Of Sailboats, Landmarks and Marblehead Harbor seen from Children’s Island

At the end of July, we went out to Children's Island where my son was spending two weeks at camp.  I shared an image taken from aboard the Hannah Glover previously but had kept this one taken from the island.  As we were getting ready to leave Children's Island, I noted these three sailboats moored in the mouth of the island's harbor with Marblehead lighthouse and Abbot Hall visible in the distance under great clouds.  I positioned myself such that each landmark fell within the triangular lines of the two sailboats and clicked the shutter when I felt the sailboat [...]

30 Minute Tie Up at Rockett Landing

Back to the archive for this image taken in April 2011.  At the time, we were renting an apartment off Village Street so this spot had become a favorite from which to shoot the sunset.  I could look out our window to check conditions and then make a mad dash down the hill to try to capture some of the beautiful sunsets that would take shape over the waters of Salem harbor from this spot at Rockett Landing. This particular image sat in the queue but never seemed to be good enough to warrant a share.  I spent about an [...]

The Lifeguard Chair on Devereux Beach

With the strong sunset colors of yesterday's image (and the equally strong ones in tomorrow's shot), I thought I would switch to black and white for today's post.  This was taken at Devereux Beach in August while my wife was out of town and I was looking for something to keep the kids occupied.  It promised to be a warm evening so I grabbed the camera and we headed out to Devereux beach. The beach was surprisingly empty though you can see the cloud cover in this photo which kept it from being a great beach day.  The kids still [...]

Sunset at Marblehead Light

With over 300 images in the queue waiting to see the light of day, I thought I would go to the bottom of the pile and see what I was out shooting four years ago.  This image of Marblehead Light and a great sunset jumped out at me.  There is something about that green glow against the deep blue sky that just 'fits'.  Turns out it was taken almost exactly four years ago - Sept 9, 2009.  Seemed like a good shot to start the week.

Walking Home from Brown’s Island

The tides in Little Harbor and the way that roads appear and disappear between the mainland and both Gerry Island and Brown's Island have always amazed me.  I found myself at this spot in search of an image of the full moon one evening in July.  As I waited, I noted this group walking along the now submerged path from Brown's Island.  I caught a few photos as they walked through the water but this one of the leader looking back was my favorite. If you didn't know there was a path underfoot, the image would probably seem eerie and [...]

Marblehead Veterans Middle School Under the Flag

In late July, I decided to head out and try to photograph the Marblehead Veterans Middle School.  I had previously scouted the area and thought I would try for a long exposure image.  While I had a few ideas in mind, none were panning out quite as I had hoped.  As I was ready to pack up and leave empty-handed, I noted the old lettering at the top of the building denoting this as the former Marblehead High School and the proximity of the American flag. I ended up on my back looking up at this scene as it was [...]

Abbot Hall Under the Tree

I've photographed Abbot Hall countless times at this point and so, when I spotted a new vantage point and composition on the morning of August 3rd, a huge grin plastered itself on my face.  This was taken shortly after yesterday's image of the float at Crocker Park as I made my way back to the car. The sun had risen into the morning sky and I had exhausted all possible compositions and angles to be had on this particular morning.  As I walked by the tree at Crocker Park and saw that Abbot Hall could be seen under its full [...]

Quiet Morning at Crocker Park Float

Back to Crocker Park and that great dawn of August 3rd.  I shared two other images from Crocker Park taken this morning.  This one came about after both of those when I walked down the steps to the bridge connecting the Crocker Park float in Marblehead harbor to the stairs and mainland.  The waters were calm and the light great making for a very serene morning scene. Only a few more weeks to enjoy the float and the waters in town.

Purple Summer Sunset over Marblehead Harbor

It seems as though we have had some incredibly varied sunsets this Summer and this image taken from a particularly nice one in late July is no exception.  I shared an image from near the end of the good light focusing on Abbot Hall previously [LINK].  The great thing about these Summer sunsets is that they seem to last forever (even long after the sun has dipped below the horizon) and, depending on cloud cover, the colors can be truly spectacular. I moved all around the pier at the Pleon Yacht Club on this particular evening trying different compositions.  This [...]

Sunflowers in Marblehead

I shared a single image of a sunflower last week and decided to share more to finish up this week.  As I mentioned then, these sunflowers were a gift from someone in town whose crop I had admired last Summer.  This crop now resides outside my office window and I took the opportunity last week to photograph some of them in great light and in various stages.  Enjoy a gallery of images below.
