The First Breath of Summer

I woke this morning at 4:30am hoping to catch a nice sunrise over Marblehead Harbor with projected warm air coming to town.  Unfortunately, the warm air meant humidity and dense fog that spoiled my best laid plans.  I returned home having only taken a few frames and crawled back into bed. As the evening arrived, I headed out with my daughter to walk our new puppy and noted pink light beginning to form overhead.  I made sure he finished his business and then made a beeline for the house and my wife who agreed to finish the walk while I [...]

Last Light at Castle Rock

In early June 2013, I had gone out near sunset and quite literally chased this small cloud from the house across the causeway and onto Marblehead Neck.  I had recently delivered a print to a house overlooking Castle Rock and made a quick call on my way to see if I could shoot from a spot I had eyed the day before. As luck would have it, the cloud floated into a perfect spot and both it and the outcropping known as Castle Rock began to reflect the last light of sunset just as I set up my tripod.  I [...]

Still Waters at Sunset

On Friday night, I headed out at sunset hoping to catch a beautiful sunset light up the evening sky.  Clouds had filled the sky as the day progressed but a small break near the horizon offered the chance for sunlight to shine through and set the clouds on fire. As luck would have it, the break in the clouds closed as the sun set and I had to make due with a more subdued blue light in the night sky.  As it happened, Marblehead Harbor was very calm and I decided to close down the aperture on the camera and [...]

Road to Nowhere – Gerry Island in the Fog

May is usually synonymous with foggy days as warm weather slowly advances into Marblehead.  This year was an exceptions with days and weeks of rain during what would be the 'foggy season'.  As I looked for an image to share today, I found this unique view of Gerry Island in the fog. I had gone out on this early May day in 2012 chasing the fog at sunset and hoping the two atmospheric phenomenon would combine to form a stunning sunset.  I explored Fort Sewall as the sun set (sadly, the fog became too thick to allow sunset's light through) [...]

Marblehead High School Graduation – Get the Perfect Gift for your New Grad

Every year since publishing my Wednesdays in Marblehead calendar, I have tried to figure out when the Marblehead High School graduation would take place.  Instead of the Doctor Seuss books that often accompany young graduates to college, I thought that a more unique gift would be the Marblehead book and/or Marblehead calendar to allow these soon-to-be freshmen with a small piece of home to take with them.  The actual date of graduation isn't readily available - I was finally able to find it on the high school website by clicking on the calendar of events. When is the Marblehead High [...]

Leading Lines on the Causeway

Our final image of the week and a good lead off for the weekend is this one from the morning of May 6, 2012.  I had gone out on this morning to shoot the Marblehead Carnival in the early light and had hoped to capture the full moon setting as well.  The latter didn't work out with the cloud cover but I was able to capture some nice images of Devereux Beach in the blue hour. As the morning light broke through the clouds, I made my way up to the causeway and stopped here when I saw that the lamp [...]

High Over Five Corners

In April 2012, I was invited for a flight in a Cessna over Marblehead.  This was before the proliferation of drones and a chance to shoot from above Marblehead seemed like a once in a lifetime opportunity.  Though we didn't stay up for long (turbulence got the better of me), we did make a few passes over familiar spots and I did my best to capture them. This image was taken while flying high over Five Corners.  The intersection can be a challenging one for newcomers with its even numbered stop signs for an odd number of roads converging here. [...]

Foggy Sunset over Marblehead Harbor

Continuing this week's exploration of the archives brings us this image from late June 2013.  I had gone out to the Dolphin Yacht Club this evening to capture the sunset cannon being fired and ended up being witness to a beautiful pink foggy sunset. The light was incredible and the water content of the fog served to help diffuse and reflect the sunset colors.  If you look carefully, you can spot a faint rainbow that appeared overhead for a few minutes shortly after the cannon was fired.

The Shores of Chandler Hovey

As I looked through the archive to find yesterday's image of a warm Summer sunset, I couldn't help finding enough images to fill this week's posts.  As my full time job as an Allergist hits its busiest week with birch and oak pollen likely to hit seasonal highs, I thought I would continue with images from the archives and resign myself to leaving the camera in the bag this week. Today's image comes from May 2012 and a visit to Chandler Hovey Park on a foggy day.  I had been shooting a lot of long exposure images and decided to [...]

Waving Flags at the Launch

This weekend's weather likely put many in mind for Summer nights spent on the water and I wouldn't be surprised to see Marblehead Harbor filled a bit more after some additional warm days this week.  As the harbor is still a bit empty to be as photogenic as it becomes in the Summer, I decided to look through my archive for an image to share this morning. This one comes from July 22, 2015 and a warm Summer evening with a gently breeze that you can see in the waving flags aboard the two launch boats parked at the Eastern [...]
