Marblehead’s Christmas Tree

The annual Christmas tree lighting took place a few weeks ago in the National Grand Bank parking lot.  I was too busy with the kids and friends to photograph the tree at the time.  One day, while at National Grand Bank, I spoke with Jim Nye and he offered to turn on the lights a bit early so that I could get a certain composition.  I awoke that Thursday and headed straight for the bank.  It was still too dark for the image that I had envisioned so I spent some time shooting the marquees of businesses with empty streets [...]

The Menorah at Marblehead Savings Bank

I had been on the lookout for an outdoor menorah to photograph in town but a drive by Temple Emanu-El, the JCC, Sinai and Hillel came up empty.  I turned to the All Marblehead page and received the hint about Marblehead Savings Bank from Lisa Indelicato (another photographer in town).  So on the eighth night of Hanukkah, I headed out to photograph it fully lit.  I arrived at the bank a bit early but watched as the sun started its decent toward the horizon.  I realized that it might dip at just the right angle for a sun star and [...]

Summer Sunset over Marblehead Harbor

I miss Summer sunsets.  There is something about the light that time of year that causes near explosions of color to take over the sky.  This is an image from June 2011 that has been waiting in the queue and was recently reprocessed to bring out more of the details in the boats and Abbot Hall in the distance.  The colors on this night just kept building the the point at which both the sky and water seemed to be on fire with deep oranges.  Hopefully the warmth of that night comes across the screen on this cold December [...]

Long Exposure – Marblehead Harbor in Black and White

Much of my black and white long exposure work has been influenced by some incredibly talented photographers whom I have met through Google+.  Of them, Joel Tjintjelaar has been a particularly strong influence.  His work is simply incredible and I highly recommend a visit to his online gallery: http://www.bwvision.com/ This image was taken at dawn in mid-November shortly after capturing this view of Fort Sewall and the harbor [link].  I turned to face the causeway and captured this view of Marblehead harbor (now empty for the Winter) in a 15 second exposure.  I had initially processed it in color but the [...]

The Brick Oil House in the Snow

Back to the great snows of 2009 for this image of the brick oil house that used to power Marblehead lighthouse.  This was taken in mid-January of what would end up being a great year for photos of snow.  I remember making my way to Chandler Hovey Park shortly after the snow stopped falling (and the plows made the roads drivable) to capture images of Winter's best.  The lighthouse itself didn't offer much but, after walking around to this vantage point, I knew I had the composition I wanted.  Between the old brick oil house and the covered bench as well [...]

Keep it Local – National Grand Bank

Last Wednesday, while running errands including depositing some checks at the National Grand Bank, I asked about the timing of the lights for the Christmas tree in the parking lot across the street.  I ended up meeting and speaking with Jim Nye, the bank president, and he offered to turn on the lights at dawn the following morning so that I could photograph the tree. I spent some time on this morning shooting that tree and walking around School, Essex and Pleasant Streets to capture some other businesses.  As the light began to show in the morning sky, I decided [...]

From the Rooftops – Out the Attic of Old Town House

Last week, I shared the story of climbing up the ladder to explore the nearly 300 year old attic of the Old Town House.  I had about 15 minutes to shoot from the two windows that looked out on Washington Street below and, with the traffic from the annual Christmas Walk, timing those shoots was very difficult.  This was another favorite image looking out of this great old window.

Sunset from Bass Rock Lane

I mentioned on Monday's post that I had gone out last Wednesday as the sun set to explore Bass Rock Lane.  After taking a few images of the houses that line the water's edge, I settled down near this tide pool to catch reflections of the setting sun.  This was taken at the peak of the night's color show.  The still waters in the tide pool made for a great reflective surface that mirrored what was happening in the sky above.  It's always exciting to find a new spot to shoot from and even more so when the weather and [...]

Long Exposure – Abbot Hall Under the Clouds

This Long Exposure Tuesday features an image of Abbot Hall taken in late March of this year.  I had set out on a windy day with great clouds in the sky to try to capture some images of buildings in town.  I had good luck with the direction of the clouds as they sailed over Our Lady Star of the Sea (LINK) and the Jeremiah Lee Mansion (LINK) but found them going the 'wrong' way over Abbot.  I only had this angle to shoot given the direction of the sun and was getting discouraged until I spied this one cloud [...]

Tide Pools and Reflected Sunset Light

On Wednesday December 5th, I was just getting home after taking care of errands all day and noted the light and clouds as sunset approached.  I went inside to grab the camera and drove out again to find a new spot.  The light changed quickly as the sun ducked below the horizon and I had enough time to make it across Atlantic Avenue to Bass Rock Lane before the light disappeared.  I managed to capture one frame of the homes along the water illuminated by light and then began to explore the rock formations at the end of Bass Rock [...]
