The Marines Leave Town

What an incredible weekend!  If you missed my posts on Saturday (CLICK HERE) and Sunday (CLICK HERE), the Marines came to town this weekend for the Marine Aviation Centennial celebration marking the 100th anniversary of the first Marine flight that took off from Marblehead harbor.  We had four helicopters arrive Friday and park at the Village school where kids (and adults) could view these incredible machines up close. On Saturday, there was a fly over by Corsair and T28 planes as well as a parade with Humvees.  After the parade, a trove of gear was shown off and my son [...]

Corsair and T28 Fly Over the Harbor

As part of this weekend's Marine Aviation Centennial celebration in Marblehead, Corsair and T-28 planes were slated to fly over the harbor.  I decided to head to the Neck for a vantage point that would hopefully allow for some shots of the planes crossing Abbot Hall or the Lighthouse.  The planes were beautiful to behold and, thanks to a borrowed lens, I was able to get close up shots of them flying overhead.  The shot above is my favorite of the set but I included a few more below in a gallery that includes two fly-bys over Abbot and one [...]

Marblehead’s Marine Aviation Celebration Begins

This weekend marks the 100th anniversary of the first flight of a marine plane and the mark of marine aviation's beginning.  As part of the celebration, four marine helicopters arrived in town today and will make the Village School their home for the weekend.  I captured one as it circled Abbot Hall prior to landing and then visited the helicopters with my son in the afternoon.  After seeing them displayed, I decided to try my luck at photographing them at sunset. The grounds were still well attended as the sun went down and I waited patiently (drenched in DEET and [...]

Chasing the Light 5 – Abbot and the Boats under a Pink Sky

This is the last image in our Chasing the Light series.  After the light hit its peak, I chose to zoom in from yesterday's wide view and try to compose an image with Abbot Hall and the boats in the harbor while maximizing the light reflected in the water.  As opposed to the image taken prior to this where the long shutter speed served to calm the water, I chose to keep the subtle ripples here to add texture to the scene. If you made it through this series (and you can see all five images in a row by [...]

Chasing the Light 4 – Perfect Sunset from Parker Lane

As I drove from Cove Lane to the next stop, Parker Lane, I was part giddy and part worried.  I saw the sky take on incredible hues of color and worried that I would miss the peak of this light. I got to Parker Lane, jumped out of the car and quickly set up.  I knew that I wanted to shoot this scene from the top of the stairs but there happened to be someone there at the moment so I ventured down to the waters edge. That composition wasn't working for me so I returned to the now empty [...]

Chasing the Light 3 – Lone Sailboat in the Harbor

The sun had set and the light kept getting better as I stood on Cove Lane (check out Monday and Tuesday's posts if you have missed any part of this Chasing the Light series).  As I watched the light, I decided to change lenses and try to isolate a lone sailboat in the harbor with this great light reflecting off the water. This time, I opened the aperture as far as it went (f/4) so that the sailboat would be in sharp focus with softer focus on the foreground and background.  This helped further isolate the boat.  I also made [...]

Chasing the Light 2 – Sunburst from Cove Lane

So after leaving Castle Rock a bit disappointed in missing the best light, I drove further up the Neck, around Chandler Hovey and parked near Cove Lane.  I took advantage of the public way and walked down to the beach to see if the sunset might hold some promise.  I found this scene before me and a smile crept onto my face...maybe this would make up for having struck out a bit at Castle Rock. I set about choosing my composition and made sure all the elements were where I wanted them. I then closed down the aperture to f/22 [...]

Chasing the Light 1 – Subtle Light at Castle Rock

As I'm always out shooting alone, I realize that my viewers don't have a sense for how a photo shoot might transpire.  I thought I would address that this week with a 'chasing the light' series.  All photos to be posted this week were taken on Sunday, July 8th and culminated in a great sunset that I shared a few weeks ago - CLICK HERE to see it. The night began with a drive out to the Neck when I saw the color in these clouds overhead.  I was hoping to capture the light reflecting in the ocean water below [...]

Slow Start to Race Week

I was hoping to catch a few sailboats racing by the lighthouse today but, as I drove across the causeway, I noted a thick fog had settled in the harbor.  I took a few photos of the fog as I made my way up to Chandler Hovey Park and, when I arrived, noticed that the boats were all waiting. Waiting for the wind, the fog to clear....just waiting. I took this image in the midst of some particularly dense fog.  The only way to tell it's in color is by the red on the nearby sail.  I actually liked the [...]

Keep it Local – Boston Ballet

I thought I had run out of 'Keep it Local' images but happened upon this one taken in November of last year.  Just as in yesterday's image of sunset over Leggs Hill, I again had my camera gear with me without any real intention of shooting.  I had gone to the Y to play squash and, on leaving turned and noted dancers at the beam overhead.  I quickly grabbed the camera and had time for this one image before the dancers moved off. I was struck by the contrast of these dancers against the facade of the building.  Black and [...]
