Catching the Moon Rise at Bass Rock Lane

On Tuesday, June 30th, my daughter was attending a cooking class at Shubies that was due to end at 7pm.  Realizing that pickup would tie in closely to sunset, I grabbed my camera and two old ones for the kids and went out with my son to pick her up.  We grabbed some ice cream at Terry's next door and I tried to figure out the best spot to take them.  The sunset didn't hold much promise and so we drove home.  Along the way, I spotted the moon rising over the water and decided on a last minute detour [...]

Marblehead Fireworks – The Grand Finale

There's a danger in looking at images and sharing them too quickly after an event.  On the Fourth of July, I raced home from Marblehead Neck on my bicycle passing bumper to bumper traffic on the causeway.  As soon as I walked in the door, I plugged my camera's memory card in and hoped that some of the Marblehead fireworks images came out as nice as I remembered them. I scanned the images quickly and selected three different views of the evening's great show.  It was only this weekend, when I had time to carefully review the images from the [...]

Pink Dawn on Redd’s Pond

On July 1st, I had woken up around 4:30am in order to capture the dawn and rising sun over Doliber Cove.  Shortly after the sun rose, I raced back to my car and headed to Redd's Pond where I hoped the trees might offer some cover from the sun's strong glow and allow me a few more opportunities to capture the pink dawn that had developed. As it turned out, I made it just in the nick of time.  The pink clouds visible low in the morning sky and reflected in the still water of Redd's Pond burned off within five minutes [...]

Harbor Illumination on the Fourth of July

This year's Fourth of July celebration was a whirlwind event during which I participated in my first Artisans Marketplace and learned that I had won Peoples Choice Award in the Festival of Arts Photography exhibit.  With both those events having just taken place, I rode my bicycle onto Marblehead Neck in the hopes of capturing images of the annual harbor illumination as well as the Marblehead fireworks display.  I've shared a few images from this night already but finally had the chance to review other images captured that evening and found a few more I would like to share with [...]

The Full Moon over Marblehead Neck

One last image (for now) of the incredible light that took shape over Marblehead on July 1st.  After capturing the red glow of houses on the Neck and then racing up to the top of Crocker Park for an image of Abbot Hall and the purple light of the coming storm, I returned to the water's edge once more to shoot the full moon rising over Marblehead Neck. By this point, the full moon had risen above the layer of haze that had obscured it earlier and the clouds had began to spread overhead.  I spotted a couple on the Crocker [...]

Full Moon and the Eastern’s Red Glow

As I mentioned in yesterday's post, I was set up to capture the full moon rising from Crocker Park when a red glow began to form on the Eastern Yacht Club and houses on Marblehead Neck.  This was the scene I stared at, dumbfounded, until I looked behind me and saw the purple light from a coming storm was the source of the mysterious red glow.

Purple Light and the Coming Storm

I mentioned in yesterday's post that I had gone out at dawn to capture images of Doliber Cove specifically because a storm was forecast for later that day.  A coming storm usually signals good light at dawn as in the old adage 'red sky in morning, sailor take warning'.  As it turns out, the coming storm would bring some incredible purple light with it later that evening... I had gone out again on the night of July 1 to participate in the Marblehead Festival of Arts Awards Night ceremony at Abbot Hall.  Since the full moon was due to rise [...]

Summer Sunrise at Doliber Cove

On Wednesday, July 1, a storm was predicted for Marblehead as was early morning fog.  With that in mind, I set the alarm clock for 4:30am in hopes of capturing a beautiful dawn and Summer sunrise at Doliber Cove. I arrived to low tide and lackluster light but that all changed as the sun began to rise above the horizon and clouds started to shift in the sky.  I moved from my original vantage point to create a more dynamic composition and was really happy with the way this came out. The boats in the water, houses along Crowninshield road [...]

Peoples Choice Award – Marblehead Festival of Arts 2015

I am honored to receive the Peoples Choice Award at the Marblehead Festival of Arts 2015 for the second consecutive year!  This year's image Hooper to the Harbor was an overwhelming favorite when I first shared it and that sentiment seemed to be shared by the thousands attendees of this years 50th Marblehead Festival of Arts. A bit of background on the image: During the Summer of 2014, scaffolding went up around St. Michaels’ Church as a new steeple was raised on the building.  I managed to make my way to the top of the scaffolding one August evening with the [...]

Peoples Choice Award – Marblehead Festival of Arts 2014

I was honored to receive the Peoples Choice Award at the Marblehead Festival of Arts 2014 for this image - Storm Chasing at Chandler Hovey Park. Here is a bit of background on the image: I was down at the Pleon Yacht Club shooting across the harbor and hoping to capture the great cumulus clouds over the harbor when the sky turned ominously dark.  I quickly left and headed to Chandler Hovey Park where I switched to an ultra wide angle lens and stood on a bench to capture the 7 images that would make up this final panoramic shot. [...]
