Smoke in the Harbor

As the sun rose on Sunday, February 14, I made my way across the causeway and onto Marblehead Neck to capture images of the still present sea smoke inside Marblehead Harbor.  Despite the sun, the air temperature remained below zero and the smoke kept rising from the water.  Unfortunately, the wind had shifted slightly and was blowing straight at me. I drove into the lot at Chandler Hovey park only to quickly turn around having not seen any photographic opportunities.  I made my way down to the causeway and spotted these two working boats moored near shore.  I had to [...]

Smoke Crashes Over the Causeway

My first stop on Sunday was Riverhead Beach which offered a great location for scouting out the morning's sea smoke.  While the temperatures of -10F meant that sea smoke would likely occur, the predicted winds of 20MPH made me nervous that any rising smoke would quickly disappear with the gusts of wind.  As soon as I pulled into the lot at Riverhead, those fears disappeared and the beauty of sea smoke rising from Marblehead harbor greeted me. I quickly got out of the car and felt the arctic temperatures for the first time.  I had dressed perfectly it turned out [...]

Tendrils of Sea Smoke at Sunrise

Sunday's arctic air resulted in a display of sea smoke the likes of which I had never seen before in Marblehead.  The display kept me busy capturing various compositions as the wind and light changed to drastically alter the scene before me. On Monday, I shared a wide view of the sun just rising over the cloud of sea smoke and setting a nearby patch aglow.  Exactly five minutes after that scene, this one appeared. The sun had risen enough to clear the smoke at the horizon and it created the most incredible backlighting for the tendrils of sea smoke forming [...]

Seal Beach, Marblehead

This President's Day weekend, a lone seal pup was spotted basking in the sun on the rocks at Fort Beach.  He became a regular visitor to this spot and so, on the Saturday before record cold temperatures were due to arrive, my family and I headed over to see if we could spot the newest resident of Marblehead. Sure enough, the seal could be seen along the nearest rocks to the roadway.  He (or she) would perk up its head when cars passed but otherwise seemed quite content to lie there on this relatively warm perch.  I started off shooting [...]

Gerry Island Bathed in Sea Smoke

Sunday, February 14th saw record low temperatures and the most incredible display of sea smoke in Marblehead.  I spent much of the morning shooting from Fort Beach and Fort Sewall toward Marblehead Light.  When the sun rose high enough in the sky to make further compositions less interesting, I got back into the warm car and drove off to capture other familiar scenes bathed in sea smoke. Gerry Island was only a short way from my spot on Fort Beach so I drove past the lobster shanties and made my way there next.  I had checked the tides the night before [...]

Lighting up the Sea Smoke

This morning I was fortunate to witness and capture the most incredible display of sea smoke in Marblehead Harbor.  I started shooting at 6:30am and clicked the shutter for the last time at 8:00am.  During that time, I took more than 100 images and, only after coffee and a hot shower, did I finally go through them to find and process my favorites.  I shared one image already but found that I had 13 favorite images of sea smoke from this morning and really wanted to show one wide view as well. The relatively warm ocean was producing copious amounts [...]

Pillars of Sea Smoke in Marblehead Harbor

This morning's record low temperatures (the coldest Marblehead has been in over a decade) meant that sea smoke was likely to occur.  Since moving to Marblehead in 2008, sea smoke has become one of my favorite subjects to photograph.  While I've taken photos of this incredible phenomenon of steam coming off the relatively hot ocean (with air temperatures of -10F above it), I've never seen a display of sea smoke as occurred this morning. After dressing appropriately for the arctic temperatures (it must have been -20 something with the wind chill), I left the house and made my first stop [...]

A Nearly Frozen Redd’s Pond

Most years, Redd's Pond is frozen during the month of January and makes for a perfect spot to lace up skates and fly across the pond with family and friends.  This year's very mild January meant that Redd's Pond never fully froze and those picturesque scenes never materialized. I drove to Redd's Pond on January 24th after a brief cold snap to check the status of the pond and found a beautiful scene before me.  The water seemed to be caught in stages of freezing but hadn't quite made it all the way to the middle.  You can see a [...]

A Shining Star and Abbot Hall

Every December, a shining star appears atop a crane in Marblehead as one of many local markers of the holiday season.  I've shot this star from State Street, the causeway and Chandler Hovey Park trying to find interesting compositions.  One year, I found a spot where the star seemed to hang over Abbot Hall tower... This year, I ventured out on a very mild mid-December evening as a nice pink sunset formed over Marblehead Harbor.  I ended up walking the length of the causeway and stopped when I reached this point.  The position of the shining star to the right [...]

Sunset After the Storm at Crocker Park

Once in a while, a snow storm departs just as the sun begins to set leading to perfect conditions and incredible light.  Such was the case on this day one year ago - February 10, 2015 - when one of the countless storms departed as the sun began to set. I was at Crocker Park shooting a favorite composition of Abbot Hall when I turned and saw the golden light spread over Marblehead Neck.  I quickly changed position and composed this image including the barren branches of a tree to help frame the final scene. I haven't had a chance [...]
