A Shining Star Over State Street

On the morning of December 30th, I headed out in hopes of capturing the streets of Old Town draped in a light dusting of freshly fallen snow.  As the sun had yet to rise, I decided to head to Front Street first and capture the sunrise.  Along the way, I drove down State Street.  When I saw the wreaths on the lit street lamps and the shining star in the distance, I knew I had to stop and capture this scene first.  The only spot that worked for the composition I had in mind was the middle of the street [...]

Keep it Local – Marblehead Little Theater

Ever since I read about the Marblehead Little Theater building out a new vestibule, I've wanted to get this image.  During the building, I was actually fortunate to be taken up to the (now closed) tower and captured a few scenes for my From the Rooftops series. On this December morning, I was waiting to shoot the Christmas tree at the National Grand lot and walked around the block while waiting for the sun to rise and the light to gather.  I was thrilled to see the Marblehead Little Theater without a car out front and with a few great [...]

From the Rooftops – Through the Window of St Michaels Church

As I mentioned in yesterday's sunrise post, I spent the New Year of 2013 the same way I had started 2012 - climbing up to the top of the steeple of a church in Marblehead.  This time it was St Michaels and Steve Clay accompanied me.  We made it to the steeple only to find two barriers in the way - chicken wire and thick wooden louvres on each window.  I had noticed one window on the level below so we headed back down to see if there were any photos to be had there.  As I peered to the [...]

Dawn of a New Year in Marblehead

2012 began with a sunrise shoot from the roof of the Old North Church.  It was therefore with a sense of symmetry and a feeling of starting a new tradition, that I climbed the steps of St Michaels Church to shoot sunrise on January 1st, 2013.  Unfortunately, the conditions did not permit a shoot from the top of the steeple.  I'll share one image from that outing tomorrow.  I did finish up there just in time to head down to the water and try for a sunrise from a new location. I parked at The Landing and walked along the [...]

2012 – A Year of Marblehead Images in Ten Minutes

Last year, I posted my first slideshow of images and it was very well received.  When I set out to create this year's version, I realized that I had shared a lot more images in 2012...263 in all.  I gathered every image posted to the site in the year and then organized them by date taken.  That sequence seemed to make more sense and flowed better than posting them as they appeared on the site.  This way you can see entire outings of sunset images, keep it local, long exposure and from the rooftop images.  I turned again to the [...]

Top 12 of 2012 – Best Marblehead Images of the Year

The Top 12 of 2012 It's been quite a year on Wednesdays in Marblehead.  I have shared 263 images in the past year - 50 more than I did in 2011 - hopefully the added images haven't been too much.   When it came time to choose the top 12 images of 2012, I had a hard time getting past a final selection of 42 images.  I turned to my Facebook page and the fans there answered the call and got us to these 12 images that best represent the past year.  I hope you like the final selection.  Make [...]

From the Rooftops – The Cupola of Old North Church

It has been almost exactly one year since I made the trek up to the top of the Old North Church with Rhod Sharp.  It was New Years Day of 2012 when we climbed up to the cupola...only to find the interior fogged.  While Rhod managed to find a way out at the balcony below, I shot two images of the interior under dawn's light.  I shared the first a while back but decided to bring this image out as the New Year approaches. This will be my last image shared in 2012.  Come back to the page for my [...]

Fiery Tendrils Reach Out at Devereux Beach

I mentioned in yesterday's post that I had gone out on Sunday to shoot the sunset before capturing the image of the lighthouse dressed up for the season.  I had driven to Devereux beach in the hopes that the clouds would break just enough for a nice sunset.  As I arrived and evaluated the beach, I noticed the ocean kept coming in tendril-like motions at certain points.  I decided to set up the tripod at one of them and waited for the sun to dip below the horizon.  As it did so, a red light emanated and was reflected in [...]

Long Exposure – Christmas Comes to Chandler Hovey Park

Merry Christmas everyone!  And could you ask for a more festive scene than Marblehead Lighthouse lit up with lights?  I was out shooting at sunset on Sunday night and, when the lights faded, decided to head out to Chandler Hovey Park to photography the lighthouse lit up for the season.  The park was empty on this cold night and I decided to use the same compositions as a recently shared photo with snow on the ground [link].  As the light was fading and since Christmas would fall on 'long exposure Tuesday', I decided to shoot this image over 30 [...]

Abbot Hall Standing Over an Empty Harbor

On Wednesday, December 19th, I noted the clouds had started to gather as the sun set and decided to drive out to Parker Lane in hopes of a decent Winter sunset.  I got there just as the sun dipped below the horizon and captured a few different compositions.  As I was getting ready to pack up, some light pink color washed over the clouds directly over Abbot Hall.  I had all of two minutes of this great light and tried to make the most of it with this zoomed in view. You might have noticed that in most of my [...]
