking here]. This image was created as a 30 second exposure.  The longer duration turned the ocean into mist and I processed this to accentuate the water below and clouds above.  I'm curious which you like more - [...]

Fiery Tendrils Reach Out at Devereux Beach

I mentioned in yesterday's post that I had gone out on Sunday to shoot the sunset before capturing the image of the lighthouse dressed up for the season.  I had driven to Devereux beach in the hopes that the clouds would break just enough for a nice sunset.  As I arrived and evaluated the beach, I noticed the ocean kept coming in tendril-like motions at certain points.  I decided to set up the tripod at one of them and waited for the sun to dip below the horizon.  As it did so, a red light emanated and was reflected in [...]

Sunset from Bass Rock Lane

I mentioned on Monday's post that I had gone out last Wednesday as the sun set to explore Bass Rock Lane.  After taking a few images of the houses that line the water's edge, I settled down near this tide pool to catch reflections of the setting sun.  This was taken at the peak of the night's color show.  The still waters in the tide pool made for a great reflective surface that mirrored what was happening in the sky above.  It's always exciting to find a new spot to shoot from and even more so when the weather and [...]

Tide Pools and Reflected Sunset Light

On Wednesday December 5th, I was just getting home after taking care of errands all day and noted the light and clouds as sunset approached.  I went inside to grab the camera and drove out again to find a new spot.  The light changed quickly as the sun ducked below the horizon and I had enough time to make it across Atlantic Avenue to Bass Rock Lane before the light disappeared.  I managed to capture one frame of the homes along the water illuminated by light and then began to explore the rock formations at the end of Bass Rock [...]

Long Exposure – The Rocks at Preston Beach

Another Tuesday and another long exposure image.  This one was taken back in late May as the sun was setting.  I had been playing with various compositions and then tried this one at the end.  I allowed the exposure to go a bit longer than usual and ended up with almost no line between the water and sky at the horizon.  You can just barely make out the hint of it at the corners which makes for a pretty interesting image.  The strong textures on the rocks contrast nicely against the smoothness of the water in this 147 second exposure.

Thankful for Two Great Years of Sharing Images of Marblehead

It's Thanksgiving and I wanted to take this opportunity to give thanks to this incredible community for welcoming me and showing such support of my attempts to photograph this beautiful town I feel fortunate to call home. Thank you to all those who commented on my images both here and on my Facebook page. Thank you to everyone who emailed me with words of support and encouragement when an image had a particular effect on them. Thank you to all those who welcomed me into their physical homes (and roofs) during the Rooftop Thursday series.  And to all those who [...]

November Sunset over Devereux Beach

Here is another image taken this past Sunday when all the elements seemed to line up to offer a great Fall sunset.  As the clouds developed overhead, I made my way down to Devereux beach and set about exploring the light and movement of the ocean.  I noted that, since Superstorm Sandy came and went, the sand seemed much finer and lacking the rocks that had always characterized this stretch of beach.  When I chose this spot for the image, I felt a bit like I was on another smooth beach in the Carolinas rather than Devereux in Marblehead.  Then [...]

Pylons in the Misty Water

A new location on this Long Exposure Tuesday - the beach at the end of Corn Point Road.  I had found this group of old pylons last Winter but, at the time, the tide was too low for the image that I hoped to capture.  When I revisited the location at high tide a few months later, I was disappointed to see that, yet again, the water failed to reach the level of the close pylons.  So it was with fingers crossed that I drove out again during an astronomical high tide to see if luck might favor the persistent... Swirling Water at Castle Rock

I haven't shot a landscape image in a few weeks but that has 'forced' me to return to my archive of images and rescue some of these from the seemingly never ending waiting line before they see the light of day.  In this case, the image from Castle Rock at sunset dates back to June 11, 2008!  I had this image waiting to post but decided to rework it last night in preparation with some new techniques I had picked up over the past 4 years.  I was able to bring a bit more color into the sky and rock [...]

Greystone Beach After the Storm

For the past few days now, I've been chasing Sandy's effects both during and after the storm's peak.  I had a feeling that one of these mornings might prove to be a decent one for a sunrise shoot and realized that this morning was just the one.  On Wednesday, I looked out and noted some nice clouds and a touch of pink in the sky.  I quickly got into the car and drove off only to turn around when I realized I had forgotten my tripod! I finally made it out and realized the light was changing fast.  Did a [...]
