Sunset over Leggs Hill

I've been meaning to post this image for a while now but it kept falling deeper into the archives for some reason.  Back in early December, I remember coming home from work at 4:30pm and, for some reason, I had thought to bring my camera that morning.  The light was interesting as drove toward Marblehead and, as soon as I drove across Lafayette, I saw this scene unfold before me.  The light was perfect, the tide just right and the calm water gave off a brilliant reflection. I quickly pulled over, set the hazards, and ran back down toward the [...]

Lobster Traps and the American Flag

On a late June morning and after shooting the sun rise over the harbor, I made my way to the landing to check for any good photo opportunities.  As I mad my way down the ramp to one of the floating docks, I noticed the sun was about to rise immediately behind the American flag.  I quickly set about composing this shot and liked the balance of the lobster traps in the foreground with the lighthouse and boats in the harbor serving as backdrop.  The sky still held some good color and the flag did a great job of keeping [...]

Long Exposure – More Waterfalls in Marblehead

Time to return to Castle Rock for yet another temporary waterfall.  If you missed the earlier waterfall shots, click here.  This and the rest of the images of crashing waves were taken in mid June during a particularly high tide and with surprisingly large waves that came to shore.  I made my way to a ledge under the main outcropping at Castle Rock and used my longest lens to zoom in on the waves as they washed over rocks.  By slowing the shutter speed, I was able to capture these temporary waterfalls.  Black and white helps isolate texture in the [...]

Blue Dawn on Devereux Beach

I have to admit that it took me a minute to remember where I took this image when I looked through the archives for today's post.  This was taken in early May during the blue hour that precedes the dawn.  With the incredibly low tide and some leftover moisture on the sand, Devereux beach took on a great mirrored appearance.  If it wasn't for the familiar lamp posts on the causeway, I probably would have been scratching my head for a while longer trying to remember where I was when I took this.  Hope you enjoy this calm morning view [...]

Rainbow at the End of the Causeway

I started the week with an image of a rainbow and decided it fitting to finish in the same manner.  This rainbow has appeared here before when I chased it to Chandler Hovey park.  Early on, I had shot another (smaller) rainbow off the ocean before turning and seeing this one at the end of the causeway.  I couldn't help but try a few shots to compose the rainbow with the lampposts on the causeway.  This was one of my favorites from the earlier part of the night.

Lighthouse Reflections at Sunset

If yesterday's post was the 'rule breaker', this one is toeing the line when it comes to composition.  You'll note the lighthouse in the left third of the frame, the leading lines formed by the grass bringing the viewer's eye to the base of the lighthouse and then extending up in the form of the clouds over the water. So, which do you prefer - the 'rule breaker' or 'rule follower'?

Marblehead Light at Sunset

This image 'breaks' most of the accepted rules of photographic composition.  The center of focus should not be in the middle of the frame, the horizon should not be a the center either.  The important part of knowing the rules though is understanding when they can and should be broken.  In this case there are added elements to take away from the centering of the lighthouse - such as the tree to the left.  And the diagonal formed by the pink clouds is accentuated by other diagonals in the reflecting pool of water, ocean, and the lighthouse itself.  Hope you [...]

Long Exposure – Scattered Rocks at Preston Beach

Two and a half minutes - that's how long this image took to produce.  I had set out at the end of May to photograph Preston beach at sunset.  The clouds and sunset didn't offer much so I decided to simplify the scene by composing it for a long exposure black and white image.  The rocks in the foreground balance out the houses beyond.  The long exposure turned the ocean into a mirror to reflect the light in the sky.

Rainbows over Devereux Beach

I'm fairly certain that I did not have a single rainbow image in the first three summers of living in Marblehead.  All of a sudden, I find myself with so many I have to include two in this one post!  Back in early June, a storm came through in the evening as I was getting home from work.  I had enough time to grab the camera bag and race down to Devereux beach.  When I got there, I saw this vibrant rainbow and sought a good composition to include some landmarks.  I settled on the shelter (though wish the trash [...]

Devereux Beach Silhouettes

July 3rd was a very productive day in hindsight.  I used the day to scout out locations for shooting the fireworks the following day.  As part of that scouting mission, I biked to the causeway and tried to figure out compositions using my longest lens.  When I finished, I turned and saw the sun was in the perfect spot to make everyone on Devereux appear as silhouettes.  I took a few photos from up there and decided this was my favorite.  The clouds and surf were great but it's the various people that make this shot for me. If you [...]
